According to the Brahmavaivarta Purana, the Earthly universe is divided into several regions called the 'lokas', seven regions of the upper world and seven of the Netherworld. Whereas the regions of the upper world are known as the 'Lokas' the regions of the netherworld are called the 'Tal' or 'Taal'.
The popular term "Chandra Lok"-Land of the Moon in Indian philosophy does not signify the populace on the Moon, the satellite of the Earth. So also the term "Surya Lok"-the Land of the Sun does not mean the Sun, the star of our solar system. Similarly the "Pataal" does not signify the continent of America as a land lying geographically opposite on the earth, nor does it signify any kind of land below the surface of the earth as are commonly and yet erroneously perceived, interpreted and propagated. These concepts as have already been clearly defined in the basic Indian philosophy are discussed in their correct scientific perspective and relevance.
The purpose of doing the present exercise is to invoke the young Indian scientific community (particularly physicists) to take a scientific look at our Vedic heritage, read and look to Vedas from purely scientific point of view and not as something concerned with religion.
