The sustainability of livelihoods of any community largely depends on their access to livelihood assets (natural, physical, social, human and financial capital), which they can exchange or cash-in during times of crisis. People’s ability to generate or increase their livelihood assets depends on their access to productive resources and their ability to control and use resources effectively. The Integrated Coastal Zone Management Programme-West Bengal project aims to improve the resilience of coastal communities and provide livelihood security, as bulk of the activities under the programme have income generating potential including ecotourism, fisheries, afforestation, and small-scale enterprises. On the basis of information obtained from 40 self-help groups (SHGs) and 200 SHG members, this study makes an attempt to estimate the livelihood development and return on investment of various income generating activities of SHG members

Abstract

The sustainability of livelihoods of any community largely depends on their access to livelihood assets (natural, physical, social, human and financial capital), which they can exchange or cash-in during times of crisis.
