Abstract

In the present study anti-anaemic effect of the petroleum ether, solvent ether, ethyl acetate, butanol and butanon extracts of Cordia dichotoma Forst.f. fruits was evaluated in albino rats. The rats were made anaemic as per standard procedure and were treated daily by extracts in the dose of 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg body weight for 15 days p.o. After 15 days of daily treatment with the extracts of fruits, the haematological parameters measured are clotting time, bleeding time, hemoglobin content, total count of red blood corpuscles, white blood cells and differential count of leucocytes. From the statistical analysis of the study it has been found that ethyl acetate, butanol and butanon extract of C. dichotoma fruits causes significant dose dependent rise in hemoglobin content and RBC count. However, reduction in clotting and bleeding time was not found to be dose dependent. The WBC count was found to rise only in higher doses of extracts (300mg). In case of higher doses (200 and 300mg/kg body weight) the extracts of fruits reduced the clotting and bleeding time, where as lower dose (100 mg/kg body weight) there was no significant change in bleeding and clotting time. The results suggest that the extracts of C. dichotoma fruits have significant ant-anaemic effect and are haematologically non toxic.

Abstract

The present study was aimed to review the pharmacological actions and preliminary phytochemical investigation of Hydnocarpus wightiana belonging to Flacourtiaceae family. It has been exploited traditionally for leprosy, rheumatic pain, inflammation and skin diseases. The alcoholic extract of ischolar_mains of Hydnocarpus wightiana showed the presence of glycosides, flavonoids, carbohydrates, proteins, tannins, saponins, steroids and triterpenoids.

Abstract

Plants have anchored to the mother earth long before man has set his feet and it is said that god had endowed them with materials for survival of man and animal long before these creatures were made by him. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about 80% of the population is still depends upon these herbal medicines for their treatment of diseases due to easy availability, economic and less side effects when compared to allopathic system of medicines. Prosopis juliflora also comes under that category. It belongs to the family Leguminosae commonly known as mesquite. Prosopis species had a role as traditional medicine. The genus has been used as a folk remedy for catarrh, cold, diarrhea, dysentery, excrescences, flu, hoarseness, inflammation, measles, sore throat and in healing of wounds. This genus has more pharmacological activities like anthelmintic, antioxidant, antipyretic, antiulcer, cytotoxicity effect, antigiardial, amoebicidal and antipustule activity. The phytoconstituents present in this plant are tannins, phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenes and steroids. So this review article is a collective source of the various information regarding Prosopis juliflora published in various journals and books.

Abstract

The genus Polygonum (Polygonaceae), comprising about 300 species, is distributed worldwide, mostly in north temperate climates, is interesting from both biological and phytochemical perspectives. In this review, a contemporary summary of biological and pharmacological investigate on Polygonum chinensis belong to family polygonaceae will be presented and critically evaluated. The plant consists of alkaloids, amino acids, carbohydrates and glycosides, fixed oils and fats, flavones and flavanones, gums and mucilage, phenolic compounds and tannins, proteins, saponins, sterols, and triterpenoids.The Significant findings in the treatment of various diseases such as snake-bites, inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, antiviral, antiseptic, antifungal, diabetic, hypertension, hyperlipemia, jaundice, hemorrhage, cough, fever, ulcers, skin inffections, anemia, diarrhea and various urologic disorders, have been presented in ethnobotanical reports.

Abstract

Most of the drugs used in primitive medicine were obtained from plants and are the earliest and principal natural source of medicines. Plants are a reservoir of potentially useful chemical compounds which serve as drugs and provide newer leads and clues for modern design by synthesis. Callistemon lanceolatus DC belongs to the family Myrtaceae commonly known as bottle brush, is frequently cultivated throughout India in gardens as ornamental plant. Humming birds love the flowers, and the plant. Callistemon species had a role as traditional bush medicine. The genus is known in folk medicine for its anti-cough, anti-bronchitis, and insecticidal effects and its volatile oils have been used as anti-microbial and anti-fungal agents, anti-phylococcal, nematicidal, larvicidal, pupicidal agent. The phytoconstituents present in this plant are flavonoids, tannins, saponins, steroids, monoterpenoids, triterpenoids, phloroglucinol derivatives, carbohydrates, proteins and essential oils. So this review article is a collective source of the various information regarding Callistemon lanceolatus published in various journals and books.

Abstract

Ichnocarpus frutescens R.Br (Family: Apocyanaceae) is an ever green medicinal herb found almost throughout Asia and other regions. The whole part of Ichnocarpus was (ischolar_main, flowers and leaves) reported to use for various medical illness such as, demulcent, syphilis, loss of sensation and hemiplegia, head aches fevers, wounds between fingers tonic, diaphoretic, diuretic and dyspepsia and skin troubles. It is mainly administered with milk for diabetes mellitus, excretion of the stone in the bladder and purification of blood. Phytochemical studies on the various parts of Ichnocarpus have revealed the presence of phenylpropanoids, phenolic acids, carbohydrates, saponins, proteins, amino acids, coumarines, alkaloids, flavonoids, sterols and pentacyclic triterpenoids. Pharmacological investigations have demonstrated that Ichnocarpus possess antiinflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, membranestabilizer, hepatoprotective, antiurolithiatic, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, cardioprotective, antioxidant, antihyperlipidemicand cytoprotective activities.

Abstract

Plants are the principle source of raw materials for plant based medicine since ancient times. The traditional herbal medicines are receiving great importance in the health care sector. In Indian system of medicine i.e, ayurveda, one of the plant Naravelia zeylanica (Linn) DC belonging to family ranunculaceae has been used in the treatment of helminthiasis, dermatopathy, leprosy, rheumatalgia, odontalgia, colic inflammation, wounds and ulcers. It is distributed throughout india mainly in warm regions of Eastern Himalayas, Assam, Bengal, Bihar and greater parts of Deccan Peninsula. The aerial parts of Naravelia zeylanica traditionally used in vitiated vata, pitta, inflammation, skin diseases. The present study revel the pharmacological activates and presence of phytoconstituents likealkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, etc. in Naravelia zeylanica.
