On the basis of calcite orientation, the temporal relations between crystallisation, folding and formation of foliation in the Chitradurga schist belt are attempted. Stress orientation at the time of deformation and spatial orientation of the hinge lines of syncrystallisation folds have been determined. While syntectonic recrystallisation seems to be the dominant mechanism, pressure solution and intracrystalline deformation might also have played a role in fabric development.
