A study was undertaken with the aim of nutritional evaluation of mid day meals served in Allahabad schools. A survey was carried out among 103 girls (age 5-12 yrs) studying in two government primary schools. Weekly menus and nutritive value of mid day meals served in the schools of the district were analyzed in terms of calories, protein, fat, CHO, iron, calcium, folic acid, vitamin C and β-carotene. The mean values per serving were; kcal 463, protein 14.01, fat 6.24g,CHO 88g, iron 4.30mg, calcium 67.23mg, vitamin C 6.11mg folic acid 32.68 μg and β-carotene 11μg. The recommendation of experts that one third RDA of nutrients must be provided by the MDM, was met in the case of protein of 5-9 yrs age group but not in the 10-12yrs age group. Energy and iron were below 1/3 RDA in case of all the children surveyed. In general, micronutrients were low in the MDM.Keywords

Proactive coping skills consist of efforts undertaken in advance for a potentially stressful event to prevent it or to modify it's form before it occurs. The present study intended to compare the proactive coping skills of elderly males and females in different ecological settings. A sample of 120 males and their wives, belonging to NCR (Gurgaon) and Non-NCR (Hisar) were selected in the age range 35-40 years. Proactive coping skills were measured using Hindi Adaptation of Proactive Coping Inventory (PCI) developed by Bhushan et al. (2010). The results showed that males and females in higher percentage were in average category on all aspects of proactive coping skills as well as composite proactive coping skills. Though, non-NCR respondents (male and female) were using better proactive coping skills than their counterparts. Significant differences existed in reflective coping (z=2.54, p<0.05), preventive coping (z=2.70, p<0.05) and composite proactive coping skills (z=2.04, p<0.05) in male across two regions, whereas, females differed significantly in reflective coping (z=2.97, p<0.05) and composite proactive coping skills (z=2.09, p<0.05) in both regions. Instrumental support seeking, emotional support seeking and avoidance coping skills were more used by females.Keywords

“If you don't love yourself, you cannot love others”. This is the ultimate truth. If one is not able to accept oneself with all the flaws and qualities that one possess, then there's no guarantee that he/she can accept the other person without being judgmental. What is needed is a positive attitude and self-understanding toward oneself, most importantly self-compassion. Basically being gentle, kind and understanding with oneself. Accepting that one is not perfect and that there is potential for learning and growth in every mistake one makes (Neff, 2003). Self-compassion has been shown to be positively related to psychological health and well-being. This paper is an attempt to show how one can use self-compassion to overcome one's inner critic and enhance well-being.Keywords

From last few decades natural sources are gaining much more importance because of easy availability, low cost, non-toxicity, biocompatibility etc. of these natural products make them potential carriers in the drug delivery systems. A variety of benefits have been offered by plants and plant derived products in the pharmaceutical industry and acts as a source for number of therapeutically active drugs and excipients. Pectin is a naturally derived polysaccharide and currently various plant sources like oranges, different citrus fruits and apple pomace have been used for extraction of pectin under acidic conditions. It has excellent biodegradable and biocompatible nature which leads to various potential applications of pectin in pharmaceutical and foods industries. An attempt has been made in this review to briefly highlight the sources of pectin, classification, chemistry and pharmaceutical uses of pectin.Keywords

Background: Maternal bearing down efforts plays a vital role in expulsive phase of labor. Various types of bearing down efforts has got its own advantages and disadvantages on mother and fetus. Various studies are done to evaluate the best bearing down techniques and have different results .The investigator personally felt there is a need to investigate the best bearing down technique with less complications to the mother and newborn. Objective: 1. To assess the effect of vulsalva bearing down technique during second stage of labour on maternal and neonatal outcome among primigravida mothers admitted in selected hospitals of pune city. 2.To assess the effect of spontaneous bearing down technique during second stage of labour on maternal and neonatal outcome among primigravida mothers admitted in selected hospitals of pune city. 3. To compare the effectiveness of vulsalva bearing down techniques and spontaneous techniques and duration of second stage of labour on maternal and neonatal outcome among primigravida mothers admitted in selected hospitals of pune city. Methodology: In the present study, Quantitative research approach is applied and approach is applied and pre experimental, Post test only control group design is used. The setting of the study was selected hospital of Pune. The sample size for study was 60, selected by using Non Probability Purposive Sampling Technique. The structured questionnaire and observation checklist was administered. In order to establish the reliability of the tool inter rater method was used. The scores were calculated and the reliability was established by Kappa method, which was 0.90. Results: On Comparison of the Spontaneous and vulsulva bearing down techniques on various maternal and neonatal outcome. Since the P values corresponding to the Maternal outcome, oxytocin given, Perineal laceration ,Type of episiotomy, size of episiotomy ,mode of delivery and fatigue and Neonatal outcome Crown heel length of newborn, Head circumference of newborn, Neonate Resuscitation, Admission to NICU,APGAR score are small (less than 0.005) suggests that vulsulva bearing down technique is significantly different that spontaneous bearing down technique in the above maternal and neonatal outcomes and good result for the health of mother and newborn. Conclusion: The Spontaneous pushing method has a negative effect on various factors related to maternal and neonatal outcome factors according to the results in this study. Vulsalva pushing has various benefits towards the better health of Mother and Newborn so it should be accepted as best clinical practice.Keywords

Klinefelter syndrome is a rare condition in which one extra X chromosome (XXY) is present in males rather than the normal XY chromosomal pattern. It occurs in 1 in 500-1000 males. It occurs because of some random error during egg formation or sperm production.These types of children are slightly different from normal ones. Individuals with KS have some physical characteristics like tall stature, hypogonadism, gynacomastia, delayed or incomplete puberty, impaired spermatogenesis. KS can also lead to emotional, behavioural, social and other problems at school or college level. Some of the studies revealed that individual with KS have increased risk of language disorder. Parents also have a lot of burden or stress due to their sons' delayed or impaired development.About 1/4th of the total individuals having KS are diagnosed throughout their life span. Lifespan of boys having KS is approximately 2 years less than the normal boys.Diagnosis or Treatment of Klinefelter syndrome should be started at an early age.Keywords

This study examined the role of maternal parent interactions with child in academic achievement of school students. The purpose of the study was to determine how maternal authoritative, permissive and authoritarian parenting styles as well as parent's child relationship influence the academic achievement of students at high school level. The main objective is to find out predictors of academic achievement among high school students. The total sample (400) for the study involved 200 mothers and 200 high school students between the age range of 14 and 16 years. The parents were assessed with Parent Child Relationships scale (PCR) and Parenting Authority Questionnaire (PAQ-R). Academic achievement score of the students were taken as the average percentage of marks obtained by the students in previous two years in their annual examination conducted by their respective boards/schools. The data were analyzed with the correlation and regression (stepwise). The results showed that (i) authoritarian and permissive parenting style and academic performance have negative correlations. (ii) Parent's child relationships like Acceptance and Realistic Role Expectation have significant positive relationship with academic achievement whereas Carelessness and Lenient Standards have negative relationships with academic achievement (iii). The stepwise regression analysis found four pertinent predictors of academic achievement among high school students, i.e., permissive parenting style, authoritative parenting style, parental acceptance and over protection of parents. All four predictors jointly explained 29.6% of total variance in dependent variable.Keywords

Self-esteem may be particularly dynamic during the adolescent years. The time period is characterized by abrupt developmental changes in a number of developmental domains, which have an impact on changes in overall selfesteem and related domains. Adolescence in girls is a turbulent period, which includes stressful events like menarche, considered as a landmark of female puberty. For girls' and women's health, education, and dignity, good menstrual hygiene is essential. The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the difficulties girls have because of menstruation, namely how socio-cultural norms affect their self-esteem. The study was conducted on 240 adolescent girls in the age group of 10-14 years and 15-19 years belonging to rural and urban areas of Hisar district. Self- developed schedules were used to delineate personal, socio-personal variables, MHM status in terms of knowledge, attitude and practices, socio-cultural norms concerning menstruation. Self-esteem of adolescent girls was dependent variable for the present study which was assessed by using State Self-esteem Scale (SSES) developed by Heatherton and Polivy (1991). Frequency, percentages, mean, standard deviation, Z-test, ANOVA, correlation and chi-square tests were used to analyze the data as per objectives. The study found that more than onefourth of girls had poor level of knowledge and 21.25 percent girls followed poor practices regarding MHM and more than half (57.5%) of the girls need improvement in their attitude regarding MHM. Findings revealed that there was significant gap in MHM status of rural and urban girls. Girls attaining early menarche and having irregular periods had lower level of self-esteem. Age, class, menstrual cycle pattern, area of residence, mother education and father occupation were associated factors of low self-esteem in this study. Present study results confirmed significant impact of MHM status on self-esteem of adolescents.Keywords
