Magnetorheological Fluids

What are MR Fluids?
Smart materials can sense changes in the surrounding environment and are able to generate a desired response that is based on these changes. Magnetorheological (MR) fluids are non-colloidal suspensions of micrometer-sized magnetizable particles suspended in non-magnetic liquids. They exhibit dramatic changes in their rheological properties that result from the magnetization induced in the particles when a magnetic field is applied. The interactions between the resulting induced dipoles cause the particles to form chain-like structures parallel to the held, which increase the resistance of the MR fluid to flow.
