Five laterite profiles of Shevaroy and Kolli Hills in Salem district, Tamil Nadu, were investigated adopting Infrared Absorption analytical technique. Minerals were identified on the basis of characteristic IR absorption bands like 1000-1015 Cm-1, 1020-1023 Cm-1 (Singlet), 3510-3550 Cm-1 for gibbsite; 3660-3680 cm-1, 3165 Cm-1 and 1005-1024 Cm-1 (doublet) for kaolinite; 1100-1106 Cm-1, 870-895 Cm-1 for goethite; 780-785 cm-1, 800 cm-1 (doublet) for quartz and 1040 cm-1 for illite. The results support the in situ nature of the profiles.
