Authors

Journal of Pure and Applied Ultrasonics, Vol 38, No 3 (2016), Pagination: 88-88Abstract
This thesis is a theoretical study for the characterization of materials having NaCl-type structure. For characterization of the materials, its elastic behaviour and mechanical properties are analyzed. Since propagation of ultrasonic waves through a medium is the characteristic of the medium, the ultrasonic velocity and attenuation coefficient for the waves give the idea about the thermophysical properties of the material.- Ultrasonic Study of Smart Materials for Engineering Applications

A biomass gasifier was in operation for sometime and later failed near the weld portion. A portion of the sample near the failed region was cut and used for this investigation. Study based on ultrasonic velocity measurements, metallography and X-ray diffraction was carried out at different portions of samples of stainless steel used in the biomass gasifier. Precise ultrasonic velocity measurements were performed by pulse echo method using cross correlation technique. Longitudinal ultrasonic wave generating probes of 5 and 20 MHz were used. It is found that there is an increase in ultrasonic velocity in samples obtained from the exposed portion as compared to the virgin samples. Metallographic studies revealed that there is a microstructural reformation taking place due to prolonged temperature treatment at the regions away from the failed portion. Very near the failed portion, there is intergranular type crack propagation as a result of partial sensitization and embrittlement. X-ray diffraction study is in support of the metallographic observations. The increase in ultrasonic velocities in service exposed specimen with and without intergranular cracks was attributed to the continuous changes taking place in the microstructures. It is suggested that periodic monitoring of the critical parts especially the combustion zone by NDE techniques would help avoid premature failure of the biomass gasifier plant. Keywords

- Behavioral Study of Ultrasound Wave Propagation in Biological Tissues
Authors
Source
Journal of Pure and Applied Ultrasonics, Vol 34, No 4 (2012), Pagination: 93-93Abstract
The biological tissue has a complex structure which shows an unpredictable behavior for ultrasonic waves. The acoustical properties of various tissues are different and phenomenon like scattering diffraction, attenuation and nonlinearity. The nonlinearity leads to the distortion of the transmitted beam while spreading energy in higher harmonics, and images are acquired preferably by receiving those of second harmonic, known as tissue harmonic imaging (THI). The harmonic image often demonstrates improved contrast resolution due to higher harmonic frequencies and therefore detects smaller objects. High frequencies are, however, attenuated more in biological tissues as the beam propagates, leading to reduced depth of penetration inside the objects under scan. A new imaging technique named "super-harmonic imaging" (SHI) has been proposed recently. It takes advantage of the higher harmonics (third to fifth) arises from nonlinear propagation. It provides further enhancement in resolution with acceptable penetration depth and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The dedicated phased array transducer and propagation model that enables the full exploitation of SHI are the topics of ongoing research.- Author Index

The field of ultrasonics has made phenomenal progress in last 3 decades due to advances in materials and electronics for generation, detection and control of ultrasonic waves. A large number of laboratory level ultrasonic equipment have been commercialized in this period. Applications such as non-destructive testing medical imaging, underwater communication, industrial processing and process control, etc. are now ubiquitous. Some of the commercially available ultrasonic equipments are high power cleaners, welders, grinders, flaw detectors, thickness gauge, Doppler velocimeters, medical scanners, therapy units, atomizers, nebulizers, dental sealers, etc. As compared to many electromagnetic waves based devices ultrasound has the advantage of adaptability, greater penetration, non-hazardous, non-invasive, less expensive, etc.- Forthcoming Events and Conferences

- Ultrasonic Characterisation of Compatible Solvent Mixture in Dewaxing of Crude Oil
Authors
Source
Journal of Pure and Applied Ultrasonics, Vol 41, No 2 (2019), Pagination: 55-55Abstract
One of the major challenges in crude oil refinery is dewaxing of crude oil. Thesis presents a detailed discussion on the energy production from different sources, indicates that the technologies used for the process of dewax is not adequate or improvised as compared to other resources. This is either due to lack of proper technology or deficiency in application of basic mechanism of scientific ideas or economic benefit. The entire work describes cost effective, non-destructive technique, easy and innovative method for wax minimization through ultrasonic assistance. The thesis is presented in eight chapters. In the present work crude oil samples like light, heavy were collected from Onta, USA and Mathura refinery, Uttar Pradesh, India. The extraction technology and separation science is based on the basic mechanism of ultrasonic assisted solvent extraction whichis easier and highly efficient. The estimation of wax content in the crude oil is done to predict the paraffin component of crude oil collected from different countries. Again the compatibility of blended chemicals for dewaxing are verified by studying the molecular interaction through ultrasonic assistance with different physical parameters like effect of temperature and ultrasonic frequencies.- An Embedded System based Approach to Pulsed Ultrasonic Instrumentation

Journal of Pure and Applied Ultrasonics, Vol 42, No 2 (2020), Pagination: 53-53Abstract
Study on the properties of polymer solutions have been extensively used for under standing solute-solvent and solute-solute interactions. Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone (PVP), an amorphous water soluble synthetic polymer, is used by a wide variety of industries, such as medicine, cosmetics, textile, adhesives, because of its interesting properties such as low cytotoxicity. PVP are used in DNA and RNA extractions from plants. Ammonium per sulphateis a strong oxidizing agent and radical initiator. It has also been utilized to study protein - protein interactions via photo initiated cross linking chemistry. The present thesis deals with ultrasonic and thermo dynamical properties of aqueous mixtures of zinc sulphate and manganese sulphate with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) at 303 K, 308 K and 313 K. Physico-chemical study also has been made in the present thesis in the aqueous inorganic salt mixtures by with the help of acoustical excess parameters and theoretical velocities at 303 K. The present dissertation encompasses VI chapters. Chapter-I deals with the introductory aspects of ultrasound investigation of molecular interaction in the liquid mixtures. A relevant review of literature to the present work has also been presented.- One Day Intra - Collegiate Competition on Ultrasonics (ICCU 2020) USI Students' Chapter III, Kamaraj College, Thoothukudi-628003

In section A, the effort has been made to develop a theoretical approach for the evaluation of second order elastic constants (SOECs) and third order elastic constants (TOECs), ultrasonic attenuation, velocity and other associated parameters in different type of crystalline materials at different physical conditions like temperature, pressure, orientation, etc. These advanced materials are very useful for many industrial applications.
