Study of Palmar Dermatoglyphics in Patients with Essential Hypertension among South Indian Population

The study of epidermal ridges and their configuration is called dermatoglyphics. The term was coined by Cummins and Midlo.

The present study was conducted in the department of Medicine, JSS Medical College and Hospital, Mysore, India on 200 South Indian patients with essential hypertension to determine the predominant dermatoglyphic markers for hypertension. One hundred males and one hundred females of South India origin were included for this study and rolled prints were taken from all the digits and also palm print was taken and stored on a proforma.

We found that in hypothenar area, male patients left hands showed absent pattern more than controls. In I2, female patients showed absent pattern more than controls. In males both for right and left hands, patients had lower Simian type I pattern than controls.

These parameters can be used as dermatoglyphic markers for screening purpose i.e., early detection of hypertensive's.
