The area between the Jiri and Makru rivers in the Western Manipur hills. designated as the compressed fold zone by the geologists of the Assam Oil Company, remained inexplicable in the context of its relationship with the regional geological set-up. This prompted the authors to undertake detailed geological investigations in the area. The studies revealed that the compressed folds are illusory and the associated dip reversals are attributable to overturning of strata due to surface creep in both flanks of a single structure Kharkhublen Anticline.
