Abstract

The polyurethane ionomers were synthesized at two temperature range using PEG, different diisocyanate [Tolylene diisocyanate (TDI), 1,6-diisocyanatohexane (HMDI), Isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), 4,4'- methyl bis(cyclohexyl isocyanates) (H₁₂MDI), 4,4'- methyl bis(phenyl isocyanates) (MDI)] and dihydroxy benzoic acid. All the polymer solutions were cast in a mold to form a film on evaporation of the solvent. All the films were conditioned and characterized by FT-IR, FT-NMR, Gel permeation chromatography and particle size analysis. The hemocompatibility of the polyurethane films were determined by thrombogenicity, haemolysis and platelet adhesion test. The PUs synthesized from TDI and HMDI showed better hemocompatibility at higher temperature range (90-95 °C) than the other polymers.

Abstract

Agriculture or farming, is the simplification of nature's food webs and re-channel energy for human planting and animal consumption. In the current scenario, farmers use inorganic fertilizers to provide nutrients to the soil. Fertilizers typically provide, in varying proportions, six macronutrients: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sulfur (S) and eight micronutrients: boron (B), chlorine (Cl), copper (Cu), iron (Fe),manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), zinc (Zn) and nickel (Ni). There are two types of fertilizers namely organic and inorganic/chemical fertilizers. A chemical fertilizer is defined as any inorganic material of wholly or partially synthetic origin that is added to the soil to sustain plant growth. Organic fertilizers are substances that are derived from the remains or by products of organisms which contain the essential nutrients for plant growth. Chemical fertilizers, in effect, "kill" the soil while organic fertilizers improve and sustain the soil. Chemical fertilizers provide short term results yet, in the long term, damage the soil, ground water and our health. Hence there is a need to opt for an alternative approach in the agricultural field. This paper reviews the various production methodologies of biofertilizers, the current research in its development and usage. There are many species which have been under research for developing biofertilizers like azolla, azospirillum, mycorrhiza, cyanobacteria etc. This paper focuses on the special features of sea weeds which can be used as a bio-fertilizers and the future perspective of the organic farming technology.

Abstract

Most anti-cancer drugs are based on a differential killing of cancer cells. Development of cancer therapy has largely been driven by the assumption that if we screen enough drugs we will find drugs with a mechanism of action which allows a greater discrimination between normal cells and cancer cells. From a biochemical (or pharmacological) point of view there is very little difference between normal and cancer cells, i.e. pharmacological specificity of anticancer agents is very low for most cancers. So the drug delivery systems should try to exploit the differences between cancer and normal cells because of differences in accessibility - physiological/anatomical factors. In the past few decades, considerable attention has been focused on the development of novel drug delivery system (NDDS) for anticancer drugs. Currently developed delivery systems for anticancer agents include colloidal systems (liposomes, emulsions, nanoparticles and micelles), polymer implants and polymer conjugates. This review focuses on the development of polymer nanomedicines, its pre-clinical and clinical investigations and the future perspectives.
