Abstract

The particulate pollution has always been a matter of great concern because of its adverse effect on human and plant population. In the present global environmental scenario, this problem has become increasingly severe. The particulates and gaseous pollutants, alone and in combination, can cause serious setbacks to the overall physiology of plants. Results from numerous investigations of human respiratory and other diseases have shown a consistent statistical association between human exposures to the outdoor levels of particulates or dust and adverse health impacts. These hazards are more pronounced in the vicinity of industries where these particles become air-borne and inhalable. Research has shown that plant leaves being the main receptor of particulate pollution can act as biological filters, removing large quantities of particles from the urban atmosphere. This physical trait can be used to determine the level of particulate pollution in the surroundings, as well as the ability of individual plant species to intercept and mitigate particulate pollutants. In the present study, fifteen plant species (11 trees and 4 shrubs) growing around the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) area were selected. Particulate or dust load on leaf surfaces and leaf surface morphology as a measure of dust trapping ability of leaves were analysed. The plant species such as Alstonia scholaris, Anthocephalus indicus, Cassia auriculata, Cassia siamea, Lagerstroemia speciosa, Mimusops elengi, Peltophorum inerme and Tabebuia aurea were found to have high dust capturing capacity; Albizia lebbeck, Bougainvillea spectabilis, Ficus religiosa, Swietenia mahagoni and Thevetia nerifolia have medium, while species such as Caesalpinea pulcherima and Delonix regia have low dust capturing capacity. Results also indicate that leaf surface morphology greatly determines the dust trapping capacity of a particular plant species.

Abstract

An experimental one group pre test and post test design was carried out to assess the communication pattern and level of satisfaction among mechanically ventilated patients. Sixty numbers of mechanically ventilated and conscious patients were selected in a multispecialty Hospital by non probability purposive sampling technique. The technique used for data collection were interview Performa for demographic data and self structured rating scale to assess communication pattern and level of satisfaction. The result shows that, mean post test score of satisfaction level is 36.9, which is higher than mean pre test score of satisfaction level 31.4. The stander deviation of post test 2.51 is less than stander deviation of pre test 2.55 which indicates that the group is more homogenous in post test and marked improvement in satisfaction level in post test than pre test.

Mean post test score of communication pattern is 134.4, which is higher than mean pre test score of communication pattern 78.85. The stander deviation of post test 6.69 is less than stander deviation of pre test 7.2 which indicates that the group was more homogenous in post test and has a marked improvement in communication pattern in post test than pre test.

There is significant positive relationship between communication pattern and level of satisfaction of the patients with mechanical ventilator. The calculated r value is 0.25 (before using communication board) and 0.29 (after using communication board) indicate high significant relationship between communication pattern and level of satisfaction of the patients with mechanical ventilator. The investigator observed that all patients admitted on mechanical ventilator had poor communication pattern and thus frustrated.

Abstract

Introduction: In India, Anemia continues to be a major public health nutritional problem in India, and has adverse health and economic implications

Aims and objectives: The aim of the study was to screen anaemia among rural women (18-45yrs) in the selected rural area of Mysore with a view to develop an information booklet

Approach and design: In the study, exploratory descriptive approach was used.

Samples and sampling criteria: The Anemia was screened among 90 rural women by Sahli-Hellige method.

Results: Results of the study revealed that, 13.33% of women belongs to normal (>12gm/dl), 32.22% of women belongs to mild (10-12gm/dl) anaemia, 28.89% of women belongs to moderate (8-10gm/dl) anaemia and 25.56% of women belongs to severe (<8gm/dl) anaemia.

Conclusion: Thus study concludes that, there it is a need to strengthen the activities related to anemia in rural area.

Abstract

Aims and Objectives: To find out the effect of teaching by video assisted on awareness, pre procedural anxiety level and satisfaction of patients undergoing upper Gastro intestinal endoscopy.

Background: Anxiety is very much common in gastro intestinal endoscopy in majority of patients. Informing the patients about the procedure to become aware regarding the procedure and providing psychological support during procedure is one of the best method to reduce anxiety and increase satisfaction among patients undergoing upper gastro intestinal endoscopy.

Design: Quasi Experimental Design.

Methods: 60 patients undergoing upper gastro intestinal endoscopy were recruited for this study. The experimental group (n=30) watched a video assisted teaching programme on upper gastro intestinal endoscopy. The control group (n=30) received routine care.

Results: The experimental group reported increase in awareness and satisfaction scores were increased after upper endoscopy procedure. The pre procedural anxiety level was reduced in case of experimental group also.

Conclusion: The video assisted teaching programme on upper gastro intestinal endoscopy increased the awareness, reduced the pre procedural anxiety level and satisfaction of patients after completion of the procedure.

Abstract

The Impulse Radio based Ultra Wideband (IR-UWB) system transmits data by sending pulses, each with very small time duration followed by pauses that are approximately two hundred times that length. Rake receiver improves system performance by equalizing signals from different paths. This enables the use of Rake receiver techniques in UWB systems. For high data rate ultra-wideband communication system, performance comparison of ARake, PRake and SRake receivers are attempted. Although UWB communication offers a promising solution in an increasingly overcrowded frequency spectrum, mutual interference due to coexistence with other spectrally overlapping wireless system degrades the performance of both systems. The narrow band systems may cause interference with UWB devices as it is having very low transmission power and the large bandwidth. So it may jam the UWB receiver completely degrading their performance. Rake receiver alone fails to perform in such condition. A hybrid SRAKE-MMSE time domain equalizer is proposed to overcome this by taking into account both the effect of the number of rake fingers and equalizer taps. This scheme selects the first strongest multipath components and combines them using a SRake receiver based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. It also combats inter-symbol interference by considering the same advantages. Study on non-line of sight indoor channel models illustrates that bit error rate performance of UWB SRAKE-MMSE (both LE and DFE types) improves for CM3 model with smaller spread compared to CM4 channel model cancelling out the narrowband interference. A modified UWB channel model is proposed using the Rician distribution for underwater communication. Again BER performance of the proposed receiver is compared with traditional receiver technique for the underwater UWB LOS channel model.

Abstract

The high stress level resulting from employee intra-organizational and extra-organizational interactions is a serious problem in reducing satisfaction and motivation level. Keeping in mind and for retaining excellent nurses and stimulating them to do their best to serve hospitals and take on future challenges in today's environment, the investigator is motivated for this study to investigate how organisational role stress among nurses could affect their job satisfaction. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the present study. The study was conducted in selected private hospital of Bhubaneswar. A structural modified organizational stress scale which was modified form of organizational role stress scale and another job satisfaction survey scale were used to find out the correlation between organizational role stress and job satisfaction. The sample size consists of 50 registered staff nurses of selected hospital and samples were selected by simple random sampling technique. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics.

The study findings demonstrated that the rank order of factors of organizational role stress were personal inadequacy having 1^st rank, role strength was ranked 2^nd, role isolation ranked 3^rd and role extension conflict was having 10^th rank. The study also revealed that 28% of subjects were not satisfied at all with their job and 72% were satisfied with their job.

Level of education and role overload were extremely statistically significant where (χ² _{=13.4, DF=1} and two tailed P value equals to 0.0003). The association between setting of work and role extension conflict was considered to be very statistically significant where (χ² _{=15.2, DF=4} and two tailed P value equals to 0.0043). It was also observed that the correlation between organizational role stress and the level of job satisfaction was considered to be statistically significant in which (r = - 0.34, DF=48 and two tailed P value equals to 0.0157).

The research hypothesis was formulated after analysis. The findings of the study may help to increase nurses' job satisfaction and encourage them to stay at their work. This would avoid the vicious circle of high turnover which is wasteful of the organization's valuable human resources.

Abstract

This paper highlights findings from a literature search to examine the impact of work related stress on burnout among I.C.U nurses and the review further focused on whether their perception change during the working period and the impact of working area preferences. Unless nurses perceptions are changed regarding work related stress they may affect the output of service. Implicaions for relieving job related stress include orientation to physical in frastcture ,policies and protocols ,in-service education, conselling schedules ,good remuneration etc. that foster the retention of nurses where there is growing need of qualified nurses and prevent burn out among nurses. More research is needed to determine the effectiveness of coping strategies into stress inoculation programmes. These programmes give persons preparatory information to enable them to increase their tolerance for subsequent threatening events. Stress inoculation should be included in nursing curricular and staff development programmes. However to avoid 'blaming the victim', the nurse who succumbs to burnout because of overwhelming environmental stressors, stress inoculation should be coupled with organizational strategies to promote positive working conditions. Also research is needed to determine the value of guidelines for stress management programme and stress management modules when to be implemented and their effectiveness for I.C.U registered nurses to prevent and control the burnout. It is essential for the management is to listen the concern of nurses, provide flexible scheduling, adequate staffing levels as well as appropriate rewards and recognition. Stress management programme should be incorporated into the curriculum of neophytes by nursing training institutions with the aim of empowering them with coping resources as they enter the nursing profession so that the percentage of burnout can be reduced to a greater extent.

Abstract

Currently society is experiencing a severe nursing shortage. This shortage is projected to worsen in the next decade and could seriously affect the nation's health care. It is imperative that the nursing profession is able to recruit and retain qualified nurses. This must begin with the educational process and college of nursing must recruit the graduate students of high quality that are ready to meet the challenges and demand of the profession. High perceived stress level and lack of effective coping skill could present a barrier to this goal. Descriptive survey approach and cross-sectional design was undertaken for the above study. The study was conducted in selected nursing college of Bhubaneswar. A modified structured Nurses stress rating scale was prepared for data collection. The sample selected for the study were 100 B.sc nursing students, among them 50 students were junior B.sc nursing students and 50 students were senior B.sc nursing students who met the inclusion criteria using simple random sampling technique. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics.

The study findings demonstrated that among five areas of perceived stress the highly rated perceived stressful areas were physical stress having rank 1^st and Spiritual stress having rank 2^nd, psychological stress having rank 3^rd, economical stress in rank 4^th and sociocultural stress in rank 5^th. It was also observed that there is a significant association between the intensity of perceived stressors and sex of the nursing students at (chi square (2) = 3.841, P<0.05). The research hypothesis was formulated after analysis. The findings of the study may help to recognize the perceived stressors and their association with other factors. Accordingly plan the activities to reduce stress in nursing students.
