Mineralogy of ferroan ankerite with the composition (Fe, Mn)0.67 (Mg)0.38 (Ca)0.93 C2O6 is discussed with the aid of X-ray, DTA, and chemical data. The mineral typically occurs in the iron-enriched carbonate bands, which are either closely associated or enclosed within the iron formation. Available evidence suggests syngenetic chemical sedimentary origin for the mineral.
