Vibrations of an Elliptic Plate

The problem of the vibrations of an elliptic plate was first discussed by Mathieu.* But the theory of Mathieu functions has been developed not very long ago.† A form of solution of Matbieu's equation suitable for certain porposes was given by Whittaker. The writer worked out the problem of the vibrations of an elliptic plate with the help of Whittakei's solution. § In the present paper the writer has presented the solution as well as the frequency equation in a more general form.
