Pregnancy and childbirth are the most important events of women's life. Women health and development are the indicators of National health and development. Pregnancy and childbirth are the major cause of maternal mortality and morbidity. Inadequate and inappropriate knowledge on practice of aseptic technique during delivery may have serious health consequences and significant impact on the maternal and child health. The investigators conducted a survey study to assess the knowledge on practice of aseptic technique during delivery. Investigators adopted a descriptive survey design where 60 health personnel were selected by non-probability convenient sampling technique from selected hospitals, Sikkim. Validated structured questionnaire were used to collect the data. The findings of the study reveals that knowledge regarding Bio-medical waste management(87%),definition of asepsis, aseptic technique, infection(86%), aseptic technique in labour room(77%) and asepsis in stages of labour(59%) was found to be better whereas asepsis during delivery(57%) was found to be less. There was a significant association between knowledge on practice of aseptic technique during delivery with years of experience in labour room as seen by chi square value (p<0.05). The knowledge regarding asepsis during delivery needs more emphasis, as lack of knowledge on practice of aseptic technique during delivery can increases the chances of puerperal sepsis leading to maternal death. Keywords

An elderly period is the critical period which requires special attention to adapt to the changes of life. Depressive and anxiety disorders are common among elderly people, yet these problems go undetected because they are often mistakenly considered a part of the aging process. The problems of elderly range from absence of ensured and their dependents, to ill health, absence of social security, loss of social role and recognition, and non-availability of opportunities for creative use of free time. Inadequate support from the care givers leads to lack of moral, emotional and physical support for elderly. The investigator conducted a descriptive study to explore the common mental health problems encountered by the elderly persons and the facilities provided by the family in a selected rural community of Meghalaya to identify the occurrence of common mental health problems among the elderly. Investigators adopted a descriptive survey design where 100 samples of aged 60 years and above were selected by convenient sampling technique from rural community of Bajengdoba area, Dist: East Garo Hills, Meghalaya. Data was collected with the help of Short Anxiety Screening Test, Geriatric Depression Scale and structured Interview Schedule. The finding of the study reveals that the overall prevalence of anxiety and depression was 19% and 83% respectively. The participants have reported very high physical (37%), psychological (32%) and social support (47 %) while the economic support is found to be low (49%). There was a significant association (p < 0.05) of anxiety with education level and per capita income of elderly person whereas depression was statistically associated with education, per capita income and occupation of the elderly person. Significant association was found between common mental health problems and the level of physical support, social support and economic support provided by the family for the elderly person. Anxiety and depression in elderly is a serious thing that should be the concerned of the family and society. So, more Community-Based studies should be conducted. Keywords

Persistent oblique lie is extremely rare and is frequently missed during antenatal care, despite the routine antenatal examination and obstetrics ultrasonography. An oblique lie is usually only transitory, however for either a longitudinal or transverse lie commonly result when labor supervenes. The main risk of an oblique lie is in association with preterm rupture of membranes and cord prolapsed. Abnormal lie of the fetus present the midwife with a challenge of recognition and diagnosis both in the antenatal period and during labour. The past obstetrical history and abdominal palpation may be of help. The assessment of fetal lie, position and presentation by abdominal palpation is a fundamental antenatal care skill, by which the midwife uses her hands to gently feel the position and presentation of the baby through the mother's abdomen, in order to assess which way the baby is lying in the uterus. The clinical purpose of this activity is to enable appropriate interventions to be offered and care to be planned. Here we report a rare case of persistent oblique breech with oligohydramnios and non progress of labour. This case report looks at how the art of midwifery is used as a cost effective method in screening the antenatal women at labour along with the use of sophisticated technology. Overdependence and abuse of ultrasound remains a problem and it should be emphasized that ultrasound is to complement and not a substitute to clinical judgment. The effects of ultrasound on the low-risk pregnancy need to be evaluated. The overuse of such technology can have detrimental effects, not only for the midwife but also for the woman in labour. While this technology has made a great impact in obstetric nursing. Keywords

The waste produced in the course of healthcare activities carries a higher potential for infection and injury than any other type of waste. Inadequate and inappropriate knowledge and practice of handling of healthcare waste may have serious health consequences and significant impact on the environment therefore the investigators conduct a survey study to assess the knowledge and practices of Safai Karmachari regarding biomedical waste management. Investigators adopted the descriptive co-relational design where 30 Safai Karmachari were selected by non-probability convenient sampling technique at CRH, Gangtok. Validated structured interview schedule and observational checklist were used to collect data. The findings of the study reveals that knowledge regarding the meaning (96.6%), storage (45%) and 71.6% on disposal/treatment of bio medical waste management was found to be better. Regarding practices, segregation was practiced by 16.67% whereas (93.33%) practiced transportation and there was a significant association between practice and years of experience as seen by χ2 value (p < 0.05). The importance of training regarding biomedical waste management needs emphasis, lack of proper and complete knowledge about biomedical waste management impacts practices of appropriate waste segregation. Keywords
