Altogether thirty one aquatic and semi aquatic plants of ethnobotanical importance have been recorded from water bodies like lakes, ponds, canals, dams, rivers and its tributaries of Purulia district, West Bengal. These plants possess different medicinal properties and are used by the local herbal healers to cure dysentery, cough and cold, indigestion, elephantiasis, skin diseases, insect bite, leprosy, anaemia, urinary disorders, gout, impotency, etc. A number of plants are also used to treat cattle diseases and also used for preparing local wines. It is also important to note that most of the traditional uses of aquatic plants are novel and they need both popularization and preservation.Keywords

Four aquatic macrophytes, viz., Najas graminea Del., Nymphoides cristata (Roxb.) Kuntze, Myriophyllum tuberculatum Roxb. and Utricularia stellaris L.f. were chosen for study and collected from Barik bandh of Raghunathpur in Purulia district, West Bengal. Antibacterial activity of the aqueous extracts of these four plants has been studied using two Gram (+) ve bacteria, viz., Bacillus subtilis and B. cereus and two Gram (-) ve bacteria, viz., Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Aeromonas caviae by agar well diffusion method. Among the four plant extracts, Najas graminea showed antimicrobial activity against both Gram (+) ve bacteria mentioned above and Nymphoides cristata against one Gram (-) ve bacteria (Vibrio parahaemolyticus). No antibacterial activity was exhibited by Myriophyllum tuberculatum and Utricularia stellaris.Keywords

Fe (III) complex with sterically constrained phenol based tetradentate N2O2 ligand together with acetylacetone as ancillary ligand has been synthesized and characterized. Sterically constrained tetradentate ligand N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-bis(2-hydroxy-3,5-dimethylbenzyl)-ethylenediamine (H2L) has been used here to synthesize mono nuclear octahedral mixed ligand Fe(III) complex 1. Characterization of this compound is carried out by electronic spectroscopy, ESI - MS and single crystal X-ray crystallography. Compound 1 crystalizes in monoclinic space group P 21/n with a = 8.43 Å, b = 15.136 Å, c = 21.105 Å and z = 4. Antibacterial activity of complex 1 was performed by well plate technique. In the above experiment both Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli were sensitive to the mononuclear mixed ligand complex [FeIIIL(acac)] 1.Keywords

The present aero-mycological investigation was undertaken in different outdoor environments of Raghunathpur, the only subdivision of Purulia District in West Bengal. Such investigation was undertaken for the first time in this western part of West Bengal. Twenty fungal genera, viz., Aspergillus, Rhizopus, Penicillium, Mucor, Curvularia, Cercospora, Corynespora, Phaeotrichoconis, Bispora, Beltrania, Sporidesmium, Tetraploa, Alternaria, Cladosporium, Nigrospora, Fusarium, Helminthosporium, Epicoccum, Ganoderma and Periconia along with some sterile forms and ascospores were isolated from outdoor sites. The seasonal periodicities of fungal spores and variation in different extramural environment were recorded in present investigation.Keywords

Ajodhya hill located at the south boundary of Purulia district is a part of Chotanagpur Plateau and exhibits mixed dry deciduous forest. In the present work a systematic investigation of 12 parasitic and 6 epiphytic angiosperm taxa were documented from the forest as well as from the grassland and border of the rice fields situated at the foothills. Among the twelve parasites, eight are stem parasites and four are ischolar_main parasites on different hosts. A details record of their habitat, host range, nature of parasitism, flowering and fruiting time is discussed here and the voucher specimens are kept at S.K.B. University, Purulia.
The stem parasites like Dendrophthoe falcata (L.f.) Ettingsh, Viscum orientale Willd., Viscum articulatum Burm.f., Macrosolen cochinchinensis (Lour.) Teigh., etc, are detrimental to forest trees and reduce the timber value and ischolar_main parasites like Sopubia delphinifolia (L.) G. Don Striga angustifolia (D. Don) C.J. Saldana, etc, kill the soil binding grasses and thus they play an ecologically significant role in ecosystem. Some parasites and epiphytes are widely used by tribal people and their ethno-medicinal values are discussed in the present paper.
