It seeks to find out if the work-life balance efforts of the urban working women led to wellbeing. It is a qualitative study carried out in triads consisting of the respondent (woman), her spouse or a significant family member and an office colleague. NVIVO and DICTION were used for analysis. The study showed that Indian women upheld patriarchal values. To manage their occupations women showed their preference for a joint family over the nuclear family. Women handled work-life balance but the effort led to stress. Work gave them respect as an earning family member. Their motivation to continue to work gave them different coping methods.</p> Preeti S. Later on, researchers focused on understanding and explaining the bi-directional work-family enrichment, i.e., work-to-family enrichment (WFE) and family-to-work enrichment (FWE). Based on work-family enrichment framework located in the positive interface domain of work and family, this paper systemat ically reviews a large body of empirical literature and proposed a theoretical framework. Specifically, the authors discuss in detail the antecedents and outcomes, moderating and mediating roles as studied in WFE and FWE domains, and build up the nomological framework. The paper also identifies sparsely worked areas and limitations and suggests future scope of research herein.</p> Munmun Goswami, Anita Sarkar https://i-scholar.in/index.php/ijir/article/view/214787 Sun, 01 May 2022 00:00:00 +0000 Leadership - Dignity Framework: The Role of Individualized Human Resource Management (HRM) Practices https://i-scholar.in/index.php/ijir/article/view/214793 In the wake of multitude of crises that we face today, the humanistic management of organizations has become a moral imperative. Recently ‘Workplace Dignity’ has found its mention in the contemporary analyses of work, ethnographies and inquiries into humanization of work. This study introduces a leadership - dignity framework in the context of individualized human resource management (HRM) practices like Idiosyncratic deals (I-deals). A new leadership – dignity framework is presented and further, drawing upon the social comparison and self-verification theory, it examines the role of extension of I-deals in the leader-employee relationship under the dignity paradigm. The paper contributes to the leader-employee relationship literature with relevant inputs towards conceptualization of dignity at work, enhancing the overall employee experiences in organizations. Even though VMPs existed for more than a decade, the pandemic has accelerated their prevalence in academia and businesses. This paper goes beyond the usual debate on effectiveness of an in-person versus a VMP facilitated online interaction to propose that the effectiveness of VMPs will vary even with the type of online activity. Drawing on the extant literature and deploying a sample of 100 experts from academia and industry, the authors identified five generic components of group interaction, and empirically estimated the relative effectiveness of VMPs in facilitating five common online activities including classes, meetings, interviews. Data collected from 190 managers working in an MNC operating in the IT/ITES domain in India was used to examine how the six contextual factors influence affective commitment. The managers surveyed were the survivors of the downsizing effort. Results suggest that except all three organizational justice, all other factors significantly positively impacted employee commitment. The current study examines the relationship of embodied self-regulation (ESR) and self-transcendence (ST) with CPS. It also investigates how the Yogabased Practices (YBP), a holistic intervention, impact ESR and ST. To test the hypotheses, two studies were conducted with a sample of respondents having prior professional experience enrolled in a management program. First study supported the theoretical model of ESR and ST as antecedents of CPS, and second study indicated the positive impact of YBP on ESR and ST, respectively. This research extends the literature on CPS training and discusses the theoretical and managerial implications. The model empirically examined the influence of work values (extrinsic, intrinsic, status-related, freedom-related, and social-related) to perceived organizational support (POS) alongside its further influence on job attitudes - affective commitment (AC), felt obligation (FO), job satisfaction (JS) and turnover intention (TI) from 320 valid responses. The study establishes that this connected, unconventional generation seeks to balance both extrinsic and intrinsic values. Being transactional, they value organizational support towards achieving individual goals but will not shy away from taking up viable and promising opportunities if it comes their way.</p> Soumi Rai https://i-scholar.in/index.php/ijir/article/view/214867 Sun, 01 May 2022 00:00:00 +0000 Growth of Output & Productivity of the Indian Organized Manufacturing Industries: A Comparative Study of Fifteen Major States https://i-scholar.in/index.php/ijir/article/view/214868 <p>This paper attempts to estimate growth of output and productivity of the organized manufacturing industries in India during 1981-82 to 2010-2011, the pre- and post-reform period (1981-82 to 1990-91 and 1991-92 to 2010-11 respectively) as well as over the decades during the period. This study deals with the case of the largest private steel maker in India. The company in its bid to maintain competitiveness in a new business environment altered the dy namics betwe en worker- employer and worker-worker relations. We find that the changes have brought about a dent in the long-established Industrial Relations practices in the organization. However, the company has managed to subdue the wave of large-scale worker resentment by having built a proworker image. The changes in the Industrial Relations scenario in the company calls for a relook at new forms of relationship that thrives amid the ‘fractured’ Industrial Relations dynamics. The pandemic has placed the company on the back foot, unprecedented failures and affecting the livelihoods of employees. The shutdown of the company’s Indian wing will reduce up to 4,000 factory jobs, with over 2,600 regular employees and around 1,000 contract workers. The shutdown will also affect auxiliary companies that sell minor components and parts to Ford. Data were collected from workers, union leaders, union members, dealers, customers, and management to understand the issues faced by Ford. Indian operations were typically marginal and vulnerable to significant economic shifts; export was a face-saver. The study attempts to present the impact of the closure on the socio-economic conditions of workers. L.R.K. Krishnan, S. A Study of Employee Attitude Towards Union in Indian IT Services https://i-scholar.in/index.php/ijir/article/view/214878 In a knowledge-driven industry like IT Services where people with higher skills are expected to be better placed and treated well in their organizations, the significance of trade unions is often undermined. While the employers and IT forums and organizations of national importance have generally been averse to unionization, earlier studies revealed quite contradictory perceptions towards unionism amongst IT professionals in India. In the context of new voices of unionization emerging in the US technology sector with Google workers coming together to form a global union alliance in January 2021, this paper examines the attitude of IT professionals in India towards unionization.
