Abstract

Concentrations of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe and Ni) were determined in the fruit bodies of ten edible mushrooms collected from two different areas (roadside and forest areas) of Nayagram Block of Midnapore District, West Bengal. The analyses were performed using Atomic Absorbtion Spectrophotometer. In the mushrooms, the highest metal concentrations were measured as 4.7, 0.84, 59.0, 135.0, 37.0, 1438.0 and 8.6 mg/kg (dry weight basis) for Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe and Ni in Coprinus micaceus, Coprinus micaceus, Lycoperdon pyriforme, Leucocoprinus cepaestipes, Canstharellus cibarius and Macrolepiota procera respectively. The results indicated that the levels of some detrimental heavy metals viz. cadmium and lead were high in some wild edible species viz. Coprinus micaceus, Coprinus comatus and Macrolepiota procera. Therefore, it is wise to restrict the consumption of these mushrooms collected from roadside area of the study region.

Abstract

An exploration was undertaken for identification of medicinal plants frequently used by the forest fringe people of Nayagram Range under Midnapore West Forest Division of South West Bengal. A total of 75 species having medicinal value could be identified and presented along with their identifying characters like botanical name, local name, family, plant type etc. and uses of the plant components against different diseases. The species diversity in medicinal plants belongs to 34 dicotyledonous plant families and 4 monocotyledonous families. In dicotyledons, the maximum number of genera belong to the family Fabaceae and the maximum number of species belong to the genus Terminalia. In monocotyledons, the family Liliaceae is represcnted by a maximum number of genera. The medicinal utility of the plant species has also been highlighted.

Abstract

Wild mushrooms are important Non-Wood Forest Products (NWFP) from the forests and are being used as food since prehistoric times. About 280 species of edible mushrooms are available in the forests of India. Such mushrooms are protein rich and some of them are mycorrhizal, found on trees, while others are non-mycorrhizal. In Himachal Pradesh, about 70 edible mushrooms belonging to different species have been identified. Important species have been briefly described, indicating regions where these are found. Very few of these wild edible mushrooms have been commercially exploited. A good many of these can be collected and consumed as vegetables. They form part of the diet of the local tribal people but are generally neglected in urban civilized society owing to ignorance of their food value and panic about poisonous effects. Awareness about their food value should be created as these are quite tasty. On the other hand, popularized flowers mushroom packing has reduced their number and. Careful study of this effect is needed. Efforts should also be made to maintain their genetic variability in their natural habitat.

Abstract

Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) constitute an important source of food for economically backward communities living in the forests of the Nayagram Range of West Midnapore Forest Division , South-West Bengal. Items collected for household consumption include leaves and young shoots , flowers , fruits , tubers , mushrooms etc. The average annual collection was found to be highest for Mahua flowers followed by tubers , leafy vegetables , mushrooms and fruits. The consumption pattern of forest edibles varied widely over the FPCs studied. The present study on nutritional aspect confirms the presence of major nutritive elements in forest edibles in appreciable amount. Therefore , NTFPs have immense prospects to provide solution to the problems of hunger , malnutrition and poverty of the rural poor in the world.

Abstract

This study described the removal of Ag(I) from wastewater using macrofungus Pleurotus platypus in a packed bed column. The effect of operating parameters such as bed height, flow rate and initial metal concentration were investigated on removal of Ag(I) under optimized condition. The breakthrough curve profile signified that the breakthrough time and exhaustion time increased with an increase in bed height and a decrease in flow rate and initial metal concentration. The data were supported by 3D mesh diagrams and perturbation plots obtained from 2D factorial design. The column data were analysed using four models viz., BDST model, Emperical model, Thomas model and Yan model. The BDST model was found to be the best to fit the breakthrough curves at experimental conditions. The column was regenerated using 0.01 M HCl solution and sorption-desorption studies were carried out for three cycles. The obtained results implied that P. platypus may serve as suitable adsorbent material for the removal of Ag(I) from wastewater.

Abstract

In the present study, the dead biomass of the two yeast species viz., Candida rugosa and Cryptococcus laurentii were subjected to various chemical treatments to assess the effects of pretreatment on zinc(II) removal from aqueous solution. Yeast biomass was pretreated with anionic surfactants viz., sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate (SDBS) and dioctyl sulphosuccinate sodium (DSS), alkali (sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate), acids (hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid and acetic acid), and organic solvents viz., methanol, formaldehyde and gluteraldehyde. Pretreatment of dead yeast biomass with anionic surfactants was found to improve the zinc(II) removal remarkably compared to all other treatments. Acid treatments resulted in significant reduction in zinc(II) removal efficiency. The pattern of zinc(II) removal efficiency of both the yeast species was found to follow the order: SDS (3 mM) > SDBS (3 mM) > DSS (3mM) > Na₂CO₃ (9 mM) ≥ NaOH (9 mM) ≥ untreated biomass > C₂H₅O₈ (7 mM) ≥ NaHCO₃ (9 mM) > CH₃OH (7 mM) > HCHO (7 mM) > CH₃COOH (5 mM) > HCl (5mM) > H₂SO₄ (5 mM). Maximum zinc(II) removal was noted in case of SDS treated C. rugosa and C. laurentii which exhibited 84.7 % and 74.5 % zinc(II) removal compared to the removal efficiency of 65.4 % and 54.8 % obtained by untreated C. rugosa and C. laurentii.

Abstract

The aim of this work was to ascertain the efficacy of immobilised yeast for the remediation of caffeine in soil under laboratory condition. Biostimulation with inorganic nutrients and bioaugmentation with caffeine utilizing single and mixed yeast cultures viz., Mixed culture 1, Mixed culture 2, Mixed culture 3 and Mixed culture 4 were employed as remedial options for the removal of caffeine from contaminated soil. To promote caffeine removal, biowaste materials (wheat bran, sawdust, peanut hull powder) were used as biocarriers for immobilization of caffeine degrading yeast species following the method of physical adsorption. We constructed laboratory biopiles to compare the treatment bioaugmentation with bioaugmentation combined biostimulation using single and mixed cultures of immobilized yeast. Maximum removal of caffeine was found to be 98.3 % after 24 days in the biostimulated soil which was bioaugmented with sawdust immobilized yeast mixed culture No. 4 consisting of three yeast species viz., Trichosporon asahii, Candida tropicalis and Candida inconspicua. Dehydrogenase activity in the soil was remarkably enhanced to 639 μg TPF g^-1 soil and microbial numbers were also increased for the soil treated under the same conditions described above. Phytotoxicity assay confirmed the reduction of caffeine toxicity in the contaminated soil after treatment. Thus, sawdust immobilized mixed yeast culture No. 4 could serve as potential tool for the remediation of caffeine from contaminated soil.

Abstract

Lead, like other heavy metals, is introduced into natural waters by industrial and domestic wastewater discharges causing environmental pollution. Conventional methods are extremely expensive or inefficient for removal of metals from wastewaters containing low concentration of dissolved metals. Biosorption is a process in which sorbents of biological sources are employed for binding heavy metals. It is a promising alternative to treat industrial effluents, mainly because of its low cost and high metal binding capacity. In the present work, lead (II) biosorption process by the fruiting bodies of a macrofungus (Agaricus bisporus) has been studied. The work considered the determination of lead-biomass equilibrium data in batch system. The studies were carried out in order to determine some operational parameters of lead sorption such as the effects of pH, initial metal ion concentration, biomass dosage and time required for the metal biosorbent equilibrium, contact period, etc. All the parameters showed important effect on biosorption rate and capacity.

Abstract

The present study has been undertaken to evaluate performance efficiency of the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) at Vaniyambadi, Vellore. Waste water samples were collected at four different stages of the treatment units and analysed for various physico-chemical parameters such as pH, temperature, turbidity, EC, TSS, TDS, BOD, COD and heavy metals. The values obtained for different parameters were compared with standard values given by National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) for waste water quality. The CETP has been working with the norms of NEQS and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) and meeting the standard discharge limits.

Abstract

Studies have shown that fungal organisms possess the capacity of heavy metal removal. In the present investigation, a study in batch system was conducted using the macrofungus, Agaricus bisporus as biosorbent for evaluating its potentiality to adsorb lead (II) ions from aqueous solution. To improve the bioadsorption capacity, the biosorbent was pretreated with NaOH, Na₂CO₃ and NaHCO₃. Pretreatment with NaOH resulted in a significant improvement in bioadsorption capacity. The experimental equilibrium data were adjusted by adsorption isotherms from Langmuir and Freundlich models and their equilibrium parameters were determined. For the untreated biosobent, the Langmuir model supplied q_max = 28.8 mg/g and b = 0.02 L/mg and for the Freundlich model parameters are K_f= 1.7 and n =1.8. For the sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treated biomass, the parameters were q_max = 34.6 mg/g, b= 0.08 L/mg, K_f = 5.3 and n = 2.3. The best adjusted model to the experimental equilibrium data for both untreated and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treated biosorbent was the Langmuir model.

Abstract

The present investigation is focused on the removal of Ni(II) ions from aqueous environment using gum (GA) based and clay (MMT) based nanobiocomposite beads composed of CuO NPs and chitosan (Ch). The potential of beads was exploited in terms of pH (2.0-10.0), contact time (2-36 h), temperature (10-50 °C), initial metal concentration (100-1200 mg L^-1) and adsorbent dosage (1.0-6.0 g L^-1) during the adsorption process. Under optimized condition, maximum Ni(II) removal (95.05%) was exhibited by clay based nanobiocomposite (CuO-Ch-MMT) beads followed by gum based nanobiocomposite (CuO-Ch-GA) beads (90.12%). Equilibrium data showed the best fit to Langmuir model with the highest adsorption capacity suggesting a homogeneous mode of Ni(II) adsorption onto the nanobiocomposite beads. Kinetic studies showed better applicability of pseudo-first order model suggesting physisorption as the underlying phenomena. Thermodynamic studies showed that the process was endothermic and spontaneous. The adsorption mechanism of CuO-Ch-GA and CuO-Ch-MMT beads was further elucidated using SEM, EDX and FT-IR analyses. Ex-situ studies showed a maximum Ni(II) removal of 88.26% from electroplating wastewater using CuO-Ch-MMT beads in column mode. Regeneration studies suggested that CuO-Ch-MMT beads could be consistently reused up to 4 cycles.

Abstract

The present investigation is focused on the application of bimetallic zinc-silver (Zn-Ag) nanoparticles embedded in montmorillonite (MMT)-polysaccharide (chitosan-Ch and gum ghatti-Gg) nanobiocomposites for the removal of dichlorvos (DCV) from aqueous solution. Operating parameters viz., pH (4.0-11.0), contact time (30-360 min), temperature (20-50°C), initial DCV concentration (20-140 mg/L), composite dosage (0.2-1.2 g/L) were optimized. Zn-Ag/MMT/Ch nanobiocomposite showed the maximum removal of DCV (96.6 %) followed by Zn-Ag/MMT/Gg (85.3 %) nanobiocomposite and Zn-Ag/MMT (64.3 %) nanocomposite. The process followed a heterogenous mode of DCV adsorption by all the composites. The kinetic studies indicated that the DCV adsorption followed pseudo-first order model. Intraparticle diffusion and Boyd plot suggested that the film diffusion was not the sole rate limiting step. The thermodynamic parameters indicated the feasibility and exothermic nature of DCV adsorption. The mechanism of adsorption process was further elucidated by FT-IR, AFM and EDX analysis. Packed bed column studies showed the removal of DCV up to 79.3 % using Zn- Ag/MMT/Ch under 12 cm bed height, 1 ml/min of flow rate and at 0 % dilution. Regeneration studies suggested that the Zn-Ag/MMT/Ch could be reused up to three cycles.

Abstract

In the present study, ten yeasts were isolated from fruit juices and subjected to in vitro tests for screening probiotic potentiality. Three isolates exhibited higher tolerance for pH and heat stress. Based on preliminary screening, isolates were subjected to molecular identification and identified as Wickerhamomyces anomalusVITASN01, Saccharomyces cerevisiae VIT- ASN03 and Yarrowia lipolytica VIT- ASN04. The screened yeast isolates survived and grew well at human gastrointestinal conditions in pH 2.5 and 0.3% (w/v) oxgall at 37°C. The antagonistic activity of yeast isolates were tested against clinical pathogens, viz.S. typhii, B. subtilis and E. coli. W. anomalusVIT-ASN01 showed maximum tolerance to high bile salt concentration and acidity, could remove cholesterol 51.28% during 48 h and produced 586.55 mg/L of exopolysaccharide. It can be concluded that the screened novel yeast isolates can serve as promising probiotics in various fields of food industry.

Abstract

The present study investigates the role of yeasts, isolated from different environments for its abilities to synthesize biodegradable polymer, Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and its copolymers. Serial dilution method and spread plate technique had been used for the isolation of yeasts from different samples. Screening had been done by crotonic assay followed by UV Spectrophotometric analysis. Growth parameters such as effect of carbon sources, incubation period, inoculum percentage, incubation temperature and pH of the production medium were optimized for each of the screened isolates. Characterization of PHA was done by FTIR and GCMS analysis. Maximum PHA produced was observed after 96 hours of incubation period inoculated with 2% (v/v) of inoculum in minimal media of pH 8 containing various carbon sources viz. 5% sucrose for Isolate1; 5% glucose for Isolate 2; 3% starch for Isolate 3 and 5% Lactose for Isolate 4. Incubation temperature was maintained at 37°C. Maximum PHA production was noted as 40 % in Isolate 1, 33% in Isolate 2, 29% in Isolate 3and 25% in Isolate 4 respectively on the basis of dry cell weight under optimized condition. Prominent peaks obtained through FTIR analysis at wavelength 3273, 2922, 1739 and 1462 cm ^-1 showed the presence of stretching bands of -OH-,-CH-, -C=O- and -CH₃- group which are the characteristic peaks of PHA polymer. GC-MS chromatogram detected the peaks at retention time 3.063 and 19.25 min were corresponding to the derivatized products of butanoic acid (polyhydroxybutyrate) and octadecanoic acid (polyhydroxyoctadecanoate).The present study demonstrated that yeast Isolate 1 could produce high amount of PHA (40% on dry cell weight basis ) with hydroxybutyrate (HB) and hydroxyoctadecanoate (HOD) as its main constituents.

Abstract

The present study had investigated the role of yeasts, isolated from soil and food samples for its ability to synthesize silver nanoparticles. Serial dilution method followed by spread plate technique was used for isolation of yeasts on YEPD agar medium and the morphological characterization was done by simple staining technique. Primary screening was done by visual colour change followed by UV spectrophotometric analysis. Significant color change and prominent peaks around 420-450 nm were noted through UV spectrophotometric analysis in the cell free extract of Isolate 5, Isolate 8 and Isolate 13, revealed the synthesis of Ag-NPs. Optimization of growth parameters for the enhancement of Ag-NPs production was evaluated for each of the potent yeast isolates. Isolate 5 and 13 had showed highest Ag-NPs production after 24 h of incubation period, supplemented by fructose in the production medium of pH 9 along with 5mM substrate concentration of AgNO₃, at 45˚C, whereas in case of isolate 8, highest production was observed with 3mM concentration of Ag NO₃ at pH 8. FTIR analysis revealed the presence of significant peaks around 3441-3255, 2922-2964, 1576-1579, 1384-1415, 1276, 1153 and 1076cm^-1 of Ag-NPs synthesized by isolate 5,8 and 13 respectively, were corresponding to the functional groups produced during the synthesis of Ag-NPs. XRD results showed peaks at 2 theta values 27.29°, 31.76°, 45.91°, 54.26-56.77° and 75.56-75.99°, were corresponding to (111), (200), (222), (311), and (331) lattice of silver nanoparticles. Distinct surface topology of the AgNPs synthesised by the potent yeast isolates were observed by AFM analysis. Positive anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial activity were elucidated by AgNPs synthesised by the potent yeast isolates, wherein AgNPs were found to be bacteriostatic at low concentration (5ug/ml) and bactericidal at high concentrations (100ug/ml).

Abstract

The present study is focused on the utilization of floral wastes for the extraction of natural colorants. Waste flowers were collected from various sites of temples, garden, domestic and decorative areas and identified as Rosahybrid, Tageteserecta, Spathodeacampanulata, Bougainvilleaglabra, and Euphorbiamili. Identification and characterization of extracted colorants was done using thin layer chromatography (TLC), UV Spectroscopy andFourier Transform Infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis. Antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of extracted natural colorants were evaluated. Applicability of extracted colorants as natural dye and biofertilizer was also evaluated. It can be concluded that the natural colorants extracted from the floral wastes can be used in textile and pharmaceutical industries.In addition, contamination free natural colorants can also serve as safe biofertilizer.

Abstract

The application of bioflocculants has recently become a promising solution for the treatment of water and wastewater as well as removal of pollutants from environment. Water pollution is the most challenging environmental issue in the developing countries to determine the quality of life. The wastewater from different sources contains suspended solids, organic and inorganic particles, dissolved solids, heavy metals, dyes and other impurities which are harmful to the environment causing major health hazards in human and animals. The use of bioflocculants is advantageous for the control of environmental pollution as they are non- toxic and biodegradable in nature. Moreover, they do not create any secondary pollution. Chemical flocculants being a source of carcinogens can be replaced by bioflocculants which needs to be produced on a large scale. However, commercially viable bioflocculants are yet to be produced and marketed widely. This review intends to present the updated information on microbial bioflocculants and their applications for remediation of pollutants from wastewater. It may bring up the significant issues which can be attempted by future researchers for a better understanding to develop commercially viable, safe, eco-friendly and cost effective bioflocculants using new biotechnological techniques.
