On The Age of the Pondicherry Formation of Madras South India
Subscribe/Renew Journal
A sequence of three planktonic foraminiferal zones, the Globorotalia angulata Zone, Globorotalia velascoensis Zone and Globorotalia aequa Zone, is recognised in the Pondicherry Formation of South India. The G. angulata Zone includes the lower marlstone, the G. velascoensis Zone includes the algal limestone and the G. aequa Zone corresponds to the discocyclinid limestone and the upper marlstone. The lower zone is dated as Middle Palaeocene and the upper two as Upper Palaeocene. Thus, on planktonic foraminiferal evidence, the Pondicherry Formation is Middle to Upper Palaeocene in age.
