Abstract

With a view to develop an industrially viable and economically feasible process for the preparation of non-toxic, completely and easily biodegradable surface active agents, derived entirely from renewable resources of the country, a long range study has been undertaken in our laboratory. The title compounds have been prepared by the transesterification reaction between fatty acid esters and sucrose. The products obtained have been purified and tested for their performance as surface active agents. The different surface active properties determined are detergency, surface tension, foaming, wetting and emulsification. The present work shows that some of the compounds are as active as the standard compounds like sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate. Most of these compounds exhibit large drop in surface tension. The cmc obtained by the surface tension versus log concentration curves is found to be in the range of 0.02 to .07 per cent. These compounds are very good detergents and emulsifiers with a moderate wetting property.

Abstract

Our earlier work on developing general purpose surfactants from indigenously available renewable resources gave very encouraging results. A systematic study has now been made to extend this work further with a view to select the right raw materials and the most economically viable and technically feasible process. The choice lay between four alternate processes and over a dozen conventional as well as non-conventional oils. Different surfactant properties viz. surface tension, detergency, lime soap dispersion and emulsification of some of these products, technical as well as purified, have been determined to assess their suitability and afford a comparison with the conventional surfactants likes sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate. Due to the non-toxic nature and complete biodegradability, these sucrose esters are highly recommended for use in pharmaceutical and food industries besides the normal usage.

Abstract

Mixed monolyers of polyvinyal stearate with hexadecoxy ethanol, octadecoxy ethanol and hexadecoxy propanol have been studied on Langmuir film balance at liquid-air interface at 25°C. All the three systems are found to be miscible and non-ideal.
