Abstract

With the current upsurge in stressful factors in everyday life, cardiac problems have increased at a rapid rate which in turn increases the burden of medical practitioners serving in this specific field. Research has focused little on the Occupational Stress and Burnout of Cardiologists. The aim of the current study is to explore the differences existing among Cardiologists belonging to eastern and western regions of India with respect to Occupational Stress and Burnout. The study further seeks to find out any differences existing among male and female Cardiologists belonging to eastern and western regions of India with respect to Occupational Stress and Burnout. It also seeks to probe into any differences existing among Cardiologist belonging to eastern and western regions of India with respect to the aforesaid variables on the basis of presence or absence of psychiatric morbidity in them. Using General Health Questionnaire a total sample of 180 Cardiologists was screened on Psychiatric Morbidity after they met the selection criteria. The sample was divided into two groups based on eastern and western region of India. These groups were further divided on the basis of their gender and Psychiatric morbidity sample were selected on the basis there consent and inclusion and exclusion criteria. They were assessed using the Occupational Stress Index and the Burnout Inventory. Results revealed that there are significant differences among cardiologists belonging to eastern and western regions of India with respect to role overload, role conflict, role ambiguity, and responsibility to persons, low status, unreasonable group and political pressure, profitability, strenuous working condition that contributes to high occupational stress in them. It further reveals that there are also significant difference existing among cardiologists belonging to eastern and western region of India with respect to distancing, neglecting, non accomplishment, friction, emotional exhaustion and depersonalize that contributes to significant burnout. Significant differences were found to be present in these two groups with the respect to the aforementioned variables when compared on the basis of their gender and psychiatric morbidity. The study shows that cultural differences exist among Cardiologists with respect to stress and burnout in the workplace.

Abstract

This qualitative study seeks to uncover and understand the life-term prisoners' perspectives of living as inmates in Correctional homes. It attempts to explore the experiences of sufferings and coping of prisoners in the light of threat to self being incarcerated, adjusting to challenges, interpersonal relationships, outlook towards future and death. Structured interviews were conducted with ten life-term prisoners, five male and five female, of two Correctional homes in Kolkata, having age range of 35-45 years. This was followed by a feedback session. Data analysis was done following Grounded Theory methodology. The findings reflected predominant helplessness, loss of dignity, suicidal ideation, feelings of shame and dejection on the one hand, while on the other maintaining faith in the Supreme power and hope, an urge to revenge, aggression towards others, high self-esteem and a will to fight back. An empty space created by separation from family is balanced by need for belongingness in prison-groups for support. Interpersonal relationships are mostly characterized by deception, exploitation and violence. Ambivalence towards future is revealed. Fear of death and relating it to divinity has been mostly noticed. The study shows that mental health problems posed by challenges of prison life need to be addressed adequately by building up forensic mental health support systems.

Abstract

Since its onset in 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic has devastated mankind in all possible aspects of life, hurting the children and adolescents in an extensive manner. This article presents various reflections obtained from our clinical and research activities with the children and adolescents in the community continuing through the pandemic months. The psychological well-being of the children and adolescents, across various ages and strata of the society, has reached new lows with each passing month. Research has shown a steep rise in the mental health problems in this population worldwide. This article talks about the multidimensional adverse impact of the pandemic faced by those residing at their own homes, enrolled and not enrolled in school and those living in institutions and streets. It is proposed that there is the need for a comprehensive child-friendly approach to render mental health intervention for these children and adolescents. The multifaceted strategies discussed in this approach address their mental health difficulties related to family, studies, school and different socio-economic conditions to uphold their best interests and psychological well-being.These needs to be done while taking in consideration the socio-cultural context and also maintaining the COVID-19 protocol as necessary in different settings. It should be involving all the stakeholders, like, parents, caregivers, teachers, school and other institutional staff, peers, mental health professionals and the significant others in the community. This can lead to create a better safe and sound place for the children and adolescents even among the pandemic blues.
