Abstract

Start-up companies represent a powerful engine of the innovation process. The current study aims to establish a better understanding of the Start-up ecosystem in providing innovative healthcare solutions through the lens of intellectual property and relate it to policy gaps for supporting the Start-up ecosystem in India. This study found that about 397 healthcare Start-up companies have been established after 1 January 2010. The Questel Orbit database was used to conduct a patent search for the patents filed by these Start-ups from 1 January 2010 to 1 May 2020. A total of 3527 patents were retrieved and analyzed thoroughly to generate insights on the year-wise patent filing trend, geographical patent filing density, top aggressive patent filers, sector-wise filing density and a glimpse ofthe patent filing culture of healthcare Startups in India. The result shows that major filing has been done in the field of pharmaceuticals and biotechnology; and major healthcare market is the USA. Despite the Start-up culture being relatively new in India, the country’s healthcare Start-ups are among the top 10 patent filers globally. It is observed that Verily Life Sciences is the top healthcare patent filer globally and SigTuple is the top patent filer from India.

Abstract

The present study explores the opportunities for entrepreneurs in the medical device sector in India using a systematic patent landscape analysis. Currently, India imports about 80 percent of its requirement of medical devices. Identifying entrepreneurial opportunities and promotingentrepreneurship is therefore an essential factor for India to become “Atmanirbhar’’ or selfreliantin the medical device sector. There is an urgent need for entrepreneurship and innovation in this field.This study uses, for the first time, the patent landscaping as a tool to explore the potential entrepreneurial opportunities in medical devices. It further delves into themedical device market status in India, patentability and regulatory issues, government initiatives, etc.- giving a snapshot of the promising areasof medical devices for entrepreneurs to venture into.

Abstract

The National Education Policy 2020 is a fantastic move by the Indian government to transform the educational system. The aim to make higher education more multidisciplinary and comprehensive like making curriculum more adaptable, developing e-courses in regional languages, and introducing skill-development course are appreciated. However, the policy does not specifically mention intellectual property, innovation, and entrepreneurship—key elements of transferring higher education institution into a research and innovation focussed institution, which is the need of the hour. The current study looked at the role of intellectual property, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship and made some recommendations on how to integrate them into academic curricula so that NEP's goals can be met fully and faster.
