Sludge is the by-product of wastewater treatment. It contains multitude of pollutants. The presently available treatment technologies are not free from drawbacks and less efficient as well. In the present study, sludge characteristics (sludge generation process, type of sludge, components and impact on environment) and its conventional and ultrasonic treatment methods, its mechanism, and sonochemistry to treat sludge and various hazardous organic pollutants is discussed. This may lead to optimisation of ultrasonic treatment of wastewater and exploring novel alternative technologies.

Abstract

Sludge is the by-product of wastewater treatment. It contains multitude of pollutants. The presently available treatment technologies are not free from drawbacks and less efficient as well. In the present study, sludge characteristics (sludge generation process, type of sludge, components and impact on environment) and its conventional and ultrasonic treatment methods, its mechanism, and sonochemistry to treat sludge and various hazardous organic pollutants is discussed. This may lead to optimisation of ultrasonic treatment of wastewater and exploring novel alternative technologies.
