From the point of view of economy of scale equipment size is increasing day by day. The costs are also increasing at a fast pace. With the advent of such costly machineries and equipment in course of expansion of production activities, the importance of appropriate maintenance has been assuming greater significance. It is vitally important that such costly plant and machinery be not only properly maintained but the very design should be based on Tcrotechnological considerations i.e. on cost effective performance of the equipment and the system. The overall objective should be to obtain the best value for money spent on production venture at all stages. It means that productivity must be optimised within the bounds of the system. Terotechnology is actually the combination of engineering, management, financial and other practices applied to physical assets in persuit of life cycle cost. Under its fold come the specification and design for reliability and easy maintainability of plant, machinery, equipment, buildings and structure! and their installations, commissioning, modification and replacement strategies. In brief, the important point is to reduce plant and equipment down-time and component's failure-risk.
