A Study on Elderly Abuse, Violence and Neglect in Haryana

Elder abuse is a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. India is the second most populated country in the world with a population of 1.3 billion, China being the first (Consensus, 2011). Out of this huge population, 53 million are females and 51 million are males. In this population divide the old age persons (both males & females) were 104 millions. The present study was conducted in Hisar and Rohtak districts from Haryana state with objective to know the impact of abusive behavior o f family members among elderly. From each selected district 30 elderly persons both male and female were selected through snowball technique. Thus, the total number of respondents were 60 elderly persons. A pretested interview schedule was used to collect data. The results highlighted that in respect to age, majority (41.6%) o f the respondents were belonged to the age group o f 60-69. In respect to marital status, maximum (45.00%) of the respondents were widow. Regarding family type, 68.4 per cent of the respondents were belonged to nuclear family. Majority of the respondents (38.4%) were retired. Maximum (48.4%) of the respondents having their monthly family income between up to Rs. 30000 per month. Maximum (58.4%) of the respondents agreed that they were financial abuse as well as misuse money/property by their family members followed by (50.00%) ofthe respondents having the problem of calling bad names/using abusive language, (46.7%) verbal/psychological abuse.
