The prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STDs) is rising all over the world and also in India. Due to the possible serious consequences in a substantial proportion like infertility, pelvic inflammation or life threatening diseases like ectopic gestation or cancer, it is necessary to diagnose these early and treat them adequately. Despite the agreement in all health personnel that prevention is better than cure, the STDs continue to affect a significant number of persons including young adolescents. This is disastrous in an era when anti-microbial resistance is a humongous challenge. It is therefore necessary that all physicians, whether specialists or not, become aware of the extent of prevalence, causes and methods of diagnosis of STDs so that early treatment can prevent complications. The purpose of this article is to describe the ravages of STDs in Indian adolescents, causes and to facilitate diagnosis of STDs so that the adolescent population is protected from consequences. Once detected the management can follow national and international guidelines for treatment keeping in mind counselling and prevention of spread, and prevention of complications in the youth.References

Endometrial carcinoma is less common than cervical cancer but the disadvantage is that there is no mass screen-ing method that can be used for early detection or prevention. The Papanicolaou (Pap) smear is useful for screening and preventing cervical cancer but occasionally also detects endometrial cancer, usually in advanced stages. Here we describe a case of endometrial cancer which was not detected in the initial Pap smear of a 40 year old woman. She had Low-Grade Intraepithelial Squamous Lesion (LSIL) with normal endocervical cells in the initial smear. Since she participated in a cervical cancer prevention study with antimicrobials and turmeric extract, her Pap smear was repeated within 5 weeks. Endometrial adenocarcinoma was clearly suspected in this follow-up Pap smear and the case was subsequently investigated and confirmed as Endometrial carcinoma. This case is presented for its rarity of clinical features: younger age, absence of common risk factors, and early detection because of cervical cancer prevention programs. A review of the literature reveals the potential of curcumin and turmeric extracts in controlling gynaecological cancers. Keywords

The persistent high prevalence of anemia in the Indian population is likely to be a major health hazard. Since mild or moderate anemia is often undetected or uncared for, it results in an imperceptible or unrecognized poor quality of life. It increases the risk to health and to life in many cases. This short review is meant to highlight the unsuspected prevalence, and unperceived effects of anemia in the life of millions of Indians. The national health programs cannot succeed to the desired extent unless healthcare providers understand the nature of anemia and the role of iron supplements. This write up is meant to implore all the healthcare givers and the society at large to relook into the health of the community after relinquishing the lower standards of hemoglobin, and to highlight the importance of being watchful for anemia as an associated or primary cause of illness, a multifactorial malady and to start investigating and treating it with due zeal that the Indian population deserves. We hope that with renewed enthusiasm for detection and management of anemia, the health and performance indicators of India will show a respectable increase. The health of a nation is its wealth! Keywords
