The problem of the determination of the stress and strain in a plate under the action of a force in its plane has been very ably bandied by several eminent mathematicians like Michell and Filon. But the case in which the plate is subjected to a couple in its plane seems to have received very little attention from earlier writers-a reference to only one particular case in which an infinite plate is subjected to a couple at any point, being given by Love.
