Background
Birth weight is a reliable and sensitive predictor of a newborn's chances for survival, growth and long term physical and psychosocial development. Thus knowing the magnitude and associated risk factors of low birth weight (LBW) will help in minimizing its incidence in the community.
Aims
To find out the incidence of LBW babies, its risk factors and its effects during the first year of life.
Study design
This longitudinal study was done in three subcentre areas of South India. Subjects All the 194 babies born from November 2004 to April 2005 formed the birth cohort.
Outcome measures
Weight of the newborn was recorded in the initial visit followed by monthly follow up visits to enquire about their morbidities.
Results
The incidence of LBW among 194 babies was 2.48 per 1000 live births. The risk factors significantly associated with LBW were age at first pregnancy below 19 years, less than 100 or no intake of iron and folic acid tablets (IFA) during antenatal period, birth spacing of less than 2 years between pregnancies and babies of Scheduled caste or tribe (SC/ ST) families. Incidence of episodes of all morbidities was more and that of anemia was significantly more among LBW compared to normal birth weight babies during the first year of life.
Conclusions
LBW was affected by multiple risk factors with consequent effect on occurrence of morbidities. Such factors need to be affectively controlled to improve child health and development.

Introduction: Medical equipments play a crucial role in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and disease, as well as in patient rehabilitation. Its proper functioning is important for quality healthcare delivery to patients. The evaluation of medical equipment offers management, the opportunity, to appraise the overall maintenance program and identify areas for improvement for increased efficiency and effective utilization of available resources. Method: Retro-prospective mix method study was conducted with an aim to set, capture and analyze key performance indicators for Biomedical equipment available in a tertiary care teaching hospital. These indicators were used to evaluate performance of the Biomedical equipment maintenance department, Further, the indicators were benchmarked to improve performance of the equipment. Conclusion: Delinquent work orders was identified as the most important indicator which directly impacts the organizational efficiency. By employing benchmarking activity, the vendors with frequent delinquent work orders can be identified and procurement from such vendors can be avoided in the future. A simplified operating manual with common troubleshooting problems must be made available to user departments to avoid raising of trivial complaints. This ensures efficient utilization of biomedical equipment maintenance personnel’s time in addressing complex issues which requires expertise. Such operating manuals can also be used to train junior staff and students. This is particularly helpful to the night duty staff where the engineer is available only on call. A centralized supply of lifesaving equipment such as ventilators, infusion pumps, cardiac monitors should be made available in critical care areas to ensure that there is no hindrance to patient care due to shortage of equipmentKeywords

Background: Neck circumference can be a simple screening tool for measurement of overweight and obesity. The present study aims to depict neck circumference as a valid measurement of obesity and tries to find out its correlation with BMI and waist circumference among young adults in the age group of 20-30 years.
Methodology: A community based cross-sectional study was conducted in 6 coastal villages of Udupi taluk, Udupi district, Karnataka, among 750 subjects. A pre-tested, semi structured questionnaire was administered to the study subjects after obtaining their consent. The questionnaire comprised of details on socio-demographic variables and anthropometric measurements.
Results: The study showed a strong positive correlation (r) between weight (0.7), waist circumference (0.7) and hip circumference (0.7) with neck circumference among the males, it showed a correlation of (0.6) for all the parameters like weight, waist circumference and hip circumference among the females. ROC analysis showed that the cut off for males at 36.25 cm has a sensitivity of 80% and specificity 77% and the area under the curve is 0.84. Whereas the cutoff for females was found to be 31.75 cm having the sensitivity of 69% and specificity 77% and the area under curve was 0.73.
Conclusion: Neck circumference (NC) measurement is simple and time saving screening measure that can be used to identify overweight and obesity. Patients with NC >36.25 cm cm for men and >31.75 cm for women require additional evaluation of overweight/obesity.
