- Studies on the Ameliorative Potential of Aqueous Extract of Bark of Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb in Streptozotocin - Induced Diabetic Rats

A study was planned to evaluate the ameliorative potential of aqueous extract of bark of Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb (PM) in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. The effect of oral administration of plant extract on serum electrolytes, serum glycolytic enzymes, liver microsomal protein, hepatic cytochrome P-450 dependent monooxygenase enzymes and lipid peroxidation of the liver and kidney of streptozoticin - induced diabetic rats was studied. Administration of the bark extract to diabetic rats restored the levels of serum electrolytes, glycolytic enzymes and hepatic cytochrome P-450 dependent enzyme systems by preventing the formation of liver and kidney lipid peroxides at the end of study period of 12 weeks. Further, the bark extract at the dosage of 500mg/kg/ day exhibits a significant ameliorative activity as evidenced by the histological studies in normal and PM treated STZ - induced diabetic rats. On the basis of our findings, it could be used as an effective ameliorative agent for the management of diabetes and associated metabolic alterations.Keywords

The removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution using sulphonated black rice husk ash (SBRHA) and sulphonated white rice husk ash (SWRHA) at various pH and adsorbent doses has been studied. The uptake percentage of Cr(VI) from the solution was determined spectrophotometrically by DPC method. It was found that the amount of Cr(VI) adsorbed increases significantly with decrease in pH from 5.0 to 1.0 for SWRHA and 5.0 to 2.0 for SBRHA. The Cr(VI) adsorption increased significantly with increasing dose of the adsorbent.Keywords

Background: Now a day, data communication plays a vital role in day-to-day life. There is a strong desire to develop and implement more secure authentication protocol to protect secret information against security threats. Method: The paper proposes a Quick Response (QR) code Authentication Protocol (QRAP) using Visual Cryptography. Visual Cryptography (VC) is a model of cryptography split the secret into share images, which prevents the secret image from being altered by using the concepts of the cipher and can reconstruct the secret image by stacking the legitimate share images. Findings: The passwords for authentication are encoded as QR-codes and later encrypted into colour share images. Thus, the colour share images by itself convey no information, but when the shares are combined, the secret password can be revealed. The necessary is that the user needs to handle a device containing a QR-code reader, most probably a Smartphone. The experimental result shows that the proposed QRAP scheme provides secure data communication with less computational complexity. Applications/Improvement: This research work can give a way for providing authentication to all services which are related to electronic devices.Keywords

Pomegranate genotypes have been characterized mainly on the basis of morphological traits; but, these traits are affected to a large extent by environmental and cultivation conditions, resulting in their ambiguous discrimination. Molecular markers are more suited for accurate discrimination of genotypes and cultivars. Sequence-Related Amplified Polymorphism (SRAP) markers were used in the present study to analyze polymorphism among the important pomegranate genotypes grown in India. The total number of bands generated by 30 SRAP primers for 12 genotypes was 1448, with an average of 48.3 bands per primer. Polymorphism varied from 2.7 to 73.9, with an average of 40.95%. Similarity-value based on Jaccard's Coefficient ranged from 0.63 (between cvs. Naina and Amlidana) to 0.95 (between cvs. Kabul Yellow and Jalore Seedless). UPGMA (un-weighted pair group method with arithmetic mean) analysis was performed and a dendrogram was constructed using Jaccard's similarity matrix. The 12 genotypes used grouped into 5 clusters. SRAP markers were found suitable for determining variability among the pomegranate genotypes studied.Keywords

Background: Odontogenic cysts are unique in a way that they only affect the oral and maxillofacial region. The Odontogenic cysts arise from the epithelial components of the odontogenic apparatus or its remnants that lie entrapped within bone or in the gingival tissue. Even though the prognosis of the lesion is excellent, there are possibilities that the cyst may undergo a neoplastic change or may affect occlusion and eruption. It is important to determine the prevalence pattern of odontogenic cysts for proper management.
Aim: To determine the prevalence pattern of odontogenic cysts and its clinico-pathological correlation and to compare the results with the findings in the literature.
Methodology: This retrospective study included reports of 163 histopathologically diagnosed cases of odontogenic cysts from the year 2004. Clinical history and relevant data were recorded. The cases were analyzed for type of cyst, age, sex and anatomical site.
Results: The most frequent type of odontogenic cyst was periapical cyst (38.03%), followed by odontogenic keratocyst (35.6%), dentigerous cyst (10.4%), residual cyst (8.5%), orthokeratinised odontogenic cyst (4.2%), glandular odontogenic cyst (2.45%) and lateral periodontal cyst (0.6%). The most prevalent age group was 21-30 years except for residual cyst which was 31-40 years and lateral periodontal cyst which was 61-70 years. The most prevalent gender was male for all the odontogenic cysts. The most common anatomic site of the cysts was posterior mandible except for dentigerous cyst, periapical cyst and lateral periodontal cyst.

Garmenting is one of the many labour intensive sector that provides gateway for developing countries in entering into the global market. Southern production centres employ more than 80% women as part of their workforce. Working for a long period of time without rest, absence of personal protective equipment and inadequate provision of ergonomic facilities at workplace leads to discomfort and fatigue.
Method and Method: 150 female workers with common musculoskeletal problems and working at the selected garment manufacturing factories and fulfilling the selection criteria will be randomly assigned to experimental and control group. The work site health intervention will be provided to experimental group, which involves 3 sessions for a week namely orientation to body mechanics, demonstration on neck and lower back exercise and nutritional education. After the demonstration, the female worker will be instructed to perform the exercise, 5 times in a week for 2 week in the workplace and thereafter for at least 3 times in a week for a month in the home. The outcome will be assessed at end of the 2nd week and 5th week. The control group who will not receive any intervention. The data will be analysed by frequency, percentage distribution, mean and standard deviation. Chi-square test and independent t-test will be used to assess the difference in various parameters.
Discussion: The result of the study may help to guide the garment workers to initiate the simple intervention in the worksite and would also reduce the occurrence of the common musculoskeletal problems.
