Abstract

The Quaternary tectonics in the sub-Himalayan zone is postulated on the basis of the LANDSAT imagery study of the structural features in the area. These studies are corroborated by geomorphic evidences as well. The deposition of Katra fill at the foot of Trikuta hill, the entrenchment by river Tawi and deep gorge at the exit of river Tawi from Udhampur dun indicate neotectonism. The event resulted in the integration of fluvial system. This is evident from the presence of rock components of Inner Himalaya in the late Pleistocene deposits.

Abstract

The Lower Pleistocene palaeosols of the Upper Siwaliks of Jammu, J&K State are formed on the alluvium, though negligibly reworked and redistributed by the fluvial processes and, yet preserve the evidences of pedogenic processes. The clayey siltstones (Bt horizons) preserve the evidences of shrink-swell disruptions in the form of slickensides and striated b-fabrics. Illuvial accumulation of translocated clay in the form of clay coatings is well preserved. The field characters substantiated by micromorphological investigations suggest warm humid to semi-arid climatic conditions for the formation of semi-arid alfisols under the influence of periodic wetting and drying attributed to monsoonal seasonal climate.

Abstract

Reasonably convincing evidences of neotectonic activities in the Central Narmada Valley have come to light. The geomorphic investigation of litho-sections at Bedhaghat, near Jabalpur and Siddhaghat highlights the occurrence of such event in geologically younger times. The integration of observations has further helped in understanding the genesis and dating the waterfall at Bedhaghat.
