Abstract

Albunids are relatively small crab-like anomurans, resembling the closely related Hippidae. They are generally found in shallow coastal waters but sometimes in depth as down as 225 meters. The family contains 48 species in 9 genera (Boyko&McLaughlin, 2010) world-wide, of which, only two species namely, Albunea symmysta and A. thurstoni are recorded from India. A perusal of literature reveals that not only the species but also the family Albunidae is reported herein for the first time from this state (Dev Roy, 2010).

Abstract

Although mangrove flora of Orissa are well inventorised, fauna inhabiting mangroves of this state, especially the lower invertebrates are very poorly known, barring a single publication by Chadha and Kar (1999). During the faunistic survey in March, 2011 under the project, "Mangrove Associated fauna of Orissa coast" the authors had observed and collected three species of invertebrates, namely, Pleurobranchia globosa (Phylum Ctenophora), Anelassorhynchus microrhynchus (Phylum Echiura) and Phascolosoma arcuatum (Phylum Sipuncula) from mangrove habitats of Orissa. Among these, P. globosa was observed to be very common in the fishing nets at Hukitola (River Mahanadi) and Bandar (River Devi) while A. microrhynchus and P. arcuatum were collected from Bandar (Devi River, district Jagatsingpur and Balabhadrapur in district Puri) and Jashipur (Budha Balanga River, district Balasore). P. arcuatum was found in the muddy bank in sparsely distributed mangroves. P. globosa was observed in Mahanadi estuary surrounded by dense mangroves while A. microrhynchus had been collected from dense (in Bandar) as well as sparse (in Balabhadrapur) mangroves. A perusal of literature reveals that the sipunculid P. arcuatum had been reported earlier from mangroves of Andaman Islands (Das and Dev Roy, 1989) and all the three species from Sundarbans mangrove region (Mandal and Nandi, 1989).

Abstract

Himachal Pradesh, a part of the western Himalayas lying between latitudes 30º 22´ 40´´- 33º 12´ 44´´ N and longitudes 75º 45´ 55´´- 79º 04´ 20´´ E at an altitudinal variation of 350- 7000 m is rich in faunal diversity. But, crustacean fauna, especially the brachyuran crabs are poorly known from the state. Henderson (1893) was the first to record a freshwater crab from the state, viz., Telphusa atkinsoniana [= Himalayapotamon atkinsonianum (Wood-Mason, 1871)], belonging to the family Potamidae. He reported it from Kangra and Simla. Subsequently, Doflein (1900) recorded another crab Potamon larnaudii [(= Larnaudia larnaudii (A. Milne Edwards, 1869)] from Simla, Himalayas. After a short gap, Rathbun described the crab Potamon (Potamon) koolooense [(= Himalayapotamon koolooense (Rathbun, 1904)] from Kooloo Valley.

Abstract

Members of the genus Nerocila (Isopoda: Cymothoidae) are well known ectoparasites on marine, estuarine and freshwater fishes and even on aquatic snakes. These are represented by 14 species from India. Several workers studied these parasitic isopods from Indian coasts (Schiödte and Meinert, 1881; Barnard, 1936; Chidambaram and Menon, 1945; Pillai, 1954, 1960; Bal and Joshi, 1959; Ramakrishna and Venkataramaniah, 1978; Jayadev Babu and Sanjeeva Raj, 1980; Jalajakumari et al., 1987; Bruce and Harrison-Nelson, 1988; Ghatak, 1998; Ravichandran et al., 2001; Kensley, 2001; Rajkumar et al., 2006; Rameshkumar and Ravichandran, 2010; Rameshkumar et al., 2011). A total of 22 species were recorded as hosts for these isopod parasites from the Indian region. In this communication, a new host, namely, Setipinna tenuifilis Valenciennes (Family Engraulidae) for the isopod parasite, Nerocila poruvae Rameshkumar, Ravichandran and Trilles, 2011(Figs. 1 and 2) is reported from West Bengal coast (Bakkhali and Digha) along with comprehensive parasite-host and locality records of all the 14 species hitherto known from India (Table 1). This species was described earlier from the fish Thryssa mystax at Vedaranyam coast of South India by Rameshkumar et al. (2011). As such, this is the second report of this species from India with its extended distribution further northwards up to West Bengal.

Abstract

The paper reviews host-parasite association between crab and leech. Leeches may be found on body surface of crabs (ectoparasite), such as carapace and appendages or within the branchial chambers (endoparasite). Globally, a total of 11 species of leeches are known to be associated with 17 species of crabs. Crabs serve as a substratum for the deposition of cocoons and as a means of dispersal for the leeches.
