Medicines derived from plant extracts are being increasingly utilized to treat a wide variety of diseases, though relatively little knowledge about their mode of action is available. There is a growing interest in the pharmacological evaluation of various plants used in Indian traditional systems of medicine. Thus, the present review highlights the overview of Eulophia ochreata Lindl. It is an important medicinal plant from Orchidaceae family and it has diverse biological activity. It is used in traditional folk medicine system in most part of the mahatrastra district. Based on survey, herbs used for the review has well established histories of human use for the treatment of rheumatic and arthritic conditions. The present review article also highlights the properties, potential, therapeutic uses, pharmacological activity and research on Eulophia ochreata L. Hence, there is urgent need to utilize ancient knowledge of Eulophia ochreata L. to bring its maximum potential in the field of medical and pharmaceutical sciences in novel herbal drug development which will economically benefited for common man. Keywords

Medicinal herbs are the local heritage with global importance. World is endowed with a rich wealth of medicinal herbs. The different variety of plants with different therapeutic properties is quiet astonishing. Jatropha gossypifolia Linn (Euphorbiaceae) is a large genus of shrubs, herbs and trees distributed in the tropical parts of the world. A decoction of the bark is used as an emmenagogue, that of the leaves for stomach ache, venereal diseases and as blood purifier. The plant has been used ethnomedically to prevent cancerous growth. The plant is very popular in all Maharashtra and Jatropha gossypifolia Linn has suggested in the Indian system of medicine for number of diseases. The plant is known to possess various active agents such as flavonoids, triterpenoids, sterols (phytosterol), tannins, essential and volatile oils. The anti inflammatory activity of the aqueous and dichloromethane extract of the leaves of Jatropha gossypifolia Linn was investigated with experimental animal model using the carrageenan induced rat paw edema method. The extract 200mg/kg at 240min post treatment caused a significant (p<0.05) reduction in the paw oedema in rats. The effect of the extract was more pronounced at the dose 200mg/kg and was closer to that of ibuprofen 10mg/kg. The finding of the studies indicate that the aqueous extract and dichloromethane extract of leaves of Jatropha gossypifolia Linn had good anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan induced hind paw edema in rats between 2 to 3 hours.

Vitex negundo belonging to the family verbanaceae has been reported to posses many medicinal properties according to indigenous system of medicine. The present work deals with antimycobacterial and antimicrobial activity of vitex negundo leaves. The different solvent extracts of the leaves prepared were studied for their antimycobacterial activity by Conventional proportion method and Nitrate reductase assay method. The activity was compared with standard drugs rifampicin and isoniazid. The ethanolic, successive ethanolic and methanolic extracts showed highest antitubercular activity, while petroleum ether extract and chloroform extract was moderately active as compared to other extracts of Nirgundi. Aqueous, benzene, acetone extract does not shows any antitubercular activity Antimicrobial activity of all extracts was screened by Paper Disc method against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. The benzene extract showed significant antimicrobial activity compared to petroleum ether and chloroform extract. Preliminary phytochemicals of all extracts were also investigated.
Conclusion: In conclusion nitrate reductase assay was found to be rapid, inexpensive and easy to perform. It also showed good concordance between conventional proportion method and nitrate reductase assay.
All these findings justified the claim made in the indigenous system of medicine for the use of the plant vitex negundo against tuberculosis and many other micro-organisms.

In this study we have determined the total phenolic, flavonoid content and antioxidant activity of pet. ether, aqueous and alcoholic extract of the stem bark of Careya arborea Roxb. (Lecythidaceae). Folin-ciocalteu method was used to determine the total phenolic content and flavonoid contents of these extract were assessed by aluminium chloride method. The antioxidant activities were determined by DPPH method. Aqueous extract and alcoholic extract showed presence of phenolic and flavonoid content and hence possessed greater antioxidant activity. Pet. ether extract containing very less amount of phenol and flavonoids, did not showed any antioxidant activity. The results suggest that the plant is good source of antioxidants and support their use in various diseases. Keywords
