Self awareness or knowing one's emotions forms the key stone of emotional intelligence. People who excel in this are able to bounce back quickly from life's setbacks and upsets. Diagnosis of a chronic illness like diabetes is one such setback that upset the whole frame of reference of the victim. Therefore, the present investigation was aimed to find out the role of emotional intelligence in effectively coping with diabetes and evaluating quality of life. 150 female diabetic patients having type II diabetes were given the scales of emotional intelligence, coping and quality of life. The emotional intelligence was measured by the Hindi version of EI (Schutte et. al., 1998) contains two sub scales measuring ability to monitor and regulates emotion in oneself and in others. On the basis of EI scores the patients were divided into high and low EI self and High and low EI others. The ANOVA findings suggested High EI self and EI Others patients were using more active and adaptive coping strategies and less maladaptive coping strategies as compared to patients having low EI self and EI others. Both EI self and EI others have also significantly predicted physical, psychological and social quality of life. In addition, for fostering emotional intelligence a coaching schedule was introduced to low emotionally intelligent group of participants and results of pre and post coaching scores of EI indicated that for monitoring and regulation of EI self was increased. The implication of these finding for diabetic patients has been discussed.Keywords

The present investigation had explored the available social networks, congruence/discrepancies in desired and received social support in coping with stressors and health. A total of 180 married women (aged 20-60 years) residents of Gorakhpur city had participated in the study. Amongst them 90 were employed in banks, schools and railways and 90 were Homemakers. Social networks, social support, coping and health were assessed by standardized tools. The best social networks expressed by both groups of women were parents, and friends, followed by, siblings and husband. The discrepancy in desired and received social support and employment status had significant effect in applying active coping strategies, however, in the use of adaptive coping strategies both of these had interactive effect. Similarly, the physical health was affected by the interaction of employment status and discrepancy in desired and received social support, whereas, for psychological health the effect of discrepancy in social support was observed. The results were discussed in terms of their applicability to understand stress occurred in women's life and how the social support influences coping and health.Keywords

The study tried to explore role of emotional responses in marital adjustment and satisfaction in couples undergoing for infertility treatment. Using quantitative approach, 74 infertile couples (74 IVF&74 ICSI) (Total N=148) had rated their emotional responses, marital adjustment and satisfaction during infertility treatment. The findings of multiple regression analysis revealed that in IVF group and in male group of participants, particularly, positive affectivity and intensity of positive emotions and intensity of negative emotions emerged as best predictors of marital adjustment. Furthermore, positive emotion responses were emerged as best predictors for marital satisfaction in both IVF and ICSI groups. The findings are discussed in the light of the role of positive affectivity and intensity of positive emotions in stressed situation like undergoing infertility treatment.Keywords

This study examines parental factors and achievement motivation and its relation to performance of adolescents. The sample comprised of sixty students of class 1 1 th. The research is based on their expected and achieved scores of class-10. To assess achievement motivation and parental factors the questionnaires are used. Data was analyzed using two way analysis of variance and multiple regression statistical analysis. Results indicated that High performance group of students have more achievement motivation in comparison to Low performance group of students. The scores on parental factors are also high in High performance group. Amongst the four parental factors, Parental approval emerged as the most significant predictor of achievement motivation and performance followed by resources made available by parents, parental encouragement, and parental pressure. The high performance group girls are more future oriented with high level of aspiration as their expected and achieved scores are less discrepant, however, the same is not true for low performance both boys and girls. They expected more and achieved less than their expectation. These findings imply that in the order to improve children's education, parental approval warrants the future orientation.Keywords

Obesity is one of the most prevalent nutrition-related problems in western societies. Many studies indicated that obese children with body dissatisfaction had significantly lower self-esteem and high level of depressive symptoms than the obese children without body dissatisfaction and normal weight children. The obesity may have many psychological outcomes like low self-esteem, declined academic performances, etc. In India obesity is a growing problem basically in children and adolescents. The present study is planned to track the physical, psychological, social and environmental factors associated with the overweight and obesity of children and adolescents of eastern part of Uttar Pradesh and also try to focus on the parents of such children on how they contribute in their children weight gain and their awareness about the health related consequences of obesity. The preliminary interview data on 25 obese girls (aged between 13 to 18 years) suggested that all the participants were not part in extracurricular activities of school, not using exercises, yoga in their daily routine and also they were admitted that most of the day they are not taking proper breakfast. Aggression, stress and low confidence was also noticed in all the participant girls. Parents were aware of obesity and some of its unable efforts motivate their girls for proper diet and exercise. These obese girls face and teasing by their peers and siblings and this is one reason that they did not participant in social occasion's outdoor activities and parties and their problem of obesity further aggravates. The findings are throwing a light on the causes and maintaining factors of obesity as well as the psychological and social indicators of obesity and some associated factors, the parental role etc.Keywords

A major portion of life period of a person is spent in school premises. During the schooling period a student interacts with teachers and other fellow students. Hence, the present study was undertaken to explore the student's experiences, expectations and conceptualization of school teacher in their life. The data was collected from undergraduate and postgraduate students (n=70) of Department of Psychology, D.D.U. Gorakhpur University, individually. These students had written a write up on good and bad teachers in their school life with focus on their look alike, handling of classes, help or constraining in handling schooling pressure, behavior of teachers and student expectations, etc. The narrative analysis was done with focus on thematic and structural type of narrative analysis. The themes that emerged for good teacher included characteristics such as better way of teaching, no discrimination among students, disciplined class, dutiful, care and concern, person with moral values and helping nature. Characteristics of a bad teacher included themes such as insulting student in class, discrimination among students, inappropriate teaching methods, excessive expression of aggression and punishment, pessimistic and inhumane nature, and no respect for others. These findings are very pertinent in developing teacher training modules that what characteristic a student want or don't want in his/her teacher in contemporary world of information overload where the student is not looking to his/her teacher as information provider but as a motherly or fatherly figure who shape them, give emotional support in ups and downs of school pressure.Keywords
