Meghalaya recently has been adding significantly to its aged population. The distinctive aspect of this largely tribal society is its continuation of a social order, which is matrilineal. The women enjoy a much higher social status particularly based on a system of inheritance along female line and matri-local marriage institution. It may therefore be exceedingly interesting to examine the issue of the aged section and care of the aged in such a society that distinguishes itself from the rest not only in North- East but also from rest of the country. Keywords
