Against the backdrop of persistent 'multi-dimensional human development' needs, this paper builds a case for convergence of several isolated programme with National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) to avoid duplication of efforts. This paper finds that microfinance and empowerment form a complex, unsystematic and amorphous relationship, whereby actual role of commercialised microfinance in causing empowerment becomes debatable. Microfinance/ financing have to lose centrality in favor of multifarious NRLM, whose leading objective is to promote social action, livelihoods and social awareness. 'Stand-up India' may be converged into NRLM due to the commonality of objectives. Need for complete (socialeconomic) convergence of all development programmes with NRLM based on common objectives is observed.
