The present investigation aims to determine the utility of meditation in enhancing positive affect, happiness, health, satisfaction with life, self esteem & well-being, and reducing negative affect, stress, anxiety and aggression. For the purpose of the present study, a total of 100 people, half males and half females, in the age range of 40-50 years (Average Age 44.7 years), have been studied thrice over a period of one year on all the study variables. The subjects have been picked up from the enrolment list of various Meditation Centers in Chandigarh and New Delhi. At the beginning of the study, when the subjects are not involved in any meditational activity, their baseline scores are obtained. Then they are initiated into a meditation program. A second assessment is done after three months period, during which the subjects are involved in meditative activity for five hours each week. Finally the third assessment is done after one year of involvement in the meditative activity, for five hours each week. A comparison is made of all the three assessments to find out if the practice of meditation has made any difference to the subjects. The subjects were assessed on Positive and Negative Affectivity Scale (Watson, 1988), Psychological well being (Ryff&Keyes, 1995), Satisfaction with Life (Diener et al., 1985), Clinical Anxiety Scale (Hudson, 1992), Index of Clinical Stress (Abell,1991), Self rated Perceived Happiness Status rating scale (Fordyce, 1995), Self rated Perceived Health Status rating scale (Blaxter, 1995), Aggression Questionnaire (Buss&Perry,1992), Self Esteem Questionnaire (Rosenberg,1965). For Positive Affect, Satisfaction with Life, dimensions of Psychological Well being, Self esteem, Perceived Happiness and Perceived Health, the baseline mean scores were the lowest followed by the mean scores after 3 months of meditation, and then by the mean scores after 12 months of meditation. This indicates an enhancement of positive emotional and mental states. The trends reversed for Negative Affect, Stress, Anxiety and dimensions of Aggression i.e., the baseline mean scores were the highest followed by the mean scores after 3 months of meditation,and then by theme an scores after 12 months of meditation. This indicates a decrease in negative emotional and mental states. This leads us to an inference that with meditation, the subjects have shown an improvement in the dimensions of positive affective and mental states and have shown a decline in the dimensions of negative affective and mental states.Keywords

The field of Positive psychology intends to study positive human strengths and their benefit to enhance optimal functioning. Character strengths have been one of the key elements of Positive psychology. Gratitude and forgiveness are considered as character strengths and have received attention in empirical researches but majority of researches have been carried out among adults. The preventive nature of positive psychology has observed the need to enhance wellbeing early in childhood and adolescent years. The present study explored the relationship between gratitude, forgiveness and wellbeing among adolescents. The sample size taken was 250 (125 boys and 125girls). Statistical analysts included Pearson Product Moment correlation method and t-test. The results revealed that gratitude and forgiveness have been found to be positively correlated with psychological wellbeing. The study also indicated that gratitude and forgiveness showed positive correlation with life-satisfaction, positive affect and negative correlation with negative affect (components of subjective wellbeing). The attempt was made to explore gender differences in the study.Keywords

The study examined the relationship between mindfulness and subjective well-being among adolescents. The sample size taken was 250 (125 boys & 125 girls). Statistical analysis included Pearson Product Moment correlation method using SPSS. The present study was a comparison between abstinent and relapsed opioid dependents on perceived social support. The sample of the study consisted of 200 males, out of which 100 were abstinent and 100 were relapsed male opioid dependents. Sample was selected randomly from the Govt. and Private Rehabilitation Centres of Punjab. Muliti-dimentional scale of Perceived Social Support (Zimet et al., 1988) was administered to the study sample. Means, Standard Deviations and t-ratios were calculated to determine the differences between two groups. The findings of the study reveal that relapsed opioid dependents are lower on perceived social support as compared to abstinent opioid dependents. In order to help the drug dependents, one must work towards enhancing their social support, so that their struggle against drugs can be beneficially mediated by the facilitating role of social support.Keywords

The present study was an attempt to find out the difference between abstinent and relapsed opioid dependents on Hardiness. The sample of the study consisted of 200 male opioid dependents, out of which 100 were abstinent and 100 were relapsed opioid dependents selected randomly from the Govt and Private Rehabilitation Centres of Punjab. Hardiness Scale (Kobasa & Kahn, 1982) was used to collect the data. Means, Standard Deviations and t-ratios were calculated to determine the differences between two groups. The findings of the study revealed that there is a significant difference between the two groups on hardiness, with the abstinent group scoring higher on hardiness, in comparison to the relapsed group. The findings clearly reveal that to increase abstinence among the opioid dependants, the treatment and rehabilitation services should focus on enhancing commitment among the drug addicts.Keywords

Adolescence is a crucial stage in life and the growing child's experiences have a long lasting impact on their mental health. Parental practices vis-a-vis child's biological sex can bring out experiential differences in terms of their happiness and well-being. The present investigation aims to look for gender differences among adolescents on well-being. For the purpose of the present study, a total of 102 adolescent students studying in a government school in Mohali, have been studied on all the study variables. Out of 102 students, 5 8 are boys and 44 are girls, all in the age range of 14 to 17 years. The subjects were assessed on The Happiness Measure (Fordyce, 1988); Revised Life Orientation Test (LOT-R) (Scheier & Carver, 1994); Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (Goodman, 2007); General Self-Efficacy Scale (Schwarzer, 1992); and The Sterling's Children Weil-Being Scale (Liddle & Carter, 2009). The assessment was done with the goal of looking for gender differences among adolescents on well-being. Results indicated that the mean scores on happiness, hyperactivity, emotional symptoms, conduct problems, peer pressure, and positive outlook, are higher for boys. The mean scores on optimism, positive emotional state, and total well-being are higher for girls. The mean scores on prosocial behaviour and self efficacy have come out to be equal for boys and girls. Sex differences emerged only on peer pressure implying boys to be more influenced by peer pressure than girls. The paper will try to understand the trends of the findings.Keywords

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a serious psyc 5rhiatric condition that can develop in an individual after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event related to shock, physical harm or threat. PTSD can be a consequence of a traumatic event that has caused intense fear or helplessness. The purpose of the given study was to explore the significant differences between the coping strategies used by MD Physician students who were stuck in Ukraine and experienced war conditions for 6 days, who experienced PTSD and who did not experience PTSD. A sample of 30 students, pursuing MD Physician from V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University was considered, from which 13 reported PTSD and 17 did not report PTSD. These two groups were then compared using a t-test for unequal sample size on their use of coping strategies. The result shows that the students who experienced PTSD scored higher on the self-blame dimension of coping (t=2.75), behavioural disengagement dimension of coping (t=2.35) and avoidant coping dimension (t=2.18) in comparison to students who did not experience PTSD.- Linking Psychological Empowerment, Self-leadership and Psychological Capital among Y oung Entrepreneurs: Role of Positive Psychology in Building a Self-reliant India

The present study focuses on exploring the linkages between psychological empowerment, self-leadership and psychological capital among young entrepreneurs. A total of 35 entrepreneurs (18 males & 17 females) within the age range of 23-30 years were selected from the tri-city , based on the inclusion criteria. The study participants were administered the standardized measures of Psychological Empowerment Scale (Spretizer, 1996); Revised Self- leadership Questionnaire (RSLQ) (Houghton & Neck, 2002); and Psychological Capital Questionnaire (Luthans et al., 2007). The results indicated that for the total sample, significant positive correlations were obtained between Self-leadership, Psychological Empowerment and Psychological Capital. For males, significant positive correlations were obtained between Self Leadership and Psychological Empowerment and also between Self- leadership and Psychological Capital. For females, significant positive correlations were obtained between Self- leadership and Psychological Empowerment. Gender differences emerged on Self-punishment and Self -talk constructs of Self-leadership and on all constructs of Psychological Empowerment, with males scoring higher than female entrepreneurs. These findings can direct the policy makers to determine the focal areas in which training the entrepreneurs can enable self-direction and self-reliance.Keywords
