Four aquatic macrophytes, viz., Najas graminea Del., Nymphoides cristata (Roxb.) Kuntze, Myriophyllum tuberculatum Roxb. and Utricularia stellaris L.f. were chosen for study and collected from Barik bandh of Raghunathpur in Purulia district, West Bengal. Antibacterial activity of the aqueous extracts of these four plants has been studied using two Gram (+) ve bacteria, viz., Bacillus subtilis and B. cereus and two Gram (-) ve bacteria, viz., Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Aeromonas caviae by agar well diffusion method. Among the four plant extracts, Najas graminea showed antimicrobial activity against both Gram (+) ve bacteria mentioned above and Nymphoides cristata against one Gram (-) ve bacteria (Vibrio parahaemolyticus). No antibacterial activity was exhibited by Myriophyllum tuberculatum and Utricularia stellaris. Keywords
