Abstract

Herbal remedies are widely used for the treatment and prevention of various diseases and often contain highly active pharmacological compounds. These products have the potential of contamination with different microorganisms. This is due to raw materials contamination and unhygienic production conditions. In this study, microbiological qualities of some herbal formulations were examined. Ten herbal products as tablet, powder and capsule were procured from local market Ghaziabad, U.P., India. The products were evaluated for microbial contamination as per method given in Indian Pharmacopoeia (2010) microbial limit test for enumeration and identification. Total aerobic count showed that all products had more than 1.5×10³cfu/g and total fungal count 2 ×10² cfu/g. Isolation and identification of microbial contamination showed that some of the samples were contaminated with Salmonella sp. There was no evidence for contamination of the samples by Staphylococcus aurous, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. In conclusion, all the samples of herbal drugs evaluated did not generally meet the standards for microbial limits as specified in official monographs. Such products can adversely affect health status of consumers as well as the stability of the products.

Abstract

Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) is genus of very diverse flowering trees, which is produced hard and durable heartwood and an important eucalyptol essential oil. Eucalyptus tereticornis Smith leaf is the important source of Eucalyptus oil, which is used as a pharmaceutical, antiseptic, repellent, flavoring and fragrance. The oil comprised of mainly monoterpene like α-pinene and 1,8-cineole as major constituents. Apart from essential oil, the leaf is also reported to presence of various non-volatile phytoconstituents viz; acyl phloroglucinol derivatives, triterpenoids, tannins, lignins, long chain fatty acids, flavonoids and other phenolic compounds. The leaves are also good source of important triterpenoids such as ursolic acid and betulinic acid, which has wide range of pharmacological activities and therapeutic uses. Various analytical methods have been reported for identification and quantification of phytoconstituents in the leaf of E. tereticornis. The leaf extract and oil of E. tereticornis showed various pharmacological activities like antihypergycemic, antibacterial antifungal, antioxidant larvicidal and myorelaxant property. The review attempts to highlight various available literature with respect to the chemical constitutes and their analysis by various chromatographic methods, uses and reported various pharmacological activities.

Abstract

Solanum indicum L. (Fam. Solanaceae) commonly known as poison berry in English is a prickly, much branched perennial under shrub, nearly upto 1m high, mostly found throughout India in warmer parts upto an elevation of 1500 m. This important medicinal plant is widely used in folk and traditional Indian systems of medicine for poisonous affections, skin diseases, ulcers difficult breathing, abdominal pain, cough and dyspepsia. In Ayurveda and Siddha. It is an important ingredient of dasamoola group of plants. The review attempts to highlight various available literature with respect to the therapeutic uses, enthno-medicinal uses, pharmacognostic studies, chemical constitutes and various reported pharmacological activities. Some steroidal alkaloids/glycoalkaloids such as Solasodine, Solasonine, Solamargine, Solanidine and Solanine were reported by various investigators. Pharmacognostic studies revealed the presence black powdery depositions of sandy crystals, throughout the ischolar_main, sclerieds in the cortical region, phloem fibres towards the periphery and uni to biseriate medullary rays in xylem and phloem as the diagnostic characters of ischolar_main of S. indicum. It is reported to have hepatoprotective, anthelmintic, antioxident and antimicrobial activity.
