To improve the highway safety and throughput between vehicles in road traffic VANET are formed. Through CACC the inter vehicle communications are achieved to meet the control challenges in cooperative environment. Platoon management algorithms were formed to route the participating vehicles. This paper addresses the communication drawbacks between the vehicles in platoon. This paper proposes two topologies in CACC to minimize the communication delay. This paper proposes two topologies as One Vehicle Look – Ahead and Two Vehicle Look – Ahead with CACC. More than two vehicles are participating in the platoon and their string stability has been taken for performance evaluation. Performance analyses were made to five vehicles to identify the suitable one.

This work focuses on exploration of the performance measures of Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) learning algorithm using various activation functions and BPNN parameters viz. number of epochs, number of neurons and learning rate. The results show that the Tangent Sigmoid activation function with 20000 epochs, 15 neurons and 0.0001 learning rate has the capability to improve the accuracy of BPNN algorithm. The experiment is conducted on Diabetes dataset provided by the Department of Medicine, University of Virginia School of Medicine.Keywords

Background: The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) was epidemic in its third decade and has become a pandemic disease that threatens the world population. It affects all body systems as well as the mental health and social relationships of carriers and asymptomatic patients.
Aim: To determine the knowledge and attitude of Pre-university students on HIV/AIDS.
Methods: A descriptive survey design was used for the study. The study was conducted in the selected preuniversity colleges in Mangalore. Population for this study constituted pre-university college students of Mangalore. The sample comprised of 200 students from selected pre-university colleges. Non-Probability purposive sampling technique was used to select the college students. Instruments used were demographic proforma, structured knowledge questionnaire and rating scale.
Results: Majority (69%) of pre-university students had adequate knowledge on HIV/AIDS and 31% had inadequate knowledge on HIV/AIDS. Majority (68.5%) of pre-university students had favorable attitude on HIV/AIDS and (31.5%) had unfavorable attitude on HIV/AIDS.
Conclusion: Information about behavior, attitude and knowledge through regular surveys is essential to better understand the dynamics of HIV epidemic.

Background: "learning disabilities" is a term associated with difficulties in reading, writing, doing maths and motor co-ordination. Awareness about learning disabilities is required for early identification and further remediation. Teachers are the first ones, usually to suspect a learning disability in a child. For appropriate observation and referrals for further assessment, a teacher should be aware of the various characteristics of learning disabilities which differ from individual to individual.
Aim: awareness regarding learning disabilities among private and government school teachers. Methods: comparative study design was adopted for the study. A sample of 25 government school teachers and 30 private school teachers was selected by purposive non probability sampling technique from 6 selected schools of Mangalore. A demographic data and structured awareness questionnaire was used for data collection.
Results: the result showed that 93.3% of private school teachers and 92% of government school teachers had average awareness. The findings also showed that there is no significant difference between level of awareness regarding learning disability between private and government school teachers. t(53) = 2.005 at P < 0.05 level of significance. The study also revealed that there is no significant association between level of awareness regarding learning disability with selected demographic variables like age, teaching experience, and educational qualification (χ2 = 1.044,0.237, 0.959, and χ2 = 2.755, 1.004, 6.284 at P < 0.005 level of significance for private and government school teachers respectively.

Background: Injuries are the major cause of illness, especially for primary school children. Schools are the one of the common places of accidents. Knowledge on first aid among school teachers is very important to help a casualty as soon as injuries occur so that life could be saved.
Aim: to determine the effectiveness of planned teaching programme on first aid management of selected emergencies among school teachers.
Methods: Pre-experimental one group pretest- post test design was used for the study. The study was conducted in two primary schools of Mangalore. The population was the primary school teachers of Mangalore. The sample comprised of fifty school teachers. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the school teachers. Instruments used were demographic proforma and structured knowledge questionnaire.
Results: The collected data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study findings revealed that majority (64%) of the school teachers had average knowledge. Post test knowledge scores of the school teachers significantly increased after the administration of the planned teaching programme. No significant association was found between level of knowledge of school teachers and demographic variables.
Conclusion: the planned teaching programme is an effective teaching strategy to improve the knowledge on first aid management of selected emergencies among school teachers.

Surgery can be a threatening experience for everyone, especially for children. Children are more vulnerable for anxiety due to their lack of knowledge of procedures, a lack of perceived control, a lack of explanation in childappropriate terms, and a lack of pain management. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of picture book on preoperative anxiety among children (6-12 years). A Quasi experimental pre-test post-test control group design was used and purposive sampling technique was adopted to select the total 30 preoperative children. Hamilton anxiety rating scale was used to assess the preoperative anxiety in children. The results shown that, experimental group (80%) had severe anxiety and control group (60%) had moderate to severe anxiety in pre test and during post test highest percentage of subjects in the experimental group (53.33%) had mild to moderate anxiety while comparing to control group. The mean post-test anxiety level (24.8±2.98) was lowered than the pre-test anxiety level (32.86±3.29), t(14)=2.15, p<0.05. The mean post-test level of anxiety in experimental group (24.8±2.98) was significantly lower than the mean post-test anxiety level of the control group (30.07±2.96), t(28)=2.05, p<0.05. Hence it is revealed that picture book found effective in reducing the preoperative anxiety among children.Keywords

Alcoholism is considered as a serious public health issue in India and at large in the world. Adolescence is a period of the life cycle when individuals are managing multiple and complex development tasks. They have less self control, emotional stability and more likely to smoke, drink, use drugs, and get in to trouble with the law. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge of adolescents regarding alcoholism and its effects in an urban school at mangalore. A descriptive survey approach was adopted for the study. Sample of 100 male students between 14-17 years studying at Rosario English medium school at Mangalore were selected by simple random sampling (lottery method). A demographic variable and structured knowledge questionnaire was used for data collection. The result revealed that majority (80%) of the samples had average knowledge regarding alcoholism and its effects, 17 % of the samples had poor knowledge and 3% of the adolescents had good knowledge regarding alcoholism and its effects and also found that there was a significant association of demographic variables such as religion and past experience of exposure to knowledge regarding alcoholism and its effect with knowledge score at P < 0.005 level of significance.Keywords

Due to invention of new diseases, the need of antibiotics is increasing day by day. As many of the Schiff base transition metal complexes possess antibacterial activity we have planned to prepare some Schiff base transition metal complexes and to assess their antimicrobial activity. So, we have prepared the Schiff base by condensing Salicylaldehyde and Thiourea. Using this as the ligand, transition metal complexes have been prepared with the metal ions Ni(II), Fe(II), Hg(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II). The ligand as well as the complexes were characterized by using experimental techniques like Elemental Analysis, UV-Vis, FT-IR, and 1H NMR. The structure is proposed. The antibacterial activity of the complexes have been assessed against the bacteria Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Ceftazidime, Salmonella typhi “H”, Klebsiella Aerogenes, Micrococci, Proteus vulgaris ,and Bacillus subtilis. Some of the complexes show antibacterial activity.

As the environment becomes polluted more and more the number of pathogens causing diseases are also enormously increasing. With the increasing analytical techinques, more number of newer pathogens are discovered. As this number is going on increasing, the need for potential antibiotics is also increasing day by day. Having this point in mind, we have planned to synthesize some Schiff base transition metal complexes, to assess their antibacterial activity. So, we have prepared the transition metal complexes of the metal ions Fe(II), Cu(II), Hg(II),Co(II) and Zn(II) using the Schiff base derived from salicylaldehyde and p- methoxy aniline. The Schiff base was first prepared by condensing salicylaldehyde and p- methoxy aniline.Using this as the ligand, the Schiff base metal complexes were prepared with Fe(II), Cu(II), Hg(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) as metal ions. The structure of the ligand was confirmed by IR, UV-Visible and 1H- NMR spectra. The shift in the spectral bands of the ligands up on complexation was also confirmed by taking the spectra of complexes.Using this we have proposed the possible common structure for the complex. To access the antibacterial ability of these metal complexes, anti bacterial activity of Schiff base transition metal complexes against the bacterias Pseudomonas sp, Klebsiella sp, Bacillus sp, Staphylococcus sp, E.col, Micrococcus, Proteus sp, Pseudomonas fluorescence and Salomonella enterica are estimated by finding out their zone of inhibition using disc diffusion method. We have observed that higher antimicrobial activity of 8mm in mercury complex against bacillus sp.

Background: Cognitive development is the construction of thought process, including remembering, problem solving and decision making from childhood through adolescence to adulthood. Nurturing family environments are associated with the positive outcomes for children's development. Research over the last 30 years has demonstrated that the positive interaction between the child and the parents or other caregiver significantly impacts the development of brain. Aim: comparative study between the children (6-12 years) under parental care and the orphans regarding the cognitive development in selected areas of Mangalore. Methods: comparative study design was adopted for the study. A sample of 50 children from orphanage and 50 from schools were selected by simple random sampling technique, lottery methods was used to select 100 sample. A demographic data and structured cognitive questionnaire was used for data collection. Results: the result showed that the highest (72%) of children under parental care and (58%) of orphans had good cognitive development. there is no significant difference between the children (6-12 years) under parental care and orphans (t98 = 1.747) at P < 0.05 level of significance. And also found that there is a significant association between the level of cognitive development of orphans with age of the children (χ2= 40.04 at P< 0,05) and children under parental care with education (χ2= 32.09) at P < 0.05 level of significance.Keywords

Clustering is the process of splitting data into several groups based on the characteristics of data. Fuzzy clustering assigns a data object to various clusters based on different membership values. In medical field, the diagnosis of the disease has to be done without faults and in an earlier time without any delay. So, there is a need to represent imprecise nature of the data. To represent vague data in a clear manner, Intuitionistic fuzzy set introduces a parameter called hesitancy degree. In case of Intuitionistic fuzzy clustering, this indicates that the user is not aware whether the object belongs to or not belongs to a cluster. In such a case, hesitancy can very well represent the inherent noise in the data or the ignorance of the user that is given by the state ‘may be’. All clustering algorithms choose the initial seed in a random fashion. But, this creates a serious impact on the convergence of the algorithm and the clustering algorithms tend to fall into local minima. This work utilizes Intuitionistic fuzzy Particle Swarm Optimization to initialize the centroids for the Intuitionistic fuzzy clustering algorithm. The algorithm is executed over medical datasets from UCI repository and the results indicate that optimal clusters are achieved. The proposed method performs well when compared with IFCM and FCM-PSO.Keywords

Cluster analysis is the unsupervised learning technique that finds the interesting patterns in the data objects without knowing class labels. Most of the real world dataset consists of categorical data. For example, social media analysis may have the categorical data like the gender as male or female. The k-modes clustering algorithm is the most widely used to group the categorical data, because it is easy to implement and efficient to handle the large amount of data. However, due to its random selection of initial centroids, it provides the local optimum solution. There are number of optimization algorithms are developed to obtain global optimum solution. Cuckoo Search algorithm is the population based metaheuristic optimization algorithms to provide the global optimum solution. Methods: In this paper, k-modes clustering algorithm is combined with Cuckoo Search algorithm to obtain the global optimum solution. Results: Experiments are conducted with benchmark datasets and the results are compared with k-modes and Particle Swarm Optimization with k-modes to prove the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.Keywords

vitamin A deficiency is one of the nutritional problems in India. Children below 5 years are more vulnerable to this deficiency. Mothers are the primary care giver and have to be equipped with knowledge of vitamin A deficiency. Aim: Effectiveness of visual package on knowledge regarding vitamin ‘A’ deficiency and its prevention among mothers of under five children. Methods: pre-experimental one group pretest posttest design was used for the study. The study was conducted in Moodshedde area in Mangalore. The sample consisted of 30 mothers of under five children were selected by using purposive sampling techniques. The instruments used were demographic proforma and structured knowledge questionnaire. Results: the data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The result revealed that in pretest 73.3% of mothers had average knowledge while 3.3% had inadequate knowledge; where as in the post-test 70% of the mothers had adequate knowledge. The present study showed that there is a significant difference between pre-test and post-test knowledge score t(29) – 5.14 at p<0.05 and also found that there is no significant association of knowledge score with demographical variable as age of the mother, religion, educational status, source of information , number of children ( X2=0.45, 1.28,2.48,2.064,1.47 at p <0.05).Keywords

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a major metabolic disorder causing morbidity and mortality worldwide. The prominent adverse effects of allopathic drugs are the principal reason for an escalating number of people seeking alternative and complementary-based therapies that may have less or no adverse effects. The poly-herbal formulation Vilva Kudineer Choornam (VKC) is a combination of Siddha medicinal plants for the treatment of diabetes. The present study aimed to investigate the antioxidant and antidiabetic efficacy of poly-herbal formulation by invitro assays. The Aqueous Extract of Formulation (AEF) and Ethanol Extract of Formulation (EEF) were used for the assay. In the present research work, the antioxidant potential of polyherbal formulation (VKC) was evaluated using DPPH radical scavenging and Nitric oxide radical scavenging assay. The IC50 value of AEF was 333.02 μg/ml and EEF was 86.37 μg/ml in DPPH radical scavenging assay whereas, in nitric oxide scavenging assay, the IC50 of AEF and EEF were found to be 8.61 μg/ml and 447.77 μg/ml, respectively. The VKC was also screened for in-vitro antidiabetic potential by alpha-amylase inhibition assay and it was shown to have significant percentage inhibition of alpha-amylase. The IC50 of EEF and AEF were found to be 868.84 μg/ ml and 247.09 μg/ml, respectively. The findings suggest that the polyherbal formulation (VKC) has significant antioxidant and antidiabetic activity. Further in vitro studies using cell lines and other enzymes may be carried out to fully establish the anti-diabetic potential of the polyherbal formulation.
