Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on the Quality of Sleep: Role of Increased Isolation and Maximised Screen Time

The novel coronavirus pandemic left the entire global population in a state of utter disarray, wherein the shift in lifestyle changes was witnessed at an all-encompassing rate. The pandemic led to an overall regression in the amount of physical activity, quality of dietary habits, predicament of mental health, and vitally, sleep cycles. According to the study conducted, a whopping 49% of the responders admitted to experiencing an observable increase in their sleeping hours during the pandemic leading to lethargy, often associated with weight gain and trouble concentrating. The same was correlated to the average screen time of the individual and observable physical changes falling under the umbrella of the impact of social isolation. The aftermath of the viral outbreak on the sleeping habits of the population cannot and frankly should not be disregarded. The disruption caused to the same is the catalyst for long-term lifestyle lapse. Proactive parental support and conscious engagement in physical activity are necessitated when faced with the aforementioned adversity.
