Evaluation of surface roughness of machined surfaces is useful in predicting the functional performance of the components. This will also help in providing evidence of fore-warnings of functional disasters. The objective of this paper is to present our research findings in the area of surface texture characterization so as to create a platform for further research in the field of surface metrology. An attempt is also made to show how the focus on surface roughness is shifting from profile to areal characterization and also to highlight the challenges faced in the surface texture characterization.

Abstract

Evaluation of surface roughness of machined surfaces is useful in predicting the functional performance of the components. This will also help in providing evidence of fore-warnings of functional disasters. The objective of this paper is to present our research findings in the area of surface texture characterization so as to create a platform for further research in the field of surface metrology. An attempt is also made to show how the focus on surface roughness is shifting from profile to areal characterization and also to highlight the challenges faced in the surface texture characterization.
