Small indigenous fish species (SIFS) of freshwater bodies is a rich source of protein, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Traditionally SIFS are linked to the livelihood, health and well-being of rural people. About 450 small indigenous freshwater fish species (SIFFS) are known in India, of which about 216 SIFFS are found in the north east. In the Western Ghats, the SIFFS are 196 out of 287 freshwater species and in Central India, these are 120 out of 175. Sixty two SIFFS are important for food security, while 42 are ornamental. Many SIF's species can be introduced as candidate species in freshwater aquaculture. The use of gears like mayajal, puntijal and vassal jal exerts high pressure on SIFS. Pollution, pesticide use in paddy fields, shrinkage of suitable habitats, over exploitation and other anthropogenic factors threaten many SIFFS. The Indian Fisheries Act, 1897 prohibits destructive fishing practices like poisoning and dynamite fishing. The State of Madhya Pradesh has extended the lease period to 10 years. The Tamil Nadu reservoir licensing policy allows fishers a 1:2 (fisher:government) share of larger fishes and a 1:1 share of smaller fishes. Intensive carp cultures in wetland areas to increase fish production put pressure on indigenous varieties. Need based planning for conservation and management strategies of SIFS are of utmost importance.

Water, surface or underground, fresh, brackish or marine, sustains life, serving as an important ingredient of protoplasm. In fact, water is life, river is lifeline and ocean is the womb of mother earth. It is needless to say that we need to keep water clean for everyday use for various purposes and we also need to save water for our future generation. We need to take adequate care of water in every possible ways and hence this communication to express our concern. But how we can save water for us and for our future generation!
Here we attempt to offer certain approaches that can be adopted and expressed and can create and extend awareness to prevent pollution of water, restoration of water bodies and upkeep of aquatic ecosystem health of the earth and especially of India. In this context, we not only need to take care of water pollution, but we need to take care of air, land and all life forms and life support systems those exist, linked with water as wonderful web of life. Herein we share our ideas as follows:
• To adopt ecosystem approach of management for all kind of water resources.
• To prevent industrial pollution, oil spill and also pollution of air, land and water to arrest settling of air suspended particulate matter and surface runoff of into water.
• To prevent eutrophication, bioaccumulation and biomagnifcation in aquatic ecosystem yielding hazards to human life.
• To prevent abuse of water resources and waste of tap water in domestic and municipal supply systems and also in agricultural irrigation systems.
• To document, quantify and monitor water resource systems, water quality and its health status at regular interval to understand the changes in aquatic environments.
• To promote social and environmental education amongst school children.
• To create awareness in protection, preservation and restoration of aquatic environment, refecting worship of water ingrained in the cultural tradition of India.
• To undertake environmental awareness programmes involving students in the contest on how to save water for future.
• To share approaches and ideas of saving water organizing seminar, symposia, workshop, etc., amongst the scientifc community and also at panchayat level.
• To lend hands in cleanliness of local environment and water resource systems.
• To encourage rain water harvesting and allowing scope for recharge of ground water.
• To help reduce global warming, climate change and sea level rise.

Wetland economics more precisely fish production data of a freshwater beel, viz., Bhomra beel, an oxbow lake of 99.28 water area in Nadia district of West Bengal is herein communicated. Bhomra Fishermen Cooperative Society Ltd. (BFCS), established in 1957, is the lease holder of this beel which presently provides livelihood to 313 fishermen families. Fish production data reveal that the productions of both carp and weed fish varieties (amacha) vary from year to year in this beel. In 2001-2002 table fish production was 42,485 kg in terms of quantity and Rs. 12,18,221 in terms of value along with weed fish of 7,848 kg in quantity and Rs. 2,35,494 in value, while the production of table fish in 2010-2011 was 27,300 kg in quantity and Rs. 16,97,200 in value along with weed fish of 5,226 kg in quantity and Rs. 3,13,260 in value. Ten years' average annual overall fish production was 46,733.1 kg during 1991-2000 as per earlier records and 39,926.3 kg during 2001-2010 (in the present study), indicating a decline in production. It has also been revealed that fishermen engaged in catching weed fish species get almost the entire sale proceeds from the society since they are to pay Rs. 30 per month for catching amacha. However, conflicting issues over lifting of beel water for irrigation purpose hampering harvesting of fish during summer as well as local disturbances and threats need to be mitigated for better production achievement and sustainable utilization of wetland resource base.- Wetland Economics: 2. Mud crab (Scylla serrata and S. tranquebarica) fishing in Sundarban, West Bengal is an old practice while its farming is a recent one dating back to 1990s. Herein, farming denotes fattening of crabs. Crab fattening locally called chamber chas relates to rearing of discarded adult mud crabs unft to attract export market. This recent enterprise involves rearing of discarded crabs (eggless female crabs and male water crabs) fed with trash fish, mollusks meat, etc., in brackishwater ponds (ranging from 2 to 10 cottahs, i.e., 0.01 ha to 0.06 ha, larger ones often partitioned into 3-4 ponds with bamboo-split screen and nylon net) for period of 15-20 days in different areas like Gosaba, Basanti, Minakhan, Hingalganj, Hasnabad and Sandeshkhali, nearer to mangrove forest to meet the demand of gonad developed female crabs and larger sized male meat crabs. Field surveys and observations revealed that crab farmers use to stock discarded crabs @ 20-40 (30) kg crabs per cottah (katha) of pond and supply fresh fish and mollusk feed @ 7-8 kg per 100 kg of crabs, i.e., @ 7-8 % of their body weight. It has also been revealed that a crab farmer earns Rs. 1,200-2,000 per month per cottah (katha), using his own brackishwater pond and household man-powers.
Crab catching in the Sundarban though remains in its traditional form even today still the existing wild estuarine stock is increasingly exploited/over-exploited. There is also increasing demand of live crabs in the export market and hence the need for farming. However, it is necessary to standardize the crab fattening technique using simple scientific methods of water quality monitoring in addition to size and sex-wise segregating of crabs, reducing mortality rate and escape of crabs, and also need for pond management and provision of cost effective feed supplement to augment the production potentials and to reduce the dependency on mangrove forest.

Etymologically, Haora and Hugli districts of West Bengal owe their names from waterbodies, i.e., Haora from haor, meaning wetland in Bengali and Hugli from the river Hooghly. These two districts, being located in the mature deltaic region of Ganga delta plain, are rich in waterways and wetland resources. Important rivers of these two adjacent districts are Hooghly, Damodar, Rupnarayan, Saraswati, Ghia, Kausiki, etc. Major wetlands of these districts include Dunkuni marsh, Rajapur jala, Amta jala, Khanan jala, Khanakul jala, Kumirmora beel, Sultanpur beel, etc. In all, Haora district has non-impounded waters like rivers, canals and beel/ baors of 3,145.46 ha and impounded water of 5,554.66 ha, while Hugli district has 11,958.44 ha and 16,268.01 ha of non-impounded and impounded waters respectively. Field observations have revealed that these two districts enjoy appreciable importance with respect to production of various items of freshwater fisheries in West Bengal which include freshwater fishes, prawns, shrimps, crabs, snails and mussels. Major carps and exotic carps are cultivated in ponds and jheels, while weed fishes, crustaceans and mollusks are naturally grown in various types of wetlands including paddy fields.
These two districts also enjoy production of commercially important aquatic and amphibious plant species, such as, hogla, helenchasak, kalmisak, susnisak, thankunisak, padma, paniphal, patighas, madurkathi, shaluk, shola, kulekhara, kushghas, jundarighas, etc. Some of these plant species are cultivated in marshy areas and roadside or railway jheels to earn a living from their production and sale in West Bengal and adjoining states. These cultivated plant species are mainly grown in Haora district, viz., hogla (Typha) in and around Kulgachia-Birshibpur areas, padma (Nelumbo) in Kulgachia, Kantapukur and Deulti areas, patighas in Balarampur-Birshibpur areas, madurkathi in Garhbhabanipur-Amata areas, while paniphal (Trapa) chas and madurkathi (Cyperus) chas are well known in railway jheels of Kamarkundu and Munsirhat areas respectively of Hugli district. Since there is rampant reclamation and horizontal shrinkage of marshes, swamps, beels and jheels it is high time to protect these wetlands and save the livelihood of local farmers, fisherfolk and rural populace depending on these aquaresources in this part of West Bengal.

West Bengal is rich with natural and man-made wetlands, both freshwater and brackish water. Total wetland area of the state has been estimated at 10.49 lakh ha (freshwater area: 5.89 lakh ha, estuarine area: 2.5 lakh ha and brackish water area: 2.1 lakh ha), excluding paddy fields. Amongst these ecological types, freshwater wetlands, such as, pond, pool, beel, baor, haur, jala, doba, daha, dighi, sagar, sayer, etc., are distributed widely all over West Bengal. And amongst these freshwater wetlands, womenfolk are especially concerned with smaller water bodies, shallow marshes and lowland depressions like dobas, jheels, jalas, paddy fields and roadside nullahs those offer suitable sites for fishing small indigenous fishes and shrimps, and also for collecting edible freshwater snails, mussels and crabs. Rural women regularly depend on these wetlands for collecting edible plant food materials for domestic consumption as well as ethnomedicinal plants for cure of various ailments. The collection of aquatic animal resources, viz., weed fishes, crustaceans and molluscs, and edible and commercially important plant species naturally grown in West Bengal wetlands are enlisted, indicating their usage and importance. It has further been noticed that the role of rural womenfolk in fishing and collecting aquatic resources are intimate, deep ischolar_mained and deeply dependent. The relationships of rural womenfolk with wetlands are highlighted in this communication along with necessity for awareness generation to protect these wetlands from natural shrinkage, growing reclamation and pesticide pollution.- Usages of Water Resources in the Forests

Water is indispensible for sustenance of life and maintenance of ecosystem including forest ecosystem. Water resources in the forests comprise of rivers, streams, bogs, natural or artificial ponds and pot holes. These water resources provide drinking water to the wildlife and serve the purpose of bathing and wallowing of the wild beasts. All forest animals come to the water resources at least once either in day or in night and invariably leave their footmarks on the banks. From these footmarks both species diversity and population in a particular forest area are usually counted that can serve an important role in framing, formulating and implementing forest management measures. It is a common practice to build small check dams on the tiny forest streams for providing drinking water to the wild animals in the dry season. Not only that, these rivers and streams are good medium for dispersal of seed as well as spawning ground for many indigenous fish and other aquatic species. These water resources are also used by the villagers living in and around the forest to fulfil their daily domestic requirement of water. Usually the majority of Indian populace use the holy water of rivers to perform their rites and rituals. The villagers living in or near the forest also use these water sources for the same purpose. The fast flowing rivers of hill forests are also used for transporting logs from higher to lower elevations. As a part of Calcutta University curriculum, a local excursion was made by us on September 13, 2014 at Brace Bridge Nature Park (BBNP), a 60 ha sewage fed fi shery system in Kolkata, under the guidance of our teachers and, accompanied and supervised by experts on the subject. The excursion was an exciting exercise to have the glimpse of nature and wildlife at the park. The jheels of this fi shery system have long been used city sewage water for puri fi cation and pisciculture. The entire area is brought under beautification and greenery with gardens, tall trees and some cages and enclosures of deer, pet animals and birds for visitors.References

On 5 th April, 2015, we visited Diara marshlands under Uttar Rajyadharpur mouza, Piarapur Gram Panchayat, Hooghly district, West Bengal. A broken brick and rubbish top semi-kachcha road, locally known as Jangal Road, from Diara Railway Station to Delhi High Road, a distance of about two kilometers was travelled. Along side it was found that the sewerage laden Jangal nullah which serves the need for irrigation in the area, which was teeming with agricultural activities, growing rice-paddies and a wide variety of vegetables, dominated by bhindi (okra / lady's finger) production varying from 2-5 kg/ katha / week during peak growing period.- Wetland Economics : 1. Wetland economics and especially fish production data of a freshwater beel, viz., Bhomra beel in Nadia district of West Bengal is communicated. Fish production data reveal that the productions of both carp and weed fish varieties (amacha) vary from year to year. In 2001-2002 table fish production was 42,485 kg in terms of quantity and ₹ 12,18,221/- in terms of value along with weed fish of 7,848 kg in quantity and ₹ 2,35,494/- in value, while in 2010-2011, table fish production was 27,300 kg in quantity and ₹ 16,97,200/- in value along with weed fish of 5,226 kg in quantity and ₹ 3,13,260/- in value. Ten years' average annual overall fish production was 46,733.1 kg during 1991-2000 as per earlier records and 39,926.3 kg during 2001-2010 (in the present study), indicating a decline in production. It has also been revealed that fishermen engaged in catching weed fish species get almost the entire sale proceeds from the society since they are to pay ₹ 30/- per month for catching amacha.Keywords

The eastern fringe of Kolkata, recently getting developed as a new township and destination of affluent class families serving mainly in global fields, possesses acres and acres of wetlands. Some of these wetlands are still untouched by the influence of concrete jungle, and, therefore, still remain as a good destination of bird watchers (Fig. 1), because this area is the perfect habitat of beautiful wetland and grassland birds like Water-cock, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Asian Openbill Stork, Little Grebe, Black-breasted weaver, Red Munia, Tricoloured Munia, Scaly breasted Munia, Striated Grassbird, Bristled Grassbird, Bengal Bushlark, Zitting cisticola , Pipit, Prinia and many more. Habitat preference for breeding and foraging of most of these water birds in these marshy wetlands is due to free floating water-chest-nut mat (Fig. 2). The present paper deals with extent, distribution and threats to wetlands as well as their biodiversity conservation and management scenario in India. The state-wise distribution of wetlands reflects highest area of natural wetlands in Gujarat and manmade wetlands in Karnataka. Madhya Pradesh has the highest area of reservoirs (0.29 million ha), while the freshwater tanks and ponds is represented highest in Tamil Nadu (0.69 million ha) and that of floodplain lakes in Assam (0.1 million ha). Major threats to major categories of freshwater and brackishwater wetlands in India include encroachment, reclamation, habitat destruction, siltation, timber cutting, overexploitation, weed infestation, eutrophication, pollution and poaching of wildlife, etc. The major initiatives, activities, strategies and management needs towards conservation and management of wetlands in India have been depicted and discussed. An integrated area development approach to wetland conservation and management at the Block Development level in rural areas and at the municipal level in urban areas is suggested. A model of multipurpose concept of wise use of wetlands under the umbrella of an Integrated Area Development Network Programme (IADNP) is shown towards conservation and sustainable development representing urban wetlands in Kolkata.Keywords

Coastal West Bengal comprising of three districts, namely, North 24-Parganas, South 24-Parganas and East Midnapore is dominated by mangroves, estuaries, backwaters and brackishwater bheries. All these ecosystems are very rich in fauna including the crustaceans, many of which are of commercial value. In the present communication, an inventory of a total of 34 species of commercially important prawns and crabs has been prepared along with a list of 13 species of ill-tapped/untapped crustaceans. Data for marine shrimp (both penaeid and non- penaeid) and crab production and their export from the state have been presented. The major threats to crustacean fishery of the State of West Bengal have also been discussed along with the conservation issues.Keywords

Ichhamati river and its branches form one of the largest oxbow lake complex at Bangaon region of North 24-Parganas district. West Bengal. Among this lake complex, six lakes were seasonally surveyed during 1996-97 and 1997-98 and other four were explored during 1990-91. These oxbows had relatively rich faunal diversity including a variety of water birds. About s'txly species of fishes, seven species of amphibians, nine species of reptiies and various taxonomic categories of lower life-forms like insects (46 species), crustaceans (10 species), annelids (6 species), molluscs (23 species), and zooplankton (48 species) were recorded from oxbow waters. Besides agricultural and anthropogenic stresses, weed infestation particulariy with water hyacinth. Eichhoniia crassipes is a major concern devouring surface of lake waters. The results of environmental studies on water characteristics, lake flora and fauna, piscicultural activities as well as management practices and problems associated with these riverine wetlands of West Bengal have been discussed.Keywords

In the present paper, a case study of cooperative as well as fisheries management practices of Charchariya fishery is presented along with a profile of the fishery system. The Charchariya Fishermen Cooperative Society (CFCS) assures year-round employment to all its 146 members, while this sewage-fed fishery management system supports multiple benefits to the local people through low cost and near natural purification of sewage waste water. In general, this fishery system appears to be one of the highly productive piscicultural ecosystems in West Bengal.Keywords

While conducting fishery resource surveys and efficiency studies on estuarine fishing gears of West Bengal during 2002-03 and 2003-04, an attempt was made to inventorise indigenous fishing gears of Hooghly-Matia estuarine ecosystems of West Bengal. This forms the basis of the present communication. In 1906, Sir K. G. Gupta (1908) undertook investigations on the fisheries of the province of Bengal. Since then, several workers have studied the fish and fisheries resources of Hooghly-Matla estuaries (Hora, 1949; Pillay and Ghosh, 1962; Saha, 1970; Mitra et al, 1997; Pramanik and Nandi, 2004). Zooplankton diversity of two frestiwater and two brackisliwater wetlands of Goa hiave beeen investigated during 2001-02 and 2002-03. A total of 42 species of zooplankton have been recorded, of which 41 species arc from freshwater wetlands, 29 species from brackish wetlands/ fisheries and 28 species common to both categories. This shows higher diversity of zooplankton in freshwater wetlands than in the brackishwater wetlands in Goa. The population density of different zooplankton groups as measured in terms of number of organisms per 50 litres of water have revealed higher population densities in freshwater wetlands (165-342 / 50 L) in comparison to that in brackishwater wetlands (86-181 / 50 L). In general, premonsoon population is higher than postmonsoon population in freshwater wetlands, while postmonsoon population is higher than premonsoon population in brackishwater wetlands.Keywords

Polychaete species as well as their population density and month-wise variations in population has been studied at the Tolly's Nullah sewage outfall region, Koikata. Three {Namalycastis faiiveli, Dendronereis aeslurina and Nephtys oligobranchia) out of six species recorded were found to be dominant at the outfall area. In general, polychaete occurs in higher abundance (as high as 192 no./ m2) during premonsoon (February to April) period. They are found to prefer sandy and weedy substratum.Keywords

A checklist of ophidian fauna (snakes) comprising of 112 species belonging lo 9 families from West Bengal, India is presented along with their Bengali names, status, distribution and conservation needs. Of these, 46 species are considered herein to be rare, 2 species as threatened and 1 species as endangered in West Bengal. The Hill and Dooars region represents the highest number of 79 species of ophidian fauna from West Bengal. A considerable number of ophidian species exclusively inhabit the coastal waters and the Himalayan foothills. Some suggestions towards conservation and management have been given and inclusion of King Cobra under Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife Protection Act has been recommended.Keywords

Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary (15°30'N and 73°50'E) is located at the western tip of Chorao Island along the Mandovi River near Panaji in North Goa district of Goa State. It is a protected patch of estuarine mangrove habitat established as Red Shank Sanctuary and the smallest sanctuary of Goa notified in 1988 with an area of just 1.78 sq km. It is an important mangrove habitat harbouring both estuarine and mangrove crabs. Four field surveys were conducted in this area in connection with plankton and benthos fauna of the state. In the present report only brachyuran crabs recorded from this sanctuai-y areas are communicated. It includes 9 species of crabs belonging to 4 families under 8 genera, viz., Scylla serrata (Forskal) (Family : Portunidae); Eurycarcinus orientalis A. M. Edwards (Family ; Pilumnidae); Gnipsus albolineatiis Lamarck, Varuna littercita (FabriciusJ, Chironiantes bidens (de Haan), Pamsesanna plicatinn (Latreille), Episesanna taeniolata (White) (Family : Grapsidae); Uca lactea (de Haan) and Uca dussumieri (H. M. Edwards) (Family : Ocypodidae). During the course of field investigation in 1990s, six dry Hsh centres of Sundarban coast, viz.. Jambudwip, Kalisthan, Sagar, Bakkhali, Fraserganj and Mousuni were visited over the years in winter 2-3 times in a year. Post harvest dry fish production techniques dealing with sorting, dissecting and drying of fishes, which are followed by the fisherfolk of this coast, were observed and described in this paper. This fisherfolk of this coast still depend on primitive and indigenous technology for drying fishes on the sun in the open courtyard. Reasons for persisting of primitive methods have also been discussed.Keywords

Three important wetlands of Puruliya district. West Bengal, viz., Indrabil near Indrabil Station, Saheb bundh of Puruliya town and Adra reservoir of Adra town have been selected and surveyed for ecological and hydrobiological study. These are freshwater wetlands and serve as important waterfowl habitats. The present paper deals with physiographical features, vegetation profile, limnological conditions, faunal resources (177 species under 67 families) and ecosystem services of these wetlands. The ecosystem goods and services offered by these three wetlands are enumerated. Based on the bioindicator species that are pollution sensitive, pollution tolerant, pollution resistant, an average BMW? (Bio Monitoring Working Party) score has been determined for these three wetlands. In overall, these three wetlands are in moderate state of pollution and among them Indrabil is comparatively clean or less polluted.Keywords

Crustaceans are primarily aquatic organisms. They are mostly marine but there are many freshwater species inhabiting ponds, lakes, streams and rivers and occupy a basic position in aquatic food chain. In the present paper, crustacean communities of four selected wetlands of West Bengal, namely, Rabindra Sarovar, Nalban, Brace Bridge Nature Park and Mirik Lake have been studied. All these four water bodies are freshwater wetlands. Among these, Nalban and Brace Bridge Nature Park are sewage fed wetlands. Crustacean community of these wetlands is comprised of Cladocera, Copepoda, Ostracoda, Conchostraca, Amphipoda, Isopoda and Decapoda. The list includes 36 species of zooplankton and macrozoobenthos. The study reveals highest representation of crustacean diversity in Rabindra Sarovar Data obtained on water quality as well as general ecological parameters suggest that highest crustacean diversity is associated with habitat ecology, niche diversity, naturalness and ecosystem health of the wetlands.Keywords

Diversity of brachyuran crabs of coastal ecosystems of Tamil Nadu is documented and critically analysed. The crabs reported so far from these ecosystems comprise of 344 species belonging to 154 genera under 23 families. Highest diversity of species has been observed at Gulf of Mannar (195 species) followed by Chennai coast (169 species), Palk Bay (98 species) and Parangipettai coast (84 species), while highest diversity of species has been encountered in the family Xanthidae (56 species) followed by Portunidae (53 species), Leucosidae (41 species), Majidae (36 species), Grapsidae (32 species) and Ocypodidae (19 species). Zoogeographical distribution of these species has been discussed along with endemicity. Amongst these crabs, 254 species are widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific region, 57 species are confined to the Indian Ocean and 25 species to Bay of Bengal. Habitat-wise distribution of 140 species of crabs has revealed the occurrence of 61 species in coral reef, followed by 40 species in mangroves, 23 species in backwater and 13 species in sandy habitats of this state. List of new taxa described so far from the state has also been given.Keywords

Nayachar is a newly emerged island of East Medinipur district. West Bengal, measuring about 17 km in length and 6 km in width. It is located near the mouth of Hooghly river and approachable by river route through Haldia of East Medinipur district and Nischintapur of South 24-Parganas district. After the formation of this island about 60 years ago, grasses started growing on the mudflat and gave shape to this island. But before the beginning of human settlement, neighbouring people from Kadwip, Kulpi, Pathar Pratima, Mathurapur, and Namkhana Police Stations, used to utilize the grassland of Nayachar, known to them as Agunmarir Char, as grazing field for cattle and buffaloes during post cultivation lean period from October to March, even up to June, since 1950s. At that time the bovine animals were taken to the island from Poila No. Ghat, using country boat, with cattle in the hold of the boat, and 4-5 buffaloes tied to the boat, while the remainings were driven to the river to swim across following them. The same practice is followed even today, vising 2-cylinder mechanized boat (bhutbhiiti), instead of country boat.- Wetland Economics. 3. Cost benefit analysis of water chestnut cultivation in West Bengal is communicated herein with two case studies. Field observations made in Railway jheels of southern West Bengal including Rajarhat areas in Kolkata have revealed that water chestnut, locally called paniphal, is grown of three husk colour, viz., green, red and purple with predominance of green variety in this part of the country. Production process begins actively in June after the lease agreement is made either verbally by the private parties or through tender system by the railway authorities and continues up to the first week of December when harvesting is over. Observations on cultivation, harvesting and marketing as well as case studies suggest it a labour intensive enterprise which requires manure (DAP) for growth of the plant and medicine (pesticide) for pest infestation. Cost benefit analysis for the year 2014, suggests that paniphal farmers earned a meagre amount of ` 1,000- ` 3,000/- (av. ` 2,000/-) per bigha excluding remuneration of the farmer and his household labour during the entire period of cultivation of about six months. Because of its commercial importance, community dependency and livelihood dependency of labourers as well as environmental benefits like nutrient removal and water purification, an integration of paniphal cultivation with pisciculture and integrated wetland management at the Block Level is suggested.Keywords

Rice fields are specialized temporary man-made wetlands, often used in paddy-cum-fish culture, especially in low-lying lands of North and South 24-Parganas districts in West Bengal. In the course of field surveys on wetland economics and livelihood dependency on wetland biodiversity during monsoon season in 2015, it was found that local marginal farmers of Fisherypara village under Jeevantala Gram Panchayat of Canning Block II, South 24-Parganas district, West Bengal were found largely engaged in gathering Brahmi shak, Bacopa monnieri (L) from rice fields due to scarcity of rain that season.- Wetland Watch. 4. The non-timber forest products (NTFP) in India have gained enormous attention to the forest ecologists and environmentalists due to their importance in rural livelihood enhancement, biodiversity conservation and sustainable forest management. The present case study thus aims to document detail information of various forest-based resources in the Garhbeta forest of West Medinipur district in West Bengal. These resources include medicinal plants, mushrooms, wild honey, kendu-patta (leaves of Diospyrous melanoxylon tree, useful in preparing Indian beedi), fruits, barks, ischolar_mains and herbs for the chemical and herbal production, and diverse usages of sal tree (Shorea robusta) in sal leave plate and bowl production, resin, oil-cake, lamp oil, and vegetable cooking oil preparation. The dry leaves of sal tree, kendu tree and eucalyptus trees are also used as traditional cooking fuel for domestic usages throughout the year by almost all the local communities neatly stacking in the shade close to their household for future use. To this end, various NTFP resources, the provincial resource availability, cost-benefit analysis, and seasonal NTFP harvesting patterns will be analysed as an attempt to promote optimal resource management and participatory conservation of wild medicinal/herbal plants towards community economic development in the study region. In addition, discussions will be made to encourage alternative earning options in the tribal community by introducing regional forest-based handicrafts and sustainable animal husbandry in the wide but uninterrupted sal coppice forest of Garhbeta region.- Honey Harvesting in the Indian Sundarban Mangrove Forest

Sundarban mangrove forest is famous for wild honey production. Honey collectors of Indian Sundarban resort to harvesting of honey for four months from April to July, though official permits are issued usually for the months of April and May. During the course of survey since 2010 one of us (SKP) observed that honey harvesters of Sundarban are poor people living in the fringe areas of Sundarban mangrove forests, mainly belonging to Gosaba, Basanti, Kultali, Sandeshkhali, Hingalgunj and Hasnabad Development Blocks of South and North 24 Parganas districts, West Bengal. Mulkarkha Lake is located at the Himalayan foothills under Kalimpong Forest Range, Darjeeling district of West Bengal, few kilometer from Rhenock, Sikkim. This natural lake is surrounded by remote villages amidst dense forest consisting of trees like Himalayan pine, Himalayan fir, Japanese red-cedar, teak and others which are mostly common in rain forests. The forest is the home to a diverse kinds of birds, such as, yellow billed blue magpie, green magpie, rufous-winged fulvetta, green-tailed sunbird, blue whistling thrush, striated laughing thrush, white-throated laughing thrush, grey bushchat, verditer flycatcher, common rosefinch, scimitar-babbler and others. Mammals like Himalayan black bear, leopard and barking deer are also reported by the villagers. The lake and surrounding forest are protected by local people as it remains a part of native religious belief. The water body is dominated by ornamental fishes like gold fish, koi and other carps which are popular among aquarists. Fishing or hunting is not allowed in the lake. According to the local people the lake serves as indirect water source but direct use of water is strictly prohibited. Dry leaves and fallen parts of the forest trees also serve as primary as well as secondary energy sources to meet the need of daily life of the villagers. However, forest floor is the major source of decomposed leaves which are used as manure in cardamom cultivation that constitutes the major source of livelihood besides tourism among the locals. The use of leaves as manure and economics of cardamom cultivation by the villagers in the hill slopes adjacent to their respective residences is highlighted in this paper.- Modelling Tree Diameter Distributions in Forests:A Case Study from Garhbeta (West Bengal) Sal Coppice Forest

In forestry, statistical modelling has long been an effective tool in quantitative assessment of tree sizes using various probability distributions on tree diameters at breast height (dbh). It is however still unclear that which family of probability distributions, viz., symmetric, skewed, or heavy-tailed models are more flexible to this end, especially in forests within a small area like Garhbeta sal (Shorea robusta) coppice forest of West Medinipur district, West Bengal. Here we provide a comprehensive analysis of several descriptive and inferential statistics to identify the best-fit probability distribution in tree diameter estimation. Our sample data set comprises tree diameters (22-44 cm) of 80 randomly selected sal trees, aged between 40-50 years. Twelve candidate probability distributions, namely, exponential, exponentiated exponential, Frechet (inverse Weibull), gamma, Gaussian, inverse Gaussian, Levy, lognormal, Maxwell, Pareto, Rayleigh and Weibullare were used in this study. The Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) method is applied for the parameter estimation, whereas the Fisher Information Matrix (FIM) based surrogate approach is used for uncertainty analysis. We determine the best-fit distribution(s) from two goodness-of-fit tests: Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) minimum distance criterion. Results reveal that (i) the exponentiated exponential distribution provides the best fit, (ii) the Frechet, gamma, Gaussian, inverse Gaussian, lognormal and Weibull distributions provide the intermediate fit and (iii) the rest, namely exponential, Levy, Maxwell, Pareto and Rayleigh distributions fit poorly to the observed tree diameters in the study area. Finally, we discuss some theoretical issues related to the selection of appropriate models. Kadamane village forests (Figs. 1-4) and estate areas are located at a distance of 240 km from Bangalore city and only at 28 km away Sakleshpur town of Hasan district on the southern side of Karnataka State. It is important that these areas are under Western Ghats which were selected as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites to conserve this unique biodiversity hot spot in India. There are plenty of agri-plantaions like coffee, cardamom, paddy, orange, tea, etc. The place provides a number of home stays, resorts, etc., for visitors. To reach there from Sakleshpur town proceed towards Hanbal town which is about 14 km, and then towards Agani and from there the tarmac ends and natural terrain begins. Deep in the jungle several tiled-roof cottages are scattered over a green grassy terrain acres of land to attract the tourists. Tusk & Dawn, a jungle resort, is one of them, which has also a variety of pet animals. The area offers to hear loud scream of peacocks and thier eye-catching sight in the residential roof tops and surrounding earthen roadways (Fig. 2). Mulkarkha lake (Figs. 1-3), a natural lake situated at an altitude of 7300ft., is one of the few mountain lakes in West Bengal. It is located near a village also named as Mulkarkha close to the north east part of Bengal-Sikkim border in Kalimpong range, Darjeeling district, West Bengal. The lake is connected by a semi concrete road coming from south Sikkim, although villagers use a common trek route which is also popular among tourists. It starts from Lingsey through Jhusing, Tagathan and ultimately leads to Mulkarkha. The trek route to Mulkarkha lake is one of the most exciting trails of the Himalayan foothills. The lake is considered as sacred by the locals as they call it as ‘Wishing Lake’ or ‘Manokamana lake’. The most fascinating feature of this lake is the reflection of Mt. Kanchenjungha on its tranquil waters. Both locals and tourists are known to tie clean and colourful cloth pieces as a sign of their wishes towards this lake. The water body is surrounded by dense forest which consists of trees (Fig. 3.) like Himalayan pine, Himalayan fir, Japanese red-cedar, teak and others which are most common in rain forests. There are a number of worth seeing places like 200 feet waterfalls, enchanting views of Mt. Abbey Falls (Figs. 1-2) is one of the most popular tourist spots in Coorg of the Konkan region. It is located at 500 m from Abbeyfalls Road parking area and only at 7 km away from Madikeri mini town of Kodagu district, known to all as Coorg of Karnataka State. About 100 concrete steps to climb down the rain forest plants, coffee bushes, creepers and pepper vines to have a beautiful view of the Kaveri river falling from a height of 21 m from sea level. The hills around are age-old wilderness and the waterfall offers superb vista of wonderful amazement. Kaikondrahalli Lake, located at Sarjapur Main Road, Bengaluru megacity, is now fenced, restored and rejuvenated into a ‘nature park’ of urban Bengaluru. It spreads over an area of 48 acres with around 2 km stretch encircling the lake perimeters. Presently the lake with its island offers an important habitat for resident and migratory birds of about 70 species. Kokkarebellur is a well known community reserve of Madur taluk, while Ranganathittu is a famous bird sanctuary near Srirangapatna town. Both are in Mandya district of Kanataka State. They are well known to offer suitable habitats for both Painted Stork (Ibis leucocephalus) and Spotbilled Pelican (Pelecanus philippinensis) along with other water birds and animals. Both these two sites are so far serving as nesting sites for resident and migratory birds, especially Painted Storks and Spotbilled Pelicans, due to tall tamarind trees, tanks, rivers and extensive agricultural fields in and around. These two species are classified as “near threatened category’ according to IUCN Red List of 2009. This village so far served as one of 21 breeding sites located in India (Kokkarebellur, 2009. Biodiversity commonly comprises countless plants and animals. They provide essential components that feed and heal people, while varieties of crop plants, aquatic species as well as livestock nourishes humans and wildlife. Conserving and using biodiversity sustainably is the primary concern to people in developing countries. In India, folklore plays an important role in the life and culture of people. It is a rich treasure of human experiences, provides us clues about how the ancient people of India maintained the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems governed by the folkloric traditions. And, eventually, it has been found that such traditions ensured food security since ancient times. Herein, in Indian context, the role of folklores relating to plants, animals and fishes and their impact on the conservation of resources are briefly overviewed and discussed.Keywords

Limnology, biodiversity and management issues of a high altitude mountain-located Mirik Lake have revealed higher chloride content (13.7-22.0 mg/l), lower biodiversity (83 animal species) and multifarious management issues. But this lake has higher dissolved oxygen content (4.3-12.6 mg/l), considerable fish diversity (29 species) and immense ecosystem services, while its economic utility and community dependence indicate adequate scope for beautification and management actions.Keywords

Crab fattening, locally known as Chamber chas, is the rearing of discarded adult mud crabs (Scylla serrata, S. tranquebarica), considered unfit in arats for export, in small brackishwater bodies (ca. 0.01 ha) for a short period of 15-20 days to meet the increasing demand of gonad-developed and meat-crabs for domestic and export markets. It is a new enterprise of late 1990s, recently gaining ground in Indian part of Sundarban. It is profitable because of fast turnover, low operating cost (due to use of domestic labour in most cases), high survival rate (90%) and good demand for the end products. Chamber chas is encountered at several Development Blocks of Indian Sundarban, viz., Gosaba, Basanti, Canning I, Canning II, Sandeshkhali I and Sandeshkhali II, etc.. Both Hindus and Muslims are engaged in chamber chas, even taking on lease of local ponds. Details of two crab fattening case studies have been published in a local Bengali Magazine “Sundarban Alekhya” (August 2011, 28th Year, 2nd Issue, pages 5-10) by the senior author to encourage about this recent enterprise.- Wetland Watch. 12. Beside Bishop University, Sherbrooke in Canada, a wetland known as Peter Curry Marsh, is located near the Saint Francois River. This marsh was developed by Societe de transport de Sherbrooke (STS), while Bishop’s University in 1989 approached Ducks Unlimited Canada to establish a wetland conservation project on University ground with donation received from Mr. Peter D. Curry, a former student and longtime Ducks Unlimited Canada supporter, and perhaps so christened as Peter Curry Marsh. The project is mainly meant for breeding habitat conservation of Canada Goose (Branta canadensis), a large anatid ducks with black head and neck, white cheeks and brown body.- Wetland Watch. 13. The paper reviews host-parasite association between crab and leech. Leeches may be found on body surface of crabs (ectoparasite), such as carapace and appendages or within the branchial chambers (endoparasite). Globally, a total of 11 species of leeches are known to be associated with 17 species of crabs. Crabs serve as a substratum for the deposition of cocoons and as a means of dispersal for the leeches.Keywords

Agricultural income and activities are of prime importance in West Bengal. In Goghat Block under Arambag Sub-division, Hooghly district, West Bengal alluvial soil is helpful for growing rice and potatoes. Sesame cultivation is also increasing in recent years. Herein, cost benefit analysis of sesame cultivation is presented for 2022 (wet harvesting season) and 2023 (dry harvesting season). This report reveals loss in wet harvesting season and marginal profit in dry harvesting season for land owner concerned, and scarcity of agri-labours.Keywords
