Abstract

Abstract

Disability of any type may restricts the functional ability, space and opportunity for complete participation in society. Despite the paradigm shift from charity to right based approach followed at present to promote the empowerment of persons with disability, a vast section of society is yet to benefit from the opportunities guaranteed under the law. There are still some significant issues common to all forms of disabilities which need to be catered too both at state and society level. This paper not only outlines general frame work on disabilities but also discusses some significant issues of concern common to all disabilities.

Abstract

The study in hand was designed to compare the multitasking performance of males groups classified as high and low on polychronicity. This was carried out for normal and emergency conditions of multitasking. Multitasking has been identified as a behavior involving frequent switching between tasks over time (Waller, 2007). Polychronicity is understood as a preference for organizing activities over time. For the above purpose, the sample of 180 young adult females with mean age of 21 yrs was taken up from the tricity of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. 'Index of Polychronic Values Scale' by Bluedorn et al. (1999) and a self developed simulated task for multitasking was used for the study. t- ratios were computed to arrive at the results. Results showed that high polychronic subjects showed better performance as compared to low polychronic subjects across both levels multitasking.

Abstract

Abstract

Adjustment is a lifelong and a dynamic process which is also described as an interaction between individuals with the environment they live in. It includes the behavior's that allow people to meet the demands of the environment Adjustment means suitable adaptation of human beings to the demands of their day-to-day life. Adolescence is a turbulent phase of life with disagreements and mood swings which may be related to the issue of not being able to fall in the adult age group or an impulse to experience adventure. Adolescents, who have strong emotional ties with their families, are aware of the presence of their families who can support them at all times, are affected lesser by the problems. This results in a feeling of security and thus reduces their concerns related to life. However the adolescents who are deprived of family environment, may experience various concerns and fears, and even their self concept may be affected adversely. Thus the adjustment among the school going adolescents living with families and the ones living in orphanages may vary. A total of 60 school going adolescents i.e thirty each from the ones living with families and orphanages were taken up as a sample for this study. In each group there were fifteen adolescent girls and fifteen adolescent boys. This paper outlines the social, emotional and educational adjustment among the school going adolescents with families and orphanages. It also explore the gender differences in the social, emotional and educational adjustments in the two groups. The data was analyzed using both descriptive (means and standard deviation) and inherency method (t-tests). The results showed that there were significant differences in the social and educational adjustment of adolescent girls living with families and orphanages. Significant gender differences were found in social and educational adjustment among only the adolescents living with families.

Abstract

Intellectual disability is characterized by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning and in the adaptive behavior. It is a condition in which social, practical and adaptive skills are affected. Special Olympics empower athletes with intellectual disabilities and also provide them with the opportunities to learn skills that go beyond the play grounds. Special Olympics deliver opportunities for competition in a variety of sports throughout the year. The paper outlines the level and events of participation. The social and physical changes in the children with intellectual disability due to participation in Special Olympics and the problems faced by the mothers due to the participation of their children Out of the total twenty seven mothers, all the twenty one mothers whose children participated in Special Olympics were selected. Around 77.77% of the children with intellectual disability participated in Special Olympics. Majority (85.71%) of them participated at state level Olympics. More than half (52.38%) of the children participated in athletics whereas 28.57% participated in Bocce. Improvement in the self esteem and wider friends circle of their child with disability due to participation in Special Olympics were observed by 23.80% each, of the mothers of children with intellectual disability. Around 28.57% each of the mothers saw physical changes such as enhancement in daily exercise and improvement of health in their children with disability. Some of the mothers also shared the problems faced by them. More than 42.85% of the mothers felt they were not able to give enough quality time to the siblings of the child with intellectual disability.

Abstract

Adjustment is a continuous process by which a person varies his behavior to produce a more harmonious relationship between himself and his environment. It helps to keep balance between one's need and capacity to meet the needs. Adjustment is a major concern at all life stages, especially during adolescence. Since it is a phase of rapid growth and development during which physical, sexual and emotional changes occur, adjustment problems are at their peak. Most adolescents experience adjustment difficulties in emotional, social and/or educational aspects of their lives. School adjustment can be viewed as comprising academic, social and emotional adjustment .It is a continuous process that is geared towards the adaptation of the individual to school life and culture. Overall adjustment plays a vital role in the development of child. The sample of 30 adolescents aged 14-18 years were taken up from the Senior Secondary School in this study. In each group, there were fifteen adolescent girls and fifteen adolescent boys. School Adjustment Inventory for school students developed by Sinha and Singh has been used in the study. The present study aims to examine the gender difference in social, educational and emotional adjustment among the school going adolescents. The findings of the present study indicate that there exist significant differences between the secondary school students when compared on the basis of gender.

Abstract

Intellectual disability is characterized by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning and in the adaptive behavior. Caregivers of children with intellectual disability often undergo a lot of stress and health issues. Since mothers are the primary caregivers of the children, they are often weighed down by various issues. Adequate support can create resiliency in them. The paper outlines the level of care giver burden, general health and stress resiliency of the mothers of children with intellectual disability. A total 27 mothers of children with intellectual disability were taken up as a sample for this study. Caregiver Burden Scale, General Health Questionnaire and Stress Resiliency Profile were used to assess the caregiver burden, health issues and stress resiliency among the mothers of children with intellectual disability. The data was analyzed using frequency method. The results on care giving burden among the mothers of children with intellectual disability indicated that more than half (59.26%) of the mothers reported mild to moderate burden, around 29.63 % showed symptoms of moderate to severe burden and very few (11.11%) reported of little or no burden. The scores of general health of the mothers showed that majority ( 88.89%)of mothers reported social dysfunction and half (59.26%) of them showed symptoms of anxiety/insomnia and around 29.63% stated to have somatic symptoms. The results on stress resiliency profile showed that the percentage of mothers who were in the stress resilient category included 33.33% deficiency focusing, 22.22 % necessitating, 44.44% skill recognition. Similarly the ones who were close to average use of each habit were 44.44 % who reported of deficiency focusing, 37.04 % necessitating and 37.04 % of skill recognition. The mothers who were in the stress predisposing category included 33.33 % were the ones who reported of using deficiency focusing, 29.63 % necessitating and 18.52 % of skill recognition.

Abstract

In this paper, a new method of inspecting pharmaceutical capsules aesthetic defects is proposed using color image processing. After an image is taken, median filtering is performed. Then the region based statistics is calculated to acquire the largest area of pharmaceutical capsule from the image. After that RGB image is transferred into R plane, G plane and B plane. Then histogram of each plane is calculated. Further by setting thresholding value of each plane, mask of each plane is determined. Color segmentation of image is achieved by combining mask of each plane. Experiments are conducted with the quality inspection of pharmaceutical capsules. Time is also taken as major parameter of the system. Experiment results show the reliability and feasibility of proposed method as time and quality control are two main parameters in industry. The proposed paper present an application to detect defect related to color of pharmaceutical capsules which can be adapted to other practical applications for automated visual inspection using image processing techniques.

Abstract

Intellectual disability is the contemporary term that describes the phenomenon known as learning disabilities , mental retardation , mental handicap, sub normality . Presence of an intellectually disabled child in the family, at times gives rise to disequilibrium ,which is eventually followed by adjustment to life with or without any undue stress. These stresses emerge and reemerge during the upbringing of the child and in the long run may also result in resentment due inability to change the situation. One time support does not relieve the parents from the problems emerging on daily basis .Families are thus required to be resilient in order to cater to the demands and the pressures coming up during the process of upbringing of their child .Having high level of resilience can help the parents to sail through the uneven path and adapt to new conditions. This paper outlines the parental issues related to the child with intellectual disability and the role of family resilience.

Abstract

Significant limitations in intellectual functioning and also in adaptive behavior consisting of many daily social and practical skills, fall under, the definition of intellectual disability. It normally starts off before the age of 18. Impact of which can be seen not only on the person concerned but also on the family as a whole too. There exists a body of literature that not only explores the abilities and identifies several perspectives emerging from experiences of families of persons with intellectual disability and but also throw light on obstructions faced by them at various stages of development. The author in this paper has reviewed the literature related to issues pertaining to reactions and responses of the families to the challenges that arise due to the birth and upbringing of the child with intellectual disability.

Abstract

School adjustment includes academic, social and emotional adjustment. It is viewed as the process that the students adopt to maintain balance between their academic, social and emotional needs within the school environment. Though adjustment is a major concern at all stages of life, it becomes critical during adolescence. Adolescent who have strong emotional ties with their families, are aware of the presence of their families who can support them at all times. They are thus affected lesser by any problems, giving them a feeling of security and thus reducing the issues of concern at this stage of their life. However, the adolescents who are deprived of family environment may experience various concerns and fears or show low adjustment levels, high emotional problems, difficulty in social interactions and many other indicators of maladjustment and poor well being. Similarly, the adjustment among the school going adolescent girls living with their families and in orphanages may significantly vary. The present study aims to examine the social, educational and emotional adjustment among the school going adolescent girls residing in orphanages and with their families. The sample comprises of thirty school going adolescent girls aged between 14-18 years residing in orphanages and the ones living with their families. In each group, there are fifteen adolescent girls. Adjustment Inventory for school students developed by Sinha and Singh has been used in the study. The result of the present study indicates that the adolescent girls living in orphanages have lower social and educational adjustment level as compared to the girls who live along with their families. The emotional adjustment level of the adolescent girls living in orphanages and families are almost same.

Abstract

The present investigation was conducted to know the relationship among extroversion, life fulfilment and subjective well being. A similar investigation has likewise been done between among female understudies as for their life fulfilment, subjective prosperity and extroversion. Unmistakable strategy was utilized as a part of the present examination to acquire the correlated and exact data. The example of the examination was 200 college understudies between the age gatherings of 18-25 yrs. advantageous inspecting strategy was utilized by the scientist for picking the example from Lovely Professional University, Phagwara. The goal of the examination was to consider the connection between life fulfilment and subjective prosperity of among female understudies. Three standardized scale was used for this study. 60-Item life satisfaction scale by e.g., Alam Rama Srivastava (1985). Subjective well-being by Ryffs (PWS) (1999) and Extroversion Scale by Big five personality test retrieved from ipip.ori.org, was used by researcher for data collection. The investigator used quantitative Technique-Pearson correlation, t-test and regression for data analysis and forgetting the result. The findings of the study reveal that life satisfaction and extroversion is highly correlated among female students.
