Abstract

The tribe Vernonieae of the Asteraceae with about 70 genera and 1500 species has two main centres of distribution in tropical America and tropical Africa. It is also fairly well represented in south-east Asia. 37 genera are monotypie. In South India about 50 species belonging to 5 genera have been recorded. This review makes a current assessment of the systematic status of the tribe from various points of view, morphology-anatomy, cytology, chemical constituents, geographical distribution, based on a recent study of the tribe by one of the authors. It has been shown that some of the morphological-anatomical attributes like, trichomes, stomata, pappus, inflorescence, cytological situation as revealed by a karyomorphological analysis, chemical constitutes like flavonoid compounds and geographical distributional features, may all be of value in the assessment of the systematic status of the taxa concerned. Some nomenclatural aspects have also been discussed.

Abstract

This paper records new localities for the occurrence of the following flowering plants: Allmania nodiflora R. Br. var. angustifolia Hook, f., Senecio levingii Clarke and Fritillaria cirrhosa D. Don. Two very rare plants of Western Himalayas viz., Falconeria himalaica Hook. f. (= Wulfenia himalaica (Hook, f.) Pennell.) and Balanophora involucrala Hook. f. & Thoms, are also recorded in this paper.

Abstract

The paper gives an account of the vegetation as observed by the author during a recent plant collection tour in the Chandra and Bhaga river valleys of Lahul (Kangra District, Panjab) beyond the Rohtang Pass. Plants were collected in the altitude range 3000 to 4000 metres and the paper includes a list of plants collected with brief descriptions, altitude of occurrences and uses, if any.

Abstract

In the system of Scientific Botanical Gardens of the Soviet Union, there are 91 Gardens located in different climatic zones. These Gardens are important centres of research for scientific studies of plant introduction, acclimatisation, drought and frost resistance and other problems and are provided with well equipped laboratories. The Gardens are also recognised post-graduate training centres. The impressions gathered by the author during a recent visit to some of these well known Gardens of the Soviet Union are briefly recorded in this paper.

Abstract

The distribution of vegetation in the altitude range, 1500 to 3500 metres and the composition of the main Rhododendron campanulatum-Behula utilis and Abies spectabilis-Betula utilis-Quercus semecarpifolia forests as observed by the author during a recent plant collection tour in the Jumnotri area of Tehri-Garhwal Himalayas are described in the paper. The herbaceous vegetation in the forests is very rich and many monocotyledonous species are represented. The paper includes an enumeration of the plants collected during the tour.

Abstract

Alectra parasitica A. Rich., with a wide distribution in Eastern & North-Eastern Africa but hitherto not recorded from this country has now been collected in the Banda District of Uttar Pradesh. Since the Indian plant differs from the African specimens in the strongly rhizomatous development of the underground parts of the stem, it has been described as a new variety and is named A. parasitica A. Rich., var. chitrakutensis M. A. Rau, var. nov.

Abstract

Brief notes are given on three rare plants of the Western Himalayas, viz. Stylophorum lactucoides Baill. (Papaveraceae), Triosteum hirsutum Wall. (Caprifoliaceae) and Epipogium tuberosum Duthie.(Orchidaceae). The last named, a terrestrial, leafless orchid previously known only from Kashmir, has now been collected in the Kulu Himalayas.

Abstract

The paper gives an account of the recent collection of flowering plants and ferns from the Garhwal Himalayas, made by the author during the years 1957 to 1959 in which nearly 1500 gatherings were made which on study yielded 738 species. The area covered by this study lies between 30° and 31° N., and 79° and 80° E., and includes the Alaknanda, Arwa, Bhyundar, Khiraun, Mandakini and Nandakini river valleys and their neighbouring glacial beds, mountain slopes and meadows ranging in altitude between 2000 and 4500 metres. Cypripedium elegans Reichb. f., a rare terrestrial orchid was collected for the first time in Western Himalayas.

Abstract

This paper records new localities for the occurrence of the following species of flowering plants: Callianthemum rutaefolium C. A. Mey. (Ranunculaceae) from Kashmir; Onopordon acanthium L. (Compositae) from Kashmir; Flaveria australasica Hook. (Compositae), an introduced weed now extending to Uttar Pradesh; Cypripedium elegans Reichb. f. (Orchidaceae) previously known only from Sikkim and East Tibet, recently recorded from Nepal and now collected in North Garhwal and Merendera persica Boiss & Kotsch. (Liliaceae) from Kashmir. Streptolirion cordifolium (Griff.) Kuntze, a climbing member of the Commelinaceae has been recorded from North Garhwal where it has only been infrequently collected in the past.

Abstract

The Chimgan Valley located at a distance of about 100 kms. from Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan S.S.R. is floristically very interesting. The valley is scattered with tree of Juniperus seravschanica Kom. and the herbaceous vegetation is rich. Many of the genera met with in the vally are also mated in the mountain flora of India, particularly of the western Himalayas and were thus of considerable interest. The paper includes a 1ist of species collected during the excursion.

Abstract

The paper gives a brief account of the vegetation in the valley and around Lake Hemkund in late autumn as observed by the author during a recent visit. The paper also records, for the first time, the occurrence of Epipogium tuberosum Duthie, the rare saprophytic orchid which was previously known orfly from Kashmir and was recently recorded from Kulu Himalayas, thus extending its known distribution further eastwards. A photograph of the singular woolly species of Saussurea gathered at an altitude of 4400 m is included.
