Historical background has been given showing the advances made up to the last Hirakud Seminar. While the Roorkee Seminar refused to allocate any fund for soil conservation measures from the project estimate, the Hirakud Seminar recommended 2 to 5 per cent of the River Valley Project funds for the purpose. Grounds have been given for considering soil and water conservation as an integral and essential part of any River Valley Project. It has been shown that merely constructing dams will result in more frequent and devastating floods after some time if the forests in the catchment are not specially managed and protected. Concrete proposals have been outlined for achieving this purpose. Special attention may be given to the resolution proposed at the end of this paper.- Observations on the Durability of South Indian Timbers in Treated and Untreated Condition

Dhalbhum tract in contrast to the other portions of Singhbhum district of Chotanagpur is characterized by plane configuration of land, and red soil. Extensive waste lands are available in and outside forest demarcation. Bamboo plantation in smaller scale was tried in the fourties with very good result. With the evolution of the technique of raising large scale bamboo plantation with seeds, a target of 11,882 acres has heen kept for plantation in this tract in the 3rd Five-Year Plan. The article describes the salient features, technique and various problems of the first large scale bamboo plantation. It may be of some help in organising large scale bamboo plantation in other States.- A Note on Effect of Tsunami on Groundwater Regime in Parts of Andhra Pradesh

The reported rise of water levels in some of the wells in AP is noted days after the 26 December 2004 earthquake and the accompanied tsunami events. It is found to be due to seepage from sewerage, paddy fields, deliberate filling up of the wells, etc. Classic signature of an earthquake on water levels is missed by all the 1017 piezometers in the state. None of the piezometers show any abnormal change that coincides with the reported changes in water levels of some of the wells. Thus confirming that the earthquake (tsunami) raised false alarms about water table rise. In coastal areas, quality of the groundwater is affected due to direct inundation of the wells and percolation of sea water that inundated the lands and entered far inland through the estuaries. Keywords
