Traffic congestion in recent years has become an inseparable element of urban transportation. Traffic congestion occurs whenever the free flow of traffic is interrupted. The magnitude of the congestion depends upon the degree of interruption. The interruption again may be created by a number of different factors. These factors may be broadly classified as roadway factors, vehicle factors and human factors. A basic defect of the road system like poor geometries or bad intersection may be responsible for creating congestion. On the other side, congestion may occur, due to a disabled, vehicle on roadway or due to driver indiscipline. Thus congestion is not the cause but the effect, it is in fact a symptom that indicates a traffic disorder. Traffic congestion is like a crack in a beam or structure reflecting the failure of the system.
