Abstract

The present paper provides botanical description, phenology, vernacular names, ecology and distribution along with less known edible, medicinal and other uses of Indigofera cassioides Rottler ex DC. in different parts of India on the basis of field and literature study. This paper also provides method of cultivation of the plant in the waste/barren land as a subsidiary food crop and for the economic benefits of the tribal people.

Abstract

The communication deals with taxonomy, vernacular names, botanical description, distribution, habitat and chromosome number along with economic uses viz. edible, medicinal, ethnomedicinal, poisonous, timber, wood, dye, fuel, fodder, incense, etc. of Taxus wallichiana Zucc. in India. An effort has also been made to describe the chemical constituents, present status, threats, propagation, conservation and management of this rare species in detail.

Abstract

The present paper enumerates ethnomedicinal uses of 68 plant species belonging to 63 genera and 40 families, collected from Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Anugul and Balangir districts of Odisha that have not been reported earlier.

Abstract

The chromosome numbers of the extant and extinct plants play a significant role in determining the phylogenetic interrelation of different groups. In the post Angiosperm Phylogeny Group system of plant classification era more and more attentions were given in molecular based studies, evidences on plant breeding, intraspecific variation, origin and taxonomic relationship studies of diverse plant group. Exhaustive online database on chromosomal counts have already been developed from various sources. Still, there are many species and genera of plants for which no chromosome count is known. There are countries from which very few counts have been reported. Therefore, there is still a great deal of traditional cytotaxonomic work to be done. The present communication presents 519 records belonging to 343 species, 265 genera and 85 families of Angiosperms of Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah. The paper also reports 60 plant species with new chromosome counts, which were hitherto not reported either in the Chromosome Counts Database (CCDB) or Chromosome Atlas of Flowering Plants of the Indian Subcontinent.

Abstract

Human beings have been utilizing plants and plant products in various forms for their survival since time immemorial. The traditional and indigenous relationship between people with their ambient vegetation broadly termed as ‘Ethnobotany’, a dynamic science with tremendous potential for future. The rural and ethnic people of India possess a vast knowledge of traditional uses of plants for various ailments they suffers from. However, due to depleting interest of the newer generation on traditional healthcare system and rapid urbanization, these traditional knowledge continuing with the words of mouth rapidly disappearing. In last five decades, efforts were made by various dedicated ethno botanists to document the century old practices from different parts of our country.
