Abstract

Objectives: This paper first defines the concept of commercial environment design consulting and examines spatial design components. Methods/Statistical Analysis: Also, this paper reviews general design consulting processes and then analyzes the tasks and processes adopted in relatively advanced Japanese firms specializing in commercial environment design. Based on the review and analysis, this paper develops stepwise design consulting modules and defines module-specific tasks. Findings: The commercial environment design consulting significantly differs from the general product-oriented industrial design consulting. The present study proposes the consulting modules that enable customized consulting services, facilitate seamless communication between clients and consultants and improve project outcomes. A total of 22 modules comprise the minimal independent work units and the core process steps derived from the process-compliant approach to design consulting which is currently dealt with in academic and practical research, and from Japanese commercial environment design firms’ processes and application projects, given the fact that the commercial environment design has long been developing in Japan in contrast to Korea. Application/Improvements: The proposed commercial environment design consulting modules are variably applicable to projects of different scales and attributes and serve as reference data for academic research and practical application.

Abstract

Objectives: Professional consulting is highly influenced by personal capabilities of consultants rather than standardized consulting methodologies. This study aims to suggest a method of developing and designing methodologies in different situations. Methods/Statistical Analysis: After developing and applying a Rapid prototype-based consulting methodology, a survey was conducted in order to evaluate its effectiveness and based on the result of FGI (Focusing Group Interview), the effectiveness, practicality and roles of development participants were analyzed. Overall composition and goal of consulting methodology was confirmed by the firm and preliminary application was performed in the first prototype. Evaluation on the second prototype was subject to firm employees and firm experts and evaluation on the third prototype was conducted subject to firm experts. Findings: The Rapid prototype model which is a type of user based Instructional System Design (ISD) researched in educational technology was applied in consulting sites to investigate the effects. Through analysis, design, development and evaluation steps for 3 months, satisfaction and effectiveness could be increased compared to the control group. Moreover, the important fact is that satisfaction and acceptance have been improved together in the perspective of mutual application by each step through various types of communication and sharing between firms and consultants. Therefore, it could be confirmed that overall consulting quality could be improved when consulting methodology is constructed and applied with the firm instead of applying standardized consulting methodology to firms. Improvements: It was confirmed that the Rapid prototype model can be effectively applied in developing future consulting methodologies that can be applied in firms. Also, required future assignments could be deducted through empirical research. Following this, it is expected that various methodologies can be developed in the process of developing consulting methodologies in earnest based on this research.

Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to analyze the differences between successful and failed businesses, find out the factors that affect the success of start-ups and requirements for stable management of a business, and use them to make policies to support small businesses. Methods: In advance, we conducted survey 500 the success and failure. And then we collected data which extracted 345 samples that had positive answers through survey, questionnaire and interview process remove the inappropriate surveys, used a total of 124 samples in the study. Findings: Successful and failed businesses have differences in educational background, type of business, motivation, existence of representative products, existence of constant suppliers, revenue management, and training of employees, and age and educational background turned out to be influential in the possibility of success. Applications: The factors deduced through this study will be used as base data in the policy-making process for the training for start-up businesses and consulting project that are provided for small business owners by Seoul City and from Seoul City Credit.
