Abstract

Purpose of the Study

To find out the influence of disc herniation at L5-S1 level on, H-reflex latency and H/M ratio. Apparatus Used:Electrodiagnosis machine, Plinth, Measuring tape, ECGgel.

Methodology

It is experimental study of same subject design. The study was conducted with 18 patients with disc herniation presented with unilateral radiating pain having positive SLR between age group of 20-50 yrs.

Procedure

H-reflex recording was performed on subjects after positioning of the patient and electrodes, recording was done after a submaximal stimulus was given for H-reflex to posterior tibial nerve of affected and unaffected leg respectively.

Result

Paired t-test was used for data analysis, which showed significant changes in H -latency (p<.05) and H/M ratio(p<.05) on affected side.

Conclusion

This study concluded that there are significant changes in H latency and H/M ratio on affected side. Hence H-reflex latency and H/M ratio can be used as diagnostic tool in L5- S1 level disc herniation.

Abstract

The whole span of life includes struggles, achievements, successes, and failures, natural and unnatural distresses. Psychological distress impairs the patient's capacity for pleasure, meaning, and connection; erodes quality of life which is a major risk factor for suicide and for requests to hasten death. Recent studies among terminally ill patients found that a desire for hastened death or an interest in assisted suicide was associated with depression. Depression is often neglected and untreated in the terminally ill which leads to desire for death1. An exploratory study was conducted on 100 terminally ill patients diagnosed with end stage renal disease (ESRD) and cancer in selected hospitals of Ludhiana, Punjab. The result of the study shows that there was a positive correlation between depression and suicide ideation (r = 0.515, p<0.001). Majority (96%) of patients had depression and (85%) had ideation of suicide. Significant association of depression was found with age, family income per month, duration of illness, education level and diagnosis. Significant association of ideation of suicide with variables was found with gender, and family income per month (p<0.05). The study concluded that the terminally ill patients had depression and ideation of suicide. Therefore, guidelines were prepared for them to reduce depression and developing positive attitude towards life.

Abstract

The departure point of this paper is the definition of materialism as a value as well as a trait. Materialism is seen in a negative light in the literature available on the topic. It is defined as the tendency to assign greater value to material goods and comforts as compared to the spintualvalues.Ithasbeenafodderforstudiesinvanousdisciplinesranging from philosophy, sociology, political science, and psychology. This paper attempts to investigate the relationships between materialism and life-satisfaction, self esteem. To this end, the data was collected from a sample of teachers (N=400) from colleges and universities in Chandigarh. The statistical analysts was conducted using SPSS. The techniques of Pearson Product Moment Correlation and student's t-test were employed. It was observed that people's endorsement of a materialistic lifestyle negatively correlates with their life satisfaction and self esteem. The findings of the study reveal that gender differences exist when it comes to expression of materialism as a trait comprising envy, non generosity and possessiveness. The gender differences were explored on all the variables. Males scored higher on materialism, females scored higher on self esteem and no gender differences were found on life satisfaction.

Abstract

To aid paraplegics, variety of electric wheelchairs exist in the market. Unfortunately, these cannot be used by persons with higher degree of impairment, such as quadriplegics, i.e. persons who, due to age or illness, cannot move any of their body parts, except head. An attempt is made to make lives of the people suffering from this problem simple and by simpler we mean self-reliant, which will thereby reinstate their confidence and their happiness. The idea is to create a Head Motion Controlled System which allow movement of the patient's wheelchair depending on the movements of the head. We know that a person suffering from quadriplegia can partially move his eyes and tilt his head, thus presenting an opportunity for detecting those movements. We have implemented a technology where a patient sitting on the Wheel Chair is able to move in a direction just by tilting his head in that direction.

Abstract

This paper demonstrated the outcomes of the research of a number of general document clustering and classification methods. Objectives: This research improves the clustering. Its objective is to create a system which reduces the retrieval time of text documents from clusters. Method: In this paper, we propose a new method supporting clustering and classification, using k-means with feed forward neural networks using MATLAB. We use k-mean for the clustering of text documents and neural networks for classification of text documents. Findings: Earlier various techniques have come up like semi supervised models for labelled text, namely Partially Labeled Dirichlet Allocation and the Partially Labeled Dirichlet Process, genetic algorithm, Guassian distribution, hybrid genetic algorithm, fast k means global, k-means clustering. But all these techniques have their merits as well as demerits and the common thing is that these techniques are very time consuming. That is why the main aim of the work is to develop the model based on supervised as well as unsupervised techniques to achieve the similarity between documents. Improvements: To remove that time consuming problem we used neural networks for classification and k-means for clustering. We developed a model based on supervised as well as unsupervised technique to achieve the similarity between documents.

Abstract

This study is an attempt to understand the modern age mobile phone addiction-nomophobia and its relationship with impulsiveness in youngsters. Nomophobia is on the rise in the population on account of technology dependence and penetration of mobile phones in the society. The literal meaning of nomophobia is the no-mobile-phone phobia. It is an anxiety experienced by an individual when he/she is not having access to their mobile phone. Impulsiveness is lack of impulse control and inability to delay gratification. This paper also examines gender differences in nomophobia and impulsiveness. For this purpose, sample was drawn from college students. The sample comprised two hundred bachelors and masters degrees students (N=200) i.e. one hundred males and one hundred females from the age range of 18-23 years. The questionnaire was administered to them after procuring informed consent. The techniques of Pearson Product Moment Correlation and student's t-test were employed for the analysis of data.

Abstract

Professions within the healthcare industry are becoming increasingly violent places in which to work with healthcare professionals being common targets for violent and aggressive behaviour. Aggression and violence negatively impact both workplace and its employees. For the organization, greater financial costs can be incurred due to increased absences, early retirement and reduced quality of care and it is mainly due to violence. For the healthcare worker however, psychological damage, such as post-traumatic stress, can result in addition to a decrease in job motivation.

The present study was conducted to assess the prevalence of violence by patients and their relatives towards staff nurses and to identify knowledge and utilization of safety resources among 100 staff nurses in Guru Nanak Dev Hospital of Amritsar (Punjab) with convenient sampling technique. All the staff nurses experienced assault during their duty hours mostly in the morning shift mainly in the wards. Most of them had average/poor knowledge about safety resources and unfavourable utilization of safety resources.

In conclusion, nurses are facing violence by patients and their relatives and hence they need to enhance knowledge and use of safety resources towards violence to combat violence.

Abstract

The present study attempts to understand the problem of domestic violence against wives. The research is conducted for identifying various causes, frequency, and nature of violence against wives. Domestic violence is one of violence against women forms. The problem of domestic violence is an important issue of inquiry in our society. Domestic violence is a serious problem, which occurs in many countries. In recent years domestic violence recognized as a serious problem globally and one which not only harm full effects on family members but it also on women, children, the community and the nation. There are many cases of domestic violence publishing on newspaper every day and mostly women are victims. There are many reasons behind domestic violence such as alcohol, low education, and low income and so on. The endemic nature of violence in our as also in all other societies increases the significance of its study as well as that of the present one. The paper highlights the nature, frequency and causes of domestic violence against wives of village Phaphre Bhaike from Mansa district. It also explores the socio-economic background of the respondents.

Abstract

Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a language in which pictorial representation makes a great significance. There is a disadvantage of inconsistency in the language. This is a very vast problem of the language which is not resolved yet. A lot of work has been done to remove the problem by the number of researchers but still more work is going on the language. The user has to suffer a lot if the problem get occurred. Consistency is termed as the compatibility of the system in which elements of different diagrams are combined and make a satisfied system which meets the required expectations of the user. In this paper, an automated approach is presented in which parsing technique and consistency rules are used. The consistency of two diagrams, i.e. use case and sequence diagram has been checked. Object Constraint Language (OCL) constraints are used for validation.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease and a major public health challenge worldwide. According to the International Diabetes Federation, there are currently 246 million diabetic people worldwide, and this number is expected to rise to 380 million by 2025. Diabetes is a standout amongst the most well -known non- transmittable diseases in the world .Vast amount of data available in health care industry is difficult to handle, hence mining is necessary to find the necessary pattern and relationship among the features available. Medical data mining is one major research area where evolutionary algorithms and clustering algorithms play a vital role . Several data mining and machine learning methods have been used for the diagnosis, prognosis, and management of diabetes. Several researchers are using statistical and data mining tools like rapid miner ,weka , KNIME etc. to help health care professionals in the diagnosis of diabetes. The data source for this research is taken from UCI repository. Various experiments are made iteratively by using various techniques on Tanagra and R tool. In this research work, K-Means is used for removing the noisy data and genetic algorithms for finding the optimal set of features with Support Vector Machine (SVM) as classifier for classification. It shows that the proposed method using Tanagra with an accuracy of 76.44 % has attained better results compared to R Tool with an accuracy of 75.39 %.

Abstract

Endophytes habitat plant tissue without causing any infections to plants, promoting plant growth and also act as defend mechanism from stressed condition of environment. An endophytic bacterium showing fluorescent green pigment while growing around Tinospora cardifolia stem tissue sample was screened for antagonistic activity against phytopathogenic fungi Fusarium moniliforme, Fusarium verticillioides, Curvularia lunata and Alternaria alternata. The isolate showed broad-spectrum antagonism against all test fungi. Microscopic examination of the co-cultures showed morphological alterations of fungal hyphae and spores in comparison to the fungal culture grown alone. The bacterial isolate was identified on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequencing as Pseudomonas sp. The isolate also showed multiple plant growth-promoting activities of phosphate solubilization, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase activity, and production of IAA-like auxins, siderophores, ammonia and hydrogen cyanide (HCN). The bacterial isolate significantly increased the shoot length, ischolar_main length and dry weight of maize plants in comparison to uninoculted plants in pots under natural conditions. The studies revealed the potential of the endophytic Pseudomonas sp. strain TCA1 to be used as plant growth-promoting microbial inoculant for disease control in agriculture.

Abstract

Materialism has been a topic of research in various disciplines since more than a few decades now. But its mammoth form is more haunting now a days as economies are reeling and individual dissatisfaction is on the rise. This paper attempts to investigate the relationship of materialism with impulsiveness. To this end, the data was collected from a sample of teachers (N=400) from colleges and universities in Chandigarh. The statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS. The techniques of Pearson Product Moment Correlation and student's t-test were employed. It was observed that participants' endorsement of a materialistic lifestyle correlates positively with their scores on impulsiveness. The gender differences were seen to exist on materialism trait and its components while no gender differences were found on impulsiveness and its second order factors.
