- Adaptive and Maladaptive Perfectionists: Do They Really Differ on Hardiness and Using Coping Strategy?

Demand – ability fit reflects the match between the person’s knowledge, skills and abilities and the individual’s job. While hundreds of specific traits have been studied in the context of person-environment (P-E) fit, the focus here is on the less frequently studied one’s namely, perfectionism. Perfectionism is defined as a striving to achieve excessively high standards while adopting stringent evaluations; it has been regarded both as an adoptive personality trait and a debilitating vulnerability factor (Blatt, 1995 & Pacht, 1984). With this rationale, the present study (i) firstly, aims at finding out the attributes of perfectionism (adaptive and maladaptive) among junior and senior executives working at public at private and public sector banks; (ii) secondly, to study the level of hardiness and coping strategy (functional and dysfunctional) among executives of banking sector with respect to their level of perfectionism (adaptive and maladaptive) and (iii) to find out the relationship among perfectionism and coping strategy, hardiness of executives. Sample includes 200 executives drawn from 6 public and private sector banks in Kolkata (India) using simple random sampling method. Primary data were collected using a standardized questionnaire and were analyzed using mean, t-test, Pearson’s product moment correlation and multiple regression analysis. Results indicated the following points:
- Senior and junior executives of private sector depicted different levels of perfectionism.
- Coping strategy (functional and dysfunctional) and hardiness vary with respect to the level of perfectionism of the executives.
- Adaptive perfectionism indicted the significant positive correlation with hardiness and functional coping style.
- Maladaptive perfectionism revealed the significant positive correlation with dysfunctional coping style and the reverse trend is evident in case of hardiness.
- Various coping strategies and hardiness in relation to adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism are discussed.

From the past few decades empirical studies have explored the interrelationships between gratitude, self-esteem and psychological well-being. Studies have also unveiled potential variation in the relationships providing a number of evidence showing a negative as well as non significant relationship between the studied variables. From this standpoint we aimed to explore the extent to which gratitude and self-esteem could predict psychological well- being. The sample comprised of 210 young adults (100 males and 110 females) from West Bengal, India. Measures included the Gratitude Questionnaire (McCullough et al., 2002), Ryff's Psychological Well-Being Scale (Ryff, 1995), and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965).Means, Standard deviations, Pearson's product moment correlation of coefficient and regression analyses were conducted. Findings showed significant positive relationship among variables except the relationships between gratitude and autonomy, autonomy and environmental mastery, environmental mastery and positive relation, purpose in life and self-acceptance.The regression analyses reveal that predictors such as gratitude and self-esteem were significantly related to different dimensions of psychological well-being. Gratitude had been found to be the most predictive factor. The findings contribute to the existing knowledge in the field of positive psychology which inculcates the sense of meaningfulness and autonomy among individuals which in turn makes people high on psychological well-being.

Stereotyping, gender discrimination, and oppression are still exists in this society. Lesbians, gay, bisexuals and transgender people are a stigmatized group that goes through several trouble while growing up in a heterosexual society mainly regarding the identification of their real identity. In this context, this study investigated the self perception (Self-esteem & Self-concept) and Social identity among Mainstream heterosexual male and female (W=70) and LGBT (N= 40) adults. This study aims to analyze the Self-esteem, Self-concept and Social identity among heterosexual and LGBT adults. Self-esteem, self-concept and social identity were measured by using three different scales. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, The Personal Self-concept Questionnaire (PSQ) and the Multi Group Ethnic Identity Measures (MEIM) were administered to serve the purpose of the study. The result reveals a significant mean difference among mainstream heterosexual and LGBT adults in self-esteem, self-fulfillment, autonomy and honesty. Self-esteem is found to be low in LGBT adults in comparison to heterosexual adults. In relation to self-perception, identity affirmation also differs significantly among mainstream and LGBT adults and is also found to be low in LGBT adults. These factors may have an influence on the identification of their sexual- identity and also influence their attitude toward homosexuality. Specially in this changing time there is not much that we know about the LGBT individuals, there is a need of more research done on this community. No matter what the sexual identity of the individual it needs to be respected and accepted for more inclusive society.Keywords
